Alexei’s eyes bulged out of their sockets, and he tried to step closer to Alvise. “What does that mean? What are you saying?”

“I’m done with this conversation,” Alvise said, walking back to his chair.

I released a breath of relief the moment he sat next to me, his fresh, woody scent wafting into my nose and ridding me of the crazy thoughts I had been having for a moment.

I had questions to ask him.

Several questions.

But I couldn’t call him by his name, and I didn’t want to call him ‘Pakhan’ either. So, to get his attention, poked his shoe with mine under the table.

He flicked his gaze to me almost immediately and raised his brows, searching my face. “What’s the problem?”

Everyone’s attention suddenly darted to us, their eyes almost drilling holes into my head, and I looked down, unable to speak with the weight of their attention on me.

“Eat,” Alvise said a second later, and everyone picked up their cutlery, digging into their food.

I finally looked up and absentmindedly bit my lip when I found his eyes still on me.

He was still waiting for me to speak.

His eyes dropped to my lips, and a muscle in his jaw twitched. “Like I said, you know exactly what you’re doing, Arabella.”

Heat crept up my cheeks, and I shook my head. “I promise you… it’s not intentional.”

Alvise scraped his tongue over his teeth and nodded, but I could see that he didn’t believe me. “Hmm.”

“I’m just used to doing it,” I whispered. “I do it whenever I’m nervous…”

“Let me go, you stupid fools!” Alexei growled, snapping my attention towards him.

He was still standing with the guards holding him back, and while he looked tired, he didn’t seem ready to stop fighting.

Alvise cussed under his breath, then calmly ordered, “Sit. Down.”

“How can I sit when your guards are…”

Alvise pulled a gun out of his waistband and placed it calmly on the table, nodding towards it. “You can sit by yourself, or I’ll do it for you.”

Alexei rushed forward and sat on the chair instantly, not uttering a single word.

So, he was the one who was actually scared of his son, not the other way around.

wasn’t surprised, though. Alvise was a monster when he wanted to be, and he never made empty threats.

Never.

I tried to pick up my cutlery and eat, but the sight of the gun on the table made me uneasy, and I couldn’t do anything else but sit back and try to calm my uneven breaths.

I felt Alvise’s eyes on me, and then, suddenly, he picked up the gun and returned it to his waistband.

I sighed in relief and mumbled, “Thank you.”

Silence stretched on around us for some seconds before he leaned in and whispered, sending-shivers down my spine. “Eat your food, Arabella.” He intentionally made sure his lips brushed over my earlobe, making me freeze. “And we need to finish our conversation.”

Before I could ask what conversation he was talking about, he leaned away and began eating.

I did the same, though I was only forcing the toast into my mouth and barely tasted anything because my mind was stuck on his words.

From the corner of my eye, I could see him eating calmly, with no trace of the uneasiness he had caused

It wasn’t fair.

“So… you’re now my sister-in-law?”

I turned to my side to see Rozaliya staring blankly at her untouched plate, and I frowned, unsure of what

to say.

She’d sat so quietly all this while that I’d forgotten she was even sitting next to me.

She glanced at me, her eyes suddenly sparkling. “Oh my… why didn’t you tell me?” she said, something close to a smile grazing her lips.

“I…”

She cut me off. “I came to the room this morning to look for you, and you didn’t tell me you married my brother?”

I opened my mouth, but closed it right after.

“We’ll talk about this later,” she said with determination. And you have a lot of explaining to do.”

I couldn’t tell if she was excited or angry, but I definitely knew I wasn’t looking forward to the conversation.

Rozaliya seemed like the most tolerable member of her family, but I still didn’t want to fully believe she liked me.

I resumed eating, and after forcing more eggs, bacon, and toast down my throat, I finished off my glass of orange juice and leaned back in the chair, done with eating.

From Alexei glaring at me to Mrs. Valerio almost heating up my face with the number of times I caught her staring, I was immensely uncomfortable.

But I sat through it until breakfast was finally over and everyone left, leaving me with Alvise.

I turned to look at him as he typed out a message on his phone with a frown on his face.

“What are you always typing?” I asked curiously.

He took his time to finish typing before slipping his phone into his pocket and looking up, his blue eyes trapping me in their piercing gaze. “Something serious.”

“Enlighten me.”

“No.”

I shook my head. “That’s not nice.”

Alvise lifted a brow and leaned forward. “You said something about biting your lip whenever you’re nervous?”

My eyes widened, and I stared at him in disbelief. “We’re talking about that again?”

Ignoring my question, he asked, “So, since you do that around me a lot, are you saying that you’re always nervous around me?”

My mouth hung open, and my stomach fluttered with something dangerously close to anticipation.

Lscratched the back of my head and looked away. “Why do you sound so serious?”

“Because I am, Arabella.”

I glanced at him. “What are you driving at?”

A dark look crossed his face, and before I could react, he grabbed my wrist and dragged me up. In a split second, he had set me in his lap.

I gasped, placing my hands on his shoulders to steady myself. “I’m beginning to think you find excuses to touch me.”

His eyes narrowed. “Why would I need an excuse?”

My fingers flexed on his shoulder. “So… you like touching me?”

The corner of his lips lifted, and his hands traveled to my waist. “Isn’t that obvious?”
