ARABELLA’S POV
“What?” I exclaimed, dumbfounded as I handed his phone back to him.

I just couldn’t believe it. Why would Cassie help Francesca escape from prison? What was the relationship between the two of them?
They weren’t supposed to know each other or be close. I’d never even seen them speak before.
Something was wrong. Terribly wrong.
“Were they usually together?” Alvise asked, pulling me from my thoughts.
I shook my head but didn’t look at him. “No, they weren’t.”
A few seconds of silence passed and unable to control the urge to ask, I whispered, “You sent Francesca to prison?”
After leaving Archie’s apartment that day, I never cared to find out what happened to Francesca. I never thought about her because I’d been too broken worrying about Archie and sulking over Alvise leaving.
So, it was shocking to know that she had been sent to prison, and even worse, that she had now broken
free.
“What did you think I did to her?” Alvise asked coldly, walking to the kitchen and opening the fridge.
I fidgeted with my fingers. “I don’t know… I never really thought about it.”
He grabbed a bottle of water and drank from it before leaning against the fridge. “Interesting. I wondered why you never asked.”
I looked away, his piercing eyes boring into me again. “Why didn’t you kill her?”
That came out wrong.
I couldn’t believe the words had left my lips, but I also couldn’t bring myself to take them back. I wasn’t asking because I wanted her dead. I was just shocked that he seemed to pick and choose when to be a criminal and when not to be.
If he’d so easily killed so many men in that warehouse, why had he sent Francesca to prison instead of doing the same to her?
“Do you want me to kill her?” Alvise asked, his voice dropping low and taking on a dark edge.
Slowly, I let my eyes trail back to him, my breath catching in my throat as his question hung heavily in the
air.
Did I want Francesca dead?
I couldn’t care less what happened to her, but I had to keep my brother in mind. Since they were already married, killing her would automatically make him a widower.

She knew exactly what she was doing when she made him marry her under such short notice. It was almost like she was hyper-aware of how emotional I could be.
“I don’t know,” I muttered, tapping my nails against the couch.
Alvise raised a brow, pushed off the fridge, then walked back into the living room.
My mind begged me to tell him I was conflicted, but I struggled not to.
Admitting it would mean being vulnerable, and the last thing I wanted was to be vulnerable in front of Alvise ever again.
Alvise looked up, catching me staring at him. “What is it?”
I bit my lip and shook my head. “Nothing.”
“If you want something, just ask,” he said calmly, waiting for a response from me.
I was scared by the news he’d shared. I feared that Francesca would want to harm me, and now that Cassie was in the mix, it could be bad.
Really bad.
Even though it went against everything I believed I stood for, I wanted her dead so I could live peacefully, knowing that she could never hurt me again.
But as I watched Alvise, my chest tight and heavy, I suddenly realised I still felt resentment toward him, especially after everything that had transpired.
Recalling how he’d helped Tatiana, kept his identity a secret and then left for Russia, I felt the biting urge to piss him off as much as he’d pissed me off.
“I don’t want anything from a criminal,” I mumbled, my fingers flexing nervously.
Alvise stilled, visibly tensing as his eyes narrowed. “What did you just say?”
“I… want nothing from a criminal like… you.” I barely got the words out before my palms turned sweaty and beads of perspiration formed across my forehead.
Alvise straightened and raised a brow. “Are you okay?”
It wasn’t a concerned question; it was more of a warning. One I didn’t heed. “Perfectly fine.”
Alvise scoffed. “I doubt you are.” His voice was every bit as biting, laced with anger. “Do you think I’m your lapdog?”
My face fell.
I had a bad feeling I might have taken things too far. But now, it was too late. I shook my head and cleared my throat. “You’re not my lapdog.”
Alvise hummed and took a step forward. I was thankful there was a couch between us, but in the blink of an eye, he reached forward, grabbed my hand and pulled me over the couch, dropping me onto it.

“You looked me in the eye and told me you want nothing from a criminal,” he snorted in disbelief. “First of all, never open your mouth to call me that ever again.”
The look in his eyes scared me, and I pressed my back against the couch, uncomfortable with our sudden proximity.
Alvise’s eyes followed the movement, and he brought his hand to his lips, rubbing his thumb over them. slowly.
“I broke protocols for you,” he gritted. “Did things I never should have, and you have the guts to act like you’re doing me a favour?”
I couldn’t bring myself to keep quiet even though I was shaking like a leaf. “All you’ve done is lie to me and…”
“Lie to you?” He slipped his hand into his pocket. “I’ve never owed you shit, and I still don’t.”
He leaned forward and wrapped a hand around my throat, making me yelp.
His fingers settled against my skin gently yet firmly, his hold not suffocating but still uncomfortable enough to make my pulse race.
I swallowed, my hands shaking in my lap, while his eyes stayed fixed on my throat. “The biggest mistake I made was making you get comfortable around me.”
His fingers moved slowly around my neck, sending both warmth and jolts of fear through my body.
Alyise brought his face closer until I could see every single outline of his face, his lips just inches away from mine.
A dark look crossed his features, and in the lowest, most dangerous voice, he said, “If you dare call me a criminal again or speak to anyone about my identity as Pakhan,” His lips brushed mine, I’ll fucking kill you,”
