ARABELLA’S POV

“Me?” I bit my lip, confused. “Why would you do that because of me?”

“I don’t owe you an explanation.”

I rolled my eyes, pinning him with a glare. “How can you say you adjourned the meeting because of me and then turn around and say you don’t owe me an explanation?”

“Leave my office, Arabella,” Alvise said, dismissing me.

The realization settled in, and I gasped. “Is this about the guy next to me?”

“What if it is?” he said nonchalantly.

I shook my head in disbelief. “Then you have double standards, Alvise.”

Disinterested and bored, he turned on his computer and flicked me a glance. “Enlighten me.”

“You have a fiancée,” I said through gritted teeth. “I think that says enough.”

“It says nothing.”

I huffed. “You don’t have a say in what I do with my life.”

“I do when it happens in my company.” He pinned me with a hard look. “You won’t frolic with anyone of my staff.”

I rubbed my temple, tired of the back and forth. “Fine,” I blurted, walking to the door.

“Arabella.” Alvise’s voice stopped me in my tracks.

I turned around. “Yes, sir?”

He scraped his tongue over his teeth. “I’m not done talking to you.”

His deep voice sent unwelcome shivers down my spine, making me groan inwardly. I needed to stay away from him..

I walked back to his desk and took a seat opposite him. “Anything else, sir?”

Alvise ignored me, typing on his computer for a couple of minutes before he finally flicked his cold gaze toward me. “You’ll no longer be coming here for meetings or representing your company for the merger.”

The air dried from my lungs, my legs shaking beneath the table. “What… why?”

He didn’t respond to me.

No… this wasn’t going to happen.

I stood up, my legs almost giving way as I stared at him. “Why would you do this? What did I do?”

Alvise kept his attention on his computer. “You can leave my office now.”

“You can’t just send me out after basically firing me,” I complained, my voice barely audible.

“I did not fire you.” he retorted.

“But you’re removing me from a project that’s barely begun. Why? Is this about what just happened in the conference room?”

pade this decision even before you got here,” he snapped. “So stop with the assumptions.”

I felt helpless. He was basically demoting me without doing it directly. I loved to finish what I started, especially at work Now, if I got kicked out of this project, Leah would laugh in my face and tell me I was so bad at the project that I couldn’t even make it through.

“It makes no sense,” I said, holding his gaze. “You take me out, then put me back in just to take me out again I know you couldn’t care less about me, but don’t you think you’re being too cruel?”

Alvise relaxed into his chair and tapped the desk with his finger. “I wouldn’t know. I don’t think about you.”

My heart clenched, a sharp feeling of hurt soaring through it as I fidgeted with my fingers. “Okay, sir,” I said, and then I turned around to leave, my mind made up that I was going to keep my distance.
