ARABELLA’S POV

I flinched, taking a terrified step back and crashing into something… someone.

Alvise’s scent wafted into my nose, and it calmed my racing heart a bit. He was behind me, but I suddenly didn’t know if that meant I was safe.

I didn’t know anything anymore.

Alvise’s father pressed the gun further into my temple, his brows raised. “Do not involve yourself in this…”

“I brought her here.” Alvise said calmly, too calmly for a situation like this. And then, with a level of authority I wouldn’t dare show to my own father, he ordered, “Lower the fucking gun.”

His father seemed to get even more pissed, and then he removed the safety from the gun, his finger drifting closer to the trigger. “I will do whatever I want.” His eyes landed on me. “And right now, I want to kill her…”

Alvise pushed me to the side and grabbed the gun softly, but his father, not willing to give up without a fight, pulled the trigger, and then a loud bang shot through the air, the bullet hitting a chandelier and bringing it crashing down.

A terrified scream tore through me, and I covered my ears, the loud crash making them ring so badly, I

could still hear the echo.

I looked around, shocked to see that every other person stood calmly, like this was just another casual day in the family.

“You dare challenge me in front of a nobody?” Alvise’s father sneered, his nostrils flaring.

Alvise folded his arms behind him, the gun still in his palm, and raised a brow. “You’re getting old, Alexei. Perhaps that’s making you forget how things work around here.”

Alvise stepped into his face, eye to eye with him. “You only stay here because I let you. Don’t you dare think you have a say in who I choose to bring here, because you don’t.”

I fidgeted with my fingers, unsure why Alvise spoke to his father that way or why his father seemed to tolerate it. And Alexei… was that his father’s name?

“I’m your father!” Alexei seethed.

“And I am Pakhan. I’m sure you know what that means.”

“You didn’t want to be Pakhan…”

“But you had a field day ensuring it happened anyway.” Alvise cut him off. “Why are you salty now?”

Alexei’s angry eyes landed on me once again. “Who the fuck is she?”

Alvise slipped a hand in his pocket and moved away from his father. “I owe you no explanation, Alexei.”

“Then I’ll kill her in fifteen days.” Alexei declared, sending a tremor down my spine.

said it like a promise, one he would fulfil no matter what.

What did I do to him, and why would he want to kill me?

My chest felt heavy, and a knot, prickling and poisonous, formed in my stomach. My life was yet again being gambled upon right in front of me.

“If you’re trying to challenge me, I’d advise that you don’t.” Alvise warned, and with a determination so strong it made my stomach flutter, he said, “I’ll kill you before you lay a hand on her.”

I stared at him in disbelief just as gasps erupted in the room, and his mother stepped forward.

“Son… you don’t need to threaten your father.” She said, seemingly scared of the threat Alvise had made.

I could see it in her eyes, the way she tried to tell Alexei to calm down. She believed him… that he was capable of killing his father, and from the look of things, his father did too.

What the hell was going on?

“Okay then, you’ve made your bet, and I have mine.” Alexei said, taking a step back. “I want her out of the house as soon as possible.” He shot me a sharp look. “Or there will be consequences…”

“You’re pushing it.” His wife said, worry seeping into her voice.

“Stay out of this, woman. I’m having a conversation with my son.” Alexei commanded. “Stay

“He’s my son too!” She argued.

“Then fucking talk some sense into him.” He said, casting me another spiteful look before walking away and up the stairs, his thunderous footsteps sounding again.

It was loud because he basically stomped on the floor angrily as he walked.

Panic swirled in me.

What was bugging him so much?

Alvise’s mother walked to him, her eyes pleading. “I don’t want any problems between you and your father,” she said cautiously, like she was scared to upset him. “Whoever she is…” Her eyes found mine. “She needs to go.”

I’d never felt more unwanted in my life.

I wanted to disappear because that seemed more tolerable than being treated with such disdain.

“I’ll let you know when I start to give a shit about what that man thinks, mother.” Alvise said coldly. “But it seems you’ll have to wait forever.”

Her face fell. “What about me?”

Alvise scoffed. “You only do whatever he wants.” He shook his head. “My answer is the same.”

I couldn’t hold back the surprised gasp that escaped my lips, and I regretted it immediately because their eyes snapped to me, hers furious and his unreadable.

I lowered my gaze immediately.

“Rozaliya!” She yelled, and Alvise’s sister ran to her. “Have the maids prepare a room for the Pakhan’s

guest…

Alvise glanced at his wristwatch and cut in, “She’ll stay in mine.”

“Impossible.” His mother refused. “You’re to be married in less than two weeks. How would the Ivanovs react to the news of you staying in the same room with a woman?”

“I don’t care to know, mother.” He said. “She. Stays. With. Me.” He repeated.

“This conversation is not over, son.” And then, defeated and visibly enraged, she walked away, her heels clicking loudly as she did.

“She can stay in my room, brother.” Rozaliya offered once her mother was out of earshot.

I rubbed my sweaty hands over Alvise’s coat that was still draped over my body, not sure which option would be best for me. I wouldn’t survive staying with Alvise, but that didn’t mean staying with his sister, a total stranger, would be any better.

“Don’t bother, Rozaliya.” Alvise announced, and then he walked past her and came to stand in front of me.

He opened his mouth to say something, but stopped and then turned to the people still left in the living room. “Everyone out.” He ordered. “Now.”
