ARABELLA’S POV
I couldn’t breathe… Why couldn’t I breathe?
“Arabella!” I heard Alvise call, his voice closer this time, but I couldn’t bring myself to turn and look at him.
I couldn’t do anything but stare at the TV screen, my entire body numb and weak.
My life was over. What was left?

How would I ever recover from this? My face and my name were on the news, and it was in connection to a murder case
How?
“You’re not breathing,” Alvise said, his voice so loud it seemed to vibrate against my skin, making me jerk my head towards him.
“Was this why you didn’t want me to change the channel?” I asked, my voice barely audible. “You knew?”
His eyes were unreadable, giving nothing away. But he didn’t confirm or deny it, which meant I was right. He knew, and he’d come here after seeing it.
That meant it was everywhere.
“What the fuck is going on?” My brother asked, walking back into the room. His eyes, soft and confused, met mine, and his face fell. “What the fuck is wrong with her, Alvise? Why is she shaking so much?”
Archie walked towards me, but before he could ask what was going on, his eyes travelled to the TV. “What the fuck…” He snapped his eyes back to me. “Isn’t that the man who dropped you off here? What’s going on?”
He shared a look with Alvise, and whatever passed between them made Archie immediately shut his mouth.
I glanced at my hands and rubbed them together, trying desperately to ease the shaking. With weak, unsteady legs, I stood up and started walking away.
Alvise grabbed my wrist, his hand warm and firm around my skin. “Where are you going?”
I looked up at him. “My room.”
“You… can’t be by yourself right now,” Archie said, his voice calm, but I could hear the panic underneath it.
I scoffed, “you both don’t have to pretend this isn’t as bad as it looks. There’s no need to sugarcoat it. I know my life is basically over, and that’s fine.”
“Your life is not over,” Alvise snapped coldly. “It’s going to go away.”
I shrugged his touch off and walked past him. My brother stopped me this time, rushing to stand in front of me. “Do you want to go get ice cream? I’ve been craving it.”
“There are tubs of ice cream in the fridge, Archie,” I said, rubbing my temples. I looked between him and Alvise and sighed.
Alvise looked as cold as always, with a disinterested expression on his face. He wasn’t a man of many words, so even I could tell it took a lot for him to do this. He’d left work to come here, and though he said nothing, his presence meant something.
“You two are acting weird, and it’s creeping me out,” laughed lightly. “I want to go to bed, that’s all.”

Rumed By My Brother’s Best Friend
I finally walked out and headed to my bedroom, making sure to lock the door behind me.

Sinding alone in the middle of the room, I crouched down on the floor and screamed, loud and heartfelt, until the scream dissolved into a raspy whisper.
I didn’t shed a single tear. I didn’t drown in my thoughts. My mind remained blank and strangely free, but my body?
It wouldn’t stop shaking.
A loud sound… There was a loud sound vibrating through the room.
I snapped my eyes open and looked around the room. I was on the floor, my head resting uncomfortably against my hands.
“Arabella, open the fucking door,” Archie said, banging loudly against it.
Oh. I sighed. So that’s where the sound was coming from.
“No,” I countered, standing up and trying to get my legs to cooperate.
“Please…” His voice was strained. “Just open the door.”
I sat on my bed, my eyes fixed on the door. I didn’t want him to see me and then worry.
I was fine, I think. I mean, I wasn’t crying, just having bad anxiety. That’s a good thing, right?
“I’ll open it later, Archie,” I yelled, folding myself onto the bed and rubbing my shaking hands together.
“I’ll give you two options.”
I froze, my throat suddenly dry. That was Alvise’s voice. He was still here?
Why?
