gret settled heavily in my stomach. My gut feeling had been right. I should never have come here. How could I have been so polish to walk straight into Tatiana’s trap?

“Arabella?”

I veered my head to the side and saw Cassie walking toward me. I blinked, making sure I wasn’t imagining things..

Sniffing, I wiped my face with the back of my hand. “Cassie? What are you doing here?”

“I was hungry, so I wanted to pick up something to eat at the restaurant.” Her eyes searched my face. “Why are you crying?”

I wiped away the leftover tears. “I… it’s a long story… don’t worry about it.”

“Are you sure?” she asked, rubbing my shoulders. “Did something happen in there?” She nodded toward the restaurant.

I frowned.

How did she know I’d walked out of that restaurant?

I was standing quite a distance away from it, and there was another restaurant close by.

“No,” I said, forcing a smile. “Nothing happened there.”

Cassie raised her brows. “Are you sure?”

She seemed too invested in the topic. Why was she so adamant about getting me to admit that something had gone wrong inside the restaurant?

“Yes, I am,” I assured her.

She shrugged. “Oh, okay. Please stop crying, then.” She hummed, running her hands through my hair.

I flinched and took a step back.

Something about the way she did it reminded me of Francesca. It was a weird comparison, but Francesca had always had this strange obsession with my hair.

I couldn’t stand it.

Then something clicked. I frowned. “This is the second time I’m running into you outside a restaurant.”

Cassie shook her head, a soft chuckle escaping her. “Oh, me? No, I think you’re mistaken.”

She avoided eye contact, fidgeting with the purse in her hands.

I pursed my lips. “No. I’m not. Remember the Chinese restaurant? I saw you outside it one time, and we even said hi to each

other.”

Cassie hesitated, scratching the back of her head before suddenly gasping, “Oh! Yes, I think I remember!”

She definitely did, but why didn’t she want to admit it?

I looked around. “This restaurant is very far from your house and workplace. Why did you come all the way here to get food?”

It had been a two-hour drive for me to get here. For Cassie, it would have been three to four hours. So, it didn’t make any

sense.

Why would she drive this far just to come eat here?

never even heard of this restaurant before, and the only reason I came was because this was the address Tatiana sent me.

“I came here with a friend,” Cassie announced. “She told me they had really nice food, so I should check it out.”

She was lying. I suddenly wanted to know why. “Oh, really? That’s great. Where is your friend?”

There was a long pause. One that stretched on for almost a full minute.

Cassie cleared her throat. “That’s the problem. I just lost her, and I’m looking for her.”

I nodded thoughtfully. “Have you tried calling her?”

“She didn’t bring her phone,” Cassie said, shaking her head. “She’s so stupid.”

I stared at her. She avoided my gaze, looking at anything but me. Something didn’t add up, and I desperately needed to know what it was.

“Okay,” I said, flashing her a bright smile. “I hope you find your friend, okay? I’ll be going now. I’m really tired.”

“That’s fine!” she said, walking away before I could pull her in for a hug. I stood there, watching Cassie rush into the restaurant like I was chasing her.

I shook my head and was about to turn around when something caught my eye.

Through the restaurant’s glass screen, I spotted Cassie sitting on the chair I’d sat on.

Right opposite Tatiana.
