His Heir?

ARABELLA’S POV

The room went still, impossibly more than it already had been, and in the midst of all the silence, my mind was in turmoil.

Tatiana was pregnant… with Alvise’s baby?

It sounded like an impossible statement, and I wished with everything in me that it wasn’t true.

It just couldn’t be true.

My eyes flicked to Alvise, and as if he suddenly sensed my presence, his eyes found mine, making my pulse quicken.

I couldn’t read anything in his blue depths or on his face, and that made me bite the inside of my cheek, the suspense of it almost unbearable.

He raised a brow, his jaw hardening. “What are you doing here?”

The whole room turned to me, and I swallowed hard, dreading the fact that I had been put in the center of attention once again.

I refused to respond, simply staring at him until he spoke again. “I told you to go to bed, Arabella.”

“Why?” Alexei cut in, laughing like a madman and waving the document in his hand like it was a flag. “So you could hide the truth about you being the father of Tatiana’s unborn child from her?”

“Shut the fuck up.” Alvise snapped, leveling his father with a glare. “That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard all year.” He said, stroking his chin. “And if this is your ploy to take the attention off the fact that you had an affair with her, think again.”

“He’s not lying!”

I looked down to see Tatiana finally getting up from the floor, her cheeks stained with dried tears as she walked toward Alvise.

“I never slept with your father, baby…”

“Don’t call me that.” Alvise instructed calmly. “And don’t stand in my face and lie to me.”

Almost impatiently, Alexei shoved the document into Tatiana’s hands. “Come on! Show it to him since he won’t take it from my hands! The evidence is right there!”

“Pakhan…” Tatiana sniffed. “I’m three weeks pregnant… with our child.” She said, holding out what I guessed was her test result for him.

Alvise tilted his head to the side, his eyes hardening. “If you are pregnant,” he muttered, folding his hands behind his back. “That baby is definitely not mine, so step the fuck out of my face.”

She almost stumbled back a step, the harsh command in his voice probably startling her.

“Son?” Mrs. Valerio said, finally joining the tense conversation. “Let’s at least look at the test. You were engaged…”

“I don’t need to look at anything to know she’s not carrying my baby, mother.”

“But she’s three weeks pregnant!” Alexei stressed, shouting over everyone else. “Tatiana was in London with you three weeks ago, so how the hell can it be my baby?…” As if catching himself, he cleared his throat. “Not that I’ve ever been intimate with her to begin with.”

I rested against a nearby couch, my legs almost giving way as everything playing out sent a pang straighy through my heart.

Alvise didn’t lie… he didn’t.

If he said it wasn’t his baby, then it wasn’t… right?

Yes…. I should believe him. I know I should, so why were there doubts creeping into my mind?

Of course, this was what she had sneaked up on me for.

“Rightful wife?” I snickered. “When was the wedding held?”

Irina gasped exasperatedly. “Didn’t you hear what she said? She’s pregnant with the Pakhan’s child.” An evi smile played on her lips. “His heir…” Her eyes dropped to my finger. “That cancels out whatever you think you have with him.”

Anger boiled in my veins, and a bitter taste settled on my tongue, one that made me lash out. “If that’s what you want to tell yourself, then sure, but get out of my face because I’m not in the mood for your stupid mouth.”

And I really wasn’t.

I was bottling up a lot, and I could feel myself on the verge of losing all control.

With that in mind, I tried to sidestep her, but she kept stepping in front of me until I lost it and, without thinking, slapped her across the face.

Irina’s head veered to the side, and she clutched her cheek, a pained gasp escaping her lips.

“Maybe that sent my message across.” I gritted out, pushing past her and walking to the bedroom door.

I unlocked it and was about to step in when Irina’s voice stopped me.

“Very soon, you’ll be forced out of this house, and I can’t wait to push you out of it.”

I turned around, folding my arms, and just to spite her, said, “Then get prepared to wait forever.”

Irina snorted, shaking her head. “It seems like you don’t know how things work around here,” she said, trying to approach me again, but the guards stepped in front of her.

She hissed but continued, her harsh eyes fixed on me. “As long as she’s proven pregnant, she’ll stay here as the mother of the Pakhan’s heir until the baby is born and a DNA test is done!”
