Without thinking, I rounded the car and opened the passenger door, rushing inside before shutting it behind

My jaw hung open as I stared at William. “I can’t believe this is really you.” I rasped in disbelief. “How did you get here?”

He rubbed a hand over his jaw, sighing in relief. “It’s a long story, Arabella. I’m just glad you’re fine.”

Before I could allow myself to get excited about seeing him, I shook my head, the severity of the situation making my head ache.

“You need to leave, William,” I told him. “It’s not safe for you to…”

“I came to tell you the same thing!” William said, cutting me off. “That Alvise guy isn’t really who you think he is. He’s part of the Bratva and…”

The sound of tyres screeching in the distance made me jump in my seat. “William! I…”

I didn’t even get time to get another word out before William drove off at an alarming speed, making me clutch the seatbelt to steady myself.

“Slow down!” I yelled, my heart racing as I tried to keep it together and not panic.

“I’m sorry,” William muttered, his eyes fixed on the road. “I just need to lose the cars behind us.”

My eyes widened, and I swallowed hard.

The cars behind us?

I snapped my head back, shocked to see that there were indeed cars chasing us, their headlights almost blinding as they flashed toward us.

I turned around, rubbing my hands over my chest and taking a deep breath.

I might not have seen the cars clearly enough to identify them, but I didn’t even need to.

He sent his men after us.

I turned to William, still trying to get over the shock that he was really here. “Find a secluded corner where you can drop me off so you can leave.”

William hissed under his breath. “What the fuck are you talking about, Arabella?”

I turned back again, and my stomach dropped.

The cars were getting closer… It just wasn’t possible to lose them.

“I don’t want to get you in trouble,” I said, panicking. “Just stop the car and run away while you can..”

“I came here to save you,” William shot back. “I’m not leaving unless we’re leaving together.”

“We can’t outnumber them, William!” I stressed. “Just…”

“We might not be able to outnumber them, but I know someone who can, so just trust me, okay?”

He knew someone who could outnumber them?

I gasped. “The police aren’t going to do anything, if that’s what you mean…”

“I know they won’t,” William muttered, and then, without warning, took a sharp turn into a dark, narrow road, driving like a crazed man until we finally lost the cars and pulled to a stop.

I leaned back against the seat, struggling to catch my breath, my throat dry.

I waited for a few tense seconds to pass before I glanced at William. “What the hell is going on?” I asked. confused. “Who is the person you were talking about just now?”

William turned to look at me, the impatience in his eyes clear as day. “I need to get you out of here.”

“I know,” I mumbled. “I heard that… and you said something about Alvise being in the Bratva?”

William ran a hand through his hair. “Yes, Arabella, and that’s why we need to leave for London immediately.”

I opened my mouth. Closed it.

It was too much to process at once.

I wasn’t just dealing with the shock of seeing him… I was stunned that he knew so much about Alvise’s involvement in the Bratva.

“How do you know all this?” I inquired, searching his face. “Did Sierra tell you?”

“No.” William furrowed his brows. “Does she know?”

Shit.

I groaned inwardly, regret swirling within me. If she didn’t tell him, then I had just unintentionally revealed that she was aware.

“Arabella?” William pressed, placing his hand over mine in the center console. “Tell me.”

I laughed awkwardly, avoiding the question. “You’ve not given me an answer. Why do you think Alvise is involved with criminals?”

“I was worried sick because I hadn’t heard from you, and I managed to get in touch with Sierra days after she had also gone radio silent,” he explained, huffing out a tense breath. “When I asked where you were, she said you were in Russia and wouldn’t tell me anything else.”

I nodded, biting my lip anxiously. “How is she?” I asked, my chest heavy. “Sierra?”

“Not doing too good,” William said truthfully. “She doesn’t say it out loud, but it’s obvious she’s become a shadow of herself.”

All thoughts of her that I’d tried to keep buried and the guilt that had been eating me up slowly rose to the surface, the feeling almost overwhelming.

I shoved the thoughts away, fidgeting with my fingers. “So, if all she told you was that I was in Russia… how did you sum up Alvise’s part?”

William held my gaze. “I never liked him, especially not after he threw that phone at me in the club or when he forced you out of my car.” He gritted out, his eyes hard.

I recalled both events, but he still didn’t answer my question.

Alvise’s true identity wasn’t information that was out there to be discovered.

He covered his tracks well, and William couldn’t have just discovered it in passing.

“You’re still stalling giving me an answer to what I really want to know, William,” I urged. “There’s no time and…”

“I’m working with a guy who’s like his sworn enemy…”

My eyes bulged out of their sockets, a knot forming in my stomach. “Working with his enemy? Why would you involve yourself in the criminal world and…”

“Forget about all that, Arabella!” he interrupted. “The man is ready to help me take you out of Russia,” William said, starting the car again. “Let’s go meet him.”

“No!” I shook my head. “Turn off the car, William.”

I was shaking, the realization that Alvise would kill William if he found out any of this eating me alive.

Sure, I wanted to escape, but not like this. Taking help from Alvise’s enemy was something that didn’t sound right.

William ignored me and tried moving the car, but I lurched forward and grabbed the steering wheel. “He’s going to kill you if he catches up to us,” I said hastily. “My phone is bugged, and he’s probably tracing me right now, so run… Now, William!”

“I can’t leave you…”

The sound of tyres screeching against the ground filled the air, and then lights flashed toward us, almost blinding me.

I rushed out of the car and yelled at William, “Run! They’re looking for me, so drive off now! Just go!”

William hesitated, but I clasped my hands together, begging him, and then he moved the car, about to speed away, but four gunshots suddenly cut through the air.

My blood ran cold as I snapped my head toward his car, and when I looked down, my heart sank

All four of his tyres were flat.
