When I’d asked myself, what the chances of running into Alvise today were… I had no idea I’d actually run into him.

As I held his gaze, it felt like I’d forgotten how to breathe. He watched me for a second longer before looking away and turning to the woman beside him.

Wait. The woman beside him.

My eyes widened as I took in the familiar face and blonde hair. She was the same woman who had threatened me in his office and ordered me to get out.

The same woman I’d gone home to search for and discovered was his fiancée’s sister. What was she doing with him again. Wedding plans?

Bile suddenly rose to my throat, so I turned around, forcing the unpleasant emotions away.

Henry raised a brow. “Your boss is here too,” he said, a note of disappointment in his voice. “What a coincidence.”

“He owns the restaurant,” I said absentmindedly.

Henry looked like he’d just seen a ghost. “Okay, now I want to leave.”

A small laugh escaped my lips. For some reason, I found the look on his face amusing. “Why?”

“I’m sure you were there to witness it. But, for the sake of your question, I’ll answer” He rubbed his chin and looked behind me. “I don’t like him.”

I rubbed my now-sweaty palm over my legs. “I’m sure the feeling’s mutual.”

“Definitely.”

I exhaled in relief as the waiters finally brought our food. I needed something to get my mind off the awkward situation. And what better distraction could there ever be for me than Chinese food?

“This looks good, though I’m not particularly interested in endorsing anything owned by that man,” Henry said, looking down at our plates.

I grabbed my chopsticks and picked up a dumpling, savoring the taste before bothering to reply. “I don’t share the same sentiment when it comes to good food.”

My tone was a little off. I could tell he noticed it too because he raised a brow. I was annoyed; I couldn’t deny it.

Though it was completely destabilizing to have the same man I was trying to forget in the same space as me while I was in the act of trying to forget him, that wasn’t what annoyed me the most.

It was the fact that Henry kept referencing him. Maybe I was being extra, but I didn’t want my “date” talking about my “boss.”

As if I’d summoned the devil, Alvise passed by our table with his date trailing behind him.

I watched as they walked to a table at the far end and sat down. He sat facing me, and I had to snatch my eyes away immediately to keep myself calm.

“So, tell me about yourself,” Henry said after some time.
