A few minutes later, the car slowed in front of Archie’s apartment, and I made a move to get out, but then I remembered something else.
ned to him. “And… thank you for…” I cleared my throat. “I don’t know what you did… but I didn’t get fired. I… don’t deserve it. I don’t know why you helped me… but I really appreciate it.”
Finally, he turned to look at me. His eyes, as blue as ever, pierced mine. Alvise nodded towards the door. “You can leave.”
My face fell, and my stomach sank. He was dismissing me. Again.
Fed up, I opened the door and stepped out.
Before I closed the door, I thought I heard him mumble to himself, “Even I don’t fucking know why I did it…”

The sound of cars driving past at an alarming speed as I got out of the cab made me clutch my purse tightly to my chest.
“Why do you insist on dropping me off here? The road is very busy,” I said to the cab driver.
The old man ignored my complaint and pointed at the door. “Close my door.”
1 grimaced at his rudeness before slamming the door shut. “I don’t know what is wrong with people these days,” I mumbled to myself as I walked along the sidewalk, flinching every once in a while as the drivers speeding past blared their horns like it was some sort of competition.
“The fool doesn’t have a car.”
I paused and turned around, only to see the blond devil I’d slapped, Viktoriya, glaring at me. I looked to the side and saw Tatiana getting out of a parked car.
I’d been so distracted by the busy road that I hadn’t noticed them pulling up at a shop close to me.
“What do you want?” I asked, folding my arms.
“Watch that tone,” Tatiana said, a wicked grin spreading across her face. “You don’t want me to watch it for you.”
I rolled my eyes. “Empty threats,” I said. “That’s all you have.”
“Empty threats?” she scoffed. “My threats weren’t so empty when I almost got you fired, were they?”
I nodded. “Almost. That’s the keyword, and the last time I checked, I’m still very much employed.”
“And that’s because of my fiancé!” she retorted, her eyes narrowing. “Don’t forget that.”
My brows drew together. How did she know Alvise had helped me?
I shook my head, shoving the thought away, and glanced at my wristwatch. I was headed to Alvise’s office, and I was almost late. We had a meeting today, and I’d already promised not to miss anymore.
I turned around and started walking away, leaving the Russian sisters standing there.
A hand caught my wrist and spun me around. “We’re not done talking to you,” Viktoriya said.
I snatched my hand from her hold and sighed. Looking behind her, I spotted Tatiana walking carefully, her eyes trained on the ground as she tried her best not to get her heels stuck in the granite.
I brought my eyes back to her sister. “I guess you’re the one who does all the dirty work for your sister while she stands there being pretty.” I stroked my chin thoughtfully. “So, you’re like the handyman?”
Tatiana Stopped beside her sister. “And what about it?” she spat, eyeing me warily. “Are you jealous? That’s why you spilled all those lies last time, right? So you can turn us against each other?”
I looked between the two sisters. “Is that what she told you?” A laugh escaped me. “I see. So that’s the story you’re going with?” I shrugged. “Well, that’s none of my business, really.”
Viktoriya took a step closer, panic flashing in her eyes. “I never saw my sister’s fiancé before she arrived,” she said, her voice hard and firm. “So, stop with the fabricated stories.”
I gasped, genuinely surprised. She was lying right to her sister’s face, and Tatiana was just standing there, taking it. I didn’t
