ARABELLA’S POV

I held my breath as people walked away, their hushed murmurs flitting through the room before they left.

Rozaliya scratched the back of her head before she scurried upstairs after casting one last glance at us.

I released the breath I’d been holding, but sucked it back in when Alvise turned to look at me.

His eyes unnerved me more than everything that had happened, and in a messed-up way I felt safer knowing he was just as twisted as he was.

“Are you okay?”

I exhaled and shook my head. “No. I want to go home.”

He gave me a blank look. “We’ve been over this.”

“Have we?” I rasped, pressing my palms together. “Your family hates me.”

“They hate everybody.” He said it nonchalantly.

“I can’t live with people who despise me…” I breathed. “And you….” I choked, “you were so mean. You are always so mean. I can’t do this.”

His eyes narrowed, and he stared at me until it became so unbearable that I had to look away.

“You’re already here.” He said, breaking the silence. “Get used to it.”

A painful chuckle escaped my lips, and I huffed. It wasn’t the first time he’d been mean to me, but that never made it any more bearable.

His words and the way he said them were always too cold and biting to be ignored. He knew just how to make a person feel miserable with the way he dismissed them.

I felt that way now, and it made me want to pull my hair out and scratch my nails across his face.

If only wishes were horses.

“I don’t want to stay in the same room with you.” I said, looking around. “Where’s your sister? I think I want to take her up on her offer.”

He cocked his head to the side and rubbed his thumb over his lips. “The only room you’ll sleep in is mine?”

Frustrated, I snapped, “Aren’t you supposed to be an engaged man?” I said, tired of the mixed signals, or lack of signals thereof. “One minute you’re…” I lowered my voice, “kidding me, and the next minute I’m getting informed you’re getting married in a couple of days, oh, and the very NEXT minute, we have to share a room?” I put my hand on my hip. “Make it make sense”

Alvise turned around and headed for the stairs. “It only has to make sense to me. I don’t explain myself to anyone.”

I rolled my eyes. “Sure. You can make decisions about my life and still owe me no explanation. That’s very normal.” I said sarcastically.

“I shouldn’t get into the room before you, Arabella.” He warned while he was already halfway up the stairs

If there was one thing I was never going to do after today, it was underestimate how crazy the man was, so after shooting one last glance at the shattered chandelier, I rushed up the stairs to meet up with him.

I was huffing and panting, shocked by the seemingly never-ending steps and the long hallways that didn’t want to end, before we finally stopped in front of a large door.

Alvise unlocked it, and before he could step in, I pushed past him and got in.

Even through my anger and irritation, I couldn’t deny the fact that the room was almost perfect. It was huge, a little too spacious for a man who lived in it alone, but very luxurious yet minimal.

I glanced at Alvise. “Do you stay here alone?”

He unclasped his wristwatch and threw it on the nightstand. “No. I live with the staff.”

I blinked, fighting away the giggle that rose to my throat. “Did you just try to be sarcastic?”

“Try?” He scoffed. “I wasn’t trying.”

“Pride goes before a fall.” I snapped, looking away as he undid his tie.

“Thanks for the update.” He muttered, and from the corner of my eye, I saw him undo the buttons of his dress shirt. “I’ll be sure to take you down with me,” he said, and then he headed to the walk-in closet.

I stood awkwardly until he got out, a change of clothes in his hand, before he disappeared into the bathroom.

I sighed and sat on the bed, taking my time to search for any pictures of him. There were none, but even if no one told me, I would know that it was his.

It was as cold, calculated, and intense as he was, every single thing contributing to the darkness he naturally exuded when he wanted to.

I sat there, doing nothing for several minutes until he got out of the bathroom, dressed in a white dress shirt and black suit pants.

I was glad he didn’t dress up in front of me because I wouldn’t have known how to act. He probably knew that too.

“Are you going somewhere?” I asked, alarmed as he put on his suit jacket.

He raised his head to look at me. “Yes.”

I stood up, my chest tight. “I’ll go with you.”

The thought of being left alone with his family made a bitter taste settle in my mouth.

I feared they would harm me in some way before he got back.

“You can’t come with me, Arabella.”

Nrowned. “Why?”

Alvise poked his inner cheek with his tongue. “You won’t like where I’m off to.”

“And where are you off to?” I asked cautiously.

It looked like he was going to answer, until he shook his head. “I don’t owe you an explanation.”

As he pulled another wristwatch from a drawer and clasped it on, I grew increasingly nervous. “You know it’s not fair, right?” I said. “I don’t know anyone here.”

He paused on his way to the door and turned to look at me. “You don’t have to. You just have to stay inside.”

“Is that what you brought me here to do?” I scoffed. “Stay inside and wither all day while you can go anywhere you want? I don’t even have a phone.”

“I’ll get you one.”

“Oh, how generous of you?” I snorted. “I don’t care if I have to leave here dead, Alvise, but I will leave.” I said with determination.

He stalked towards me and grabbed my waist, shocking me, and with an unusual speed, he pushed me back until my back hit the wall. Then he pulled the neckline of the dress down and sucked on the skin between my collarbone and my neck.

He spoke against my skin, his words rough and sizzling. “Dead or alive, you’re not leaving.”
