“I don’t have an appointment,” I said to Alvise’s secretary, my chest heaving up and down from the long walk I had to take down here.

My mind still struggled to stray from Tatiana’s threats. I couldn’t call those words empty threats. The way she had said them, with so much conviction and confidence, like she was certain she could kill me as easily as she’d said it, made my mind spiral.

What gave her such confidence? Was there something I was missing?

“Then you cannot go in,” she said, waving the pen in her hand at me.

“We have a meeting,” I said, glancing at my phone screen. “And I have to be present.”

“The meeting doesn’t start for another five minutes, and it takes place in the conference room, not his office.”

I sighed, so tired that I didn’t bother arguing with her. I usually went into his office to go through notes from the last meeting before preparing the notes for the next one, so that’s what I had expected.

“Okay,” I said to the secretary before heading to the conference room on the same floor.

I walked into the conference room and made my way to an empty seat. There were already a few people present, so I nodded my head in greeting before pulling out my notes and pen from my purse.

“Hi.”

I glanced up to see the guy sitting opposite me smiling at me.

I almost didn’t return the smile. I wasn’t trying to be rude, but I had enough bad experiences with guys in the workplace to know I didn’t need to make any friends or try to be friendly all the time.

I mean, the last two times I tried doing that, I ended up kidnapped. “Hi,” I responded, turning my attention back to my

notes.

“You’re really pretty,” he said, prompting me to glance back at him.

I didn’t stare at him long enough to note anything particular about him, but I simply forced a smile. “Thank you.”

“You’re here for the meeting, yeah?”

What else would I be there for? I raised my brows but didn’t voice my annoyance. “Yes, I am. And you?” I asked, stating the obvious.

He nodded, and before I could register what was happening, he stood up and moved to sit beside me.

I blinked and turned to look at him. “Why did you change your seat?”

He put his arm over the back of my chair and smiled. “Who doesn’t want to be close to a pretty girl?”

I froze, irritation, fear, and indescribable annoyance flaring up within me. What was he even saying? I groaned inwardly and tipped my head back, holding back a scream.

Why was I so unfortunate that I barely met normal people at workplaces? Glancing at him again, I noted that I’d seen him at a couple of meetings, so he wasn’t entirely a stranger. Still, I was wary of him.

The door to the conference room opened, and all the muffled chatter died down, complete silence engulfing the room.

wareness settled over my skin, so I didn’t need to turn around to know who had walked in. I fixed my attention on my nors, trying to go through the details of the last meeting quickly because I’d been interrupted by the guy beside me.

“What are you doing?” Alvise’s cold, authoritative voice filled the room, distracting me.

I had no idea who the question was directed at until the guy beside me said, “Nothing, sir. I’m just waiting for the meeting.”

Curious, I finally let my eyes travel to him. Alvise stood in a dark sujt, looking as sharp and intimidating as he always did. M eyes traveled up to the hard look on his face, and I stilled.

He was glaring at me. What did I do?

“Get up.”
