ARABELLA’S POV

The room stilled, Alvise’s words almost freezing in the air and leaving everyone shocked.

Shit.

Why did he reveal our marriage?

My heart thundered in my chest, and I kept my gaze low, the fear of what their reactions would be making my fingers twitch.

“What?” Mrs. Valerio exclaimed, her voice riddled with shock. “You got married to her?”

She said it with disdain, like she couldn’t believe it was real.

I dug my nails into my palm as more gasps erupted around the table, leaving me more nervous than I had been before.

“Tell me this is a joke!” Alexei yelled, pushing his chair back with a loud scrape against the floor before standing up.

Alvise said nothing, and his silence almost made everything worse.

Glass shattered on the floor, and I jumped, my blood almost freezing in my veins.

“I’m asking a fucking question! How could you marry her without informing anybody about it?”

I finally looked up, a shocked gasp escaping my lips as I saw Alexei trying to walk towards Alvise but being held back by the guards.

“You cannot do this!” he seethed. “You cannot!”

“I already have,” Alvise replied, calmly looking at his father. “And I would advise you to sit your ass down and eat because that’s all you can do.”

His nostrils flared, and he shook his head. “Never! I will never eat at a table where a nobody dares disgrace the Valerio name! You must divorce her now!”

I flinched, his raging words so harsh and sharp that I started to wonder what exactly I’d ever done to him.

He hated me.

That much was certain.

But in this particular case, I didn’t care that he was asking Alvise to divorce me. That would also work in my favour, and I would finally be able to go back home.

Alvise stroked his chin lightly, like his father’s words did nothing to aggravate him. “I don’t care if you eat, Alexei. Just sit the fuck down and watch everyone else, then.”

Alvise’s calmness seemed to only tip his father further over the edge. “You’re making a big mistake, son.”

He gritted out. “A big mistake.”

Son?

My eyes snapped to Mrs. Valerio as she spoke, her eyes filled with confusion.

“Why did you do this?”

Alvise tapped a finger on the table. “Because I wanted to.”

I knew he didn’t mean anything by what he said, but my stomach fluttered, his words ringing in my head over and over again.

But his answer only seemed to make her shoulders tense. “You wanted to?” she asked in disbelief. “You’re engaged to Tatiana…”

“Was.” He corrected her. “I was engaged to Tatiana, and I called that off right here in front of everyone.”.

I bit my lip and took a deep breath as I waited for her to speak.

“But… why?” she asked. “Ivanov will go insane if he finds out about this. He will not let this go.”

Before Alvise could reply, his father chimed in. “Tell him! Maybe he doesn’t understand the gravity of what a war means…”

“I said, shut the fuck up!” Alvise ordered, rising to his feet, his voice so loud I heard someone flinch and drop their glass of water on the floor.

“You should know by now that I don’t give a fuck about a war, Alexei,” Alvise said, stalking towards his father. “You can go tell your secret alliance that they can start up whatever they want.”

He paused one foot away from him, looking down at him. “But don’t forget to warn them that I would kill every single traitor I find. Including you.”

Alexei’s face reddened, and his movements became jerky as he struggled against the hold of the guards. “I’m not part of a secret alliance. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

My brows shot up as I watched him.

He was definitely lying. I could see it in the way he didn’t dare look Alvise in the eye and the way his voice was no longer as loud as it had been just seconds ago.

I didn’t understand what they were talking about, but one thing was definitely clear…

Alexei had something to hide.

“You can deny it all you want,” Alvise scoffed. “In fact, deny it until you start believing it as the truth. I couldn’t care less. But keep in mind that when the time comes, not even your knees on the floor or your unfortunate blood relation to me would stop me.”

Alexei snapped his head up. “You’re… doing this because you’re scared.”

Alvise breathed out in amusement. “Scared?”

I rubbed my sweaty hands over my pants and leaned back to watch them carefully so I could try to piece their words together and get a hint of what they were talking about.

Alexei nodded, replying to Alvise. “Yes. If you weren’t scared…” His eyes snapped to me, and he glared, pointing his index finger at me. “You wouldn’t have rushed to marry her!”

Alvise glanced at his wristwatch and slipped his hands into his pockets. “Enlighten me, Alexei. I want to hear what you have to say.”

“You already know what I’m talking about, don’t you?” Alexei snorted.

“I’m afraid I don’t, so like I said, say it for yourself,” Alvise urged him calmly. “Your empty/threats do nothing but annoy the fuck out of me. So, for you to have the delusional thought that anything from your weak mouth would scare me makes me want to laugh.”

“Empty threats?” His father laughed bitterly. “When I said I was going to kill her in fifteen days, you knew I wasn’t joking. I was actually going to do it, and that’s why you hastily made her your wife to put her under your protection!”

A bitter taste settled in my mouth, and my face fell.

Why did that actually make sense?

I recalled Alvise telling me he was marrying me to protect me, so was it really true?

“You’re getting better at making up stupid stories,” Alvise muttered, an amused smirk appearing on his lips.

He tilted his head to the side and leveled his father with a glare. “But as always, you’re ten steps behind.”
