I snapped my head up to glare at Archie. “You must be joking,” I said before turning my attention back to my half-packed suitcase.
“I’m not joking.” Archie said, his voice stern. “So save yourself the stress and put your clothes back in the closet.”
I huffed out a breath and sat on my bed, eyeing him. “I’ve been here for weeks, Archie. Weeks.” I stressed each word, hoping he would finally understand how ridiculous this was becoming.
From his spot on the armchair, Archie shrugged. “And what about it?”
I had woken up today with a feral need to go back to my apartment, but Archie refused, insisting I had to stay.
But I couldn’t bear to stay another second. Not after Francesca appeared at the door yesterday with two huge suitcases because she wanted to “spend the weekend with her man.”
“Isn’t that too long?” I challenged. “I’ve overstayed my welcome.”
“It’s my apartment. I’m the one who gets to decide whether or not you’ve overstayed your welcome.”
“You’re being unreasonable.”
“You’re being stubborn.” Archie rose to his feet. “Take your clothes out of that suitcase, Arabella,”
I stood and folded my arms. “The incident was weeks ago, and I’m better now, so why can’t I go back to my apartment?”
Archie narrowed his eyes. “Don’t you like staying with me?”
I dropped my gaze to the floor. “It’s not that, Archie. We’ve been over this a couple of times.”
“Then what is it?” he asked, his tone agitated. “You used to want to come here before.”
“That hasn’t changed!” I rasped. “I’m just more comfortable in my apartment.”
“What makes you uncomfortable here?”
I looked up to see the questioning look on his face. “You’re making this more complicated than it needs to be, Archie.”
He shook his head and walked to the door. “You’re not leaving. That’s it.”
“I’m going to have to move out eventually!” I snapped. “I have an apartment I pay for, Archie. Why can’t I use it?”
He turned to look at me. “You can move out when you want to…”
“I want to move out now.”
He ignored me. “But not now.” His eyes softened. “I worry about you, Arabella… You…” He rubbed his face, frustration evident in the gesture. “I feel like you’re hiding something from me.”
My chest panged, a feeling I could only describe as a knife piercing my heart, making me groan inwardly. Eager to ease the tension, I put my hand on my hip. “If this is about the boyfriend situation, I lied. I don’t have a boyfriend.”
Archie gave me a pointed look. “That’s still debatable. But no… this isn’t about that.”

“Then what is it?” I asked, even though I already knew what he was referring to.
