ARABELLA’S POV

I waited patiently, holding my breath as I searched his eyes, desperate to see if he would give anything away.

He didn’t.

Alvise remained eerily calm, his face stone-cold and his jaw set in a hard line. “Are you done?”

1 pulled my hand away, releasing him. “Too guilty to answer the question?” I asked, my voice almost shaking.

I needed to get it together. Why was I so scared?

50-vourner

“I understand your boy toy is dead and you’re looking for someone to blame,” Alvise said, smoothing out his suit. “But I’d warn you to watch that mouth.”

I breathed out, relieved. Was he denying it? I didn’t know what I would have done if he’d looked guilty. I would have realised my whole life was a lie, and I’d fallen for a man I knew nothing about.

I was only now realising that deep down, I’d hoped he wouldn’t be responsible for Henry’s death.

“Did you know about his death?” I asked.

“Do you think I keep up with your life?” His reply was clipped and harsh, his tone dismissive.

But I didn’t buy it. He definitely knew about Henry’s death. I mean, it was all over the news.

“I know you know about it,” I said. “Are you happy now?”

He looked annoyed, like my mere presence close to him was giving him a rash.

Ignoring my question, he sidestepped me and started walking away. I turned to watch him. “Alvise?”

He paused and slowly turned around, his eyes narrowing.

I flashed him a smile, this time genuine because I was suddenly in a good mood. “I won.”

Realisation settled in his eyes before they were quickly replaced by that same unreadable expression. He knew exactly what I was talking about.

I’d just beaten him at a game he started. He was the first one to move out of the way.

A muscle twitching in his jaw, he turned on his heel and walked away. Just before he took a turn, I spotted his hands, balled tightly into fists.

My smile widened.

Victory was indeed very sweet.

“I can’t even focus on work! I’m that pissed.”

I looked up from my computer to see Sierra’s head buried in her palms as she screamed into them.

“What’s got your panties in a twist?” I asked, leaning back in my chair.

“What do you mean? Weren’t you there yesterday to see all that happened?”

brows drew together. “You’re still thinking about that?”

“Are you not?”

On

“I am… I was.” I sighed, tapping my finger against the desk. “But I don’t want you stressing about that… about me.”

Sierra rolled her eyes. “Here you go again.”

I frowned. “What?”

“You think I can choose not to think about something that bothers you? We’re BEST friends.” She shook her head. “Seems you like to forget.”

I pouted. “I don’t deserve you.”

“You really don’t. But you will if you take me shopping today.”

An amused breath escaped me. “You know what? Yes, I will.”

“Ready when you are,” Sierra said, smiling from ear to ear before getting back to work.

The day sped by, and in no time, it was time to go home. Walking out of the building, Sierra hummed to herself. “Nothing gets me excited quite like shopping.”

“I can say the same,” I said as we got into our waiting ride.

The ride was fast, and a few minutes later, we reached the clothing store. Walking into the store hand in hand, I glanced at Sierra. “So tell me, how’s your relationship with your boyfriend going?”

“I don’t really know right now. It started off great, and I really like him. But we’ve been fighting a lot recently.”

I rubbed my thumb over her knuckles, my mood souring at the look on her face, I shouldn’t have brought it up. She looked genuinely sad.

“I’m going to get you whatever you want here, then we can talk about this later, okay?” I asked, pausing in the middle of the

store.

“Really?” she squeaked, her eyes lighting up.

I nodded. “I might end up bankrupt, but I’ll do anything to see the smile on your face.”

Sierra hugged me before jogging toward the shoe section some feet away from us.

“If it isn’t the crackling bomb.”

I turned around to see Tatiana standing with security guards I recognised as Alvise’s.

They held her shopping bags and stood behind her protectively, like, they feared someone would get too close to her.

Interesting.

Recalling her words just now, I furrowed my brows. “Crackling bomb? I love the name. Why, thank you.”
