Not True…
ARABELLA’S POV
As if Irina’s statement didn’t hurt enough, she burst out into an obnoxious laugh, clutching her stomach like this was the best news she’d heard all year.
A knot formed in my stomach, even more uncomfortable than the weight I felt in my chest.
“Isn’t it quite ironic that even though you seem so excited, you’re still in pain?” I asked, walking up to her. “Whether Tatiana is pregnant with his baby or not, you’ll still remain the maid who wants him but will never get to have him.”
My words cut deep, and Irina’s grin disappeared. “Watch that tongue…”
“Just shut up!” I snapped, my nostrils flaring. “Laugh all you want, but Tatiana staying in this house doesn’t favour you either!”
Maybe I was just frustrated and was pouring my anger out on her, but that was her fault, not mine.
She came up to me, and now, she was going to face the consequences.
“I… I don’t want the Pakhan…”
“Makes no difference because you can never have him.” I sneered, cutting her off. “So instead of tormenting me for your miserable life, how about you go find something else to do?”
She frowned, trying to push past the guards. “You…”
“I’m done with this conversation,” I said, waving my hand dismissively and walking into the room, closing the door behind me.
I clutched my chest to ease the pain I felt and walked to the bed, slipping under the covers and closing my eyes, my blood running cold through my veins.
Unpleasant thoughts swarmed my head, chasing away any wink of sleep I had been close to getting.
I let out a frustrated breath and sighed, but just then, the door opened, and I stilled, every muscle in my body tightening as a prickling sensation crawled through me.
He was here.
I heard the door shut and click locked, and then I heard nothing until the closet door slid open. A few tense seconds later, I heard it close before he moved to the bathroom.
I was now completely buried beneath the covers, and I stayed that way for several minutes until the bathroom door opened and my nerves spiked.
“I know you’re awake.”
Alvise’s deep voice sizzled through the silence, and my eyes widened, shocked by how close he now was.
“I wasn’t trying to hide it,” I murmured, digging my nails into my palm.
“I can see that,” he said dryly. “I want to speak to you.”
don’t want to talk.” I lied, snuggling deeper into the covers. “If I’m in the mood tomorrow…”
Alvise pulled the sheets off me, grabbed my wrist, and yanked me up until I was kneeling on the bed, looking up at him.
“What was that for?” I hissed, refusing to meet his eyes, afraid he would see everything I’d been thinking.
“Look at me.”
Slowly, I did, and his piercing gaze almost knocked the breath out of me.
“It’s not true,” Alvise said, his eyes searching my face.
The knot in my stomach loosened, and I almost felt relieved.
Almost.
“Did you… ever sleep with her?”
I rolled my eyes and turned away, done with the conversation, but he grabbed my hand and pulled me forward, leaning down to look into my eyes.
“I’m not jealous, if that’s what you’re implying.” I told him, faking a smile. “I just… Wanted to know how many people you’ve been intimate with since we almost slept together without using protection…”
“I’m clean.” He said, cutting me off firmly. “And no, Arabella, I was never intimate with Tatiana”
I released a breath I didn’t know I was holding, and a wave of relief finally flowed through my chest.
“Okay.” I rasped, looking down at his hold on my wrist before flicking my eyes back up.
“Why is she accusing you of the pregnancy then?”
“That’s what I’m trying to find out,” Alvise said, his voice back to being cold. “I can understand Alexei’s intention, but hers is still not clear.”
“She likes you.” I blurted absentmindedly, recalling how she almost sent me to jail because of him. “A lot.
Alvise didn’t give a reply to that. He just nodded and ran his hands through his slightly damp hair.
He’d taken a shower, and the sight of his damp, thick lashes made me fist his T-shirt and tug him closer. “You have some really good genes.” I muttered, staring at the sharp features of his face and his hypnotizing eyes.
“Are you certain it’s the genes or just me?” Alvise asked smugly, the corner of his lips lifting up.
I opened my mouth to speak, but my heart almost lurched out of my chest when his hands slid down my sweatpants.
“W… What are you… doing?”
Alvise moved his hands down my panties, and I sucked in a breath, a moan escaping my lips the moment he brushed his thumb over my wetness.
His eyes darkened, and he brought his fingers to his mouth. “Reminding you who gets you wet again.”
