Sheltered Life…
ARABELLA’S POV
I liked to think of myself as an unpredictable human, though that was probably the biggest liet could ever tell myself.
I was as predictable as a person could be, and that was why, after Alvise shattered my heart with his words, I’d run up the stairs and almost cried my eyes out.
Almost.
But for the first time in a long time, I chose to hold back every single tear and settle for staring out the window in silence instead.
I’d been standing there for over two hours.
I didn’t know how to feel.
It was supposed to be a good thing… right? That I was torn between letting myself feel hurt and disappointed and simply pretending none of the things that were tearing my heart apart had ever happened.
He didn’t want to deal with my emotions.
That stuck with me.
I’d always felt there was physical tension and attraction between Alvise and me. That was never a question, but I never really wanted to believe it because I was scared of being wrong.
You see, for me, right from the first time I met Alvise, I’d placed him at the top of the list of things I could never have.
And as someone who’d lived a completely controlled life under her parents’ watch before university, meeting the rich, stoic, handsome Russian senior was like staring at diamond jewelry through a store window and wondering when you’d ever be able to afford it.
I immediately thought he was ‘out of my league,’ and because all my parents had ever told me growing up was, “All you need to do is study, stay in your room, and don’t go wanting things you can never have,” it stuck with me.
I always believed I couldn’t have a lot of things.
My relationship with my parents had always been complicated, but I never let myself think about it or address it. I never even thought about them unless Archie brought them up.
But today, for some reason, they crossed my mind, and I realised I hated them.
Would my life have been different if I hadn’t grown up so sheltered and secluded from an actual social life? I’ll never know.
Why was any of that relevant to what happened today with Alvise? I was still trying to figure it out.

But one thing was for sure… it was connected. I definitely overreacted and shouldn’t have made such a big deal out of everything, and yes…. I was too emotional.
But his words hurt me, and now, standing there in silence with myself, I wondered how we were supposed to work. I wanted more than just physical attraction and… intimacy.
I wanted a man to love me as much as I was going to love him.
I wanted that man to be Alvise… only him, but…
I knew nothing about him… who he really was, and now, I had just discovered he was never going to try to connect with me emotionally or be vulnerable with me.
We were a recipe for disaster.
“My legs hurt,” I mumbled to myself before finally turning away from the window and heading to the bed for a nap.
I needed it.
I woke up after sunset and had another shower just for the sake of it before changing into sweatpants and a tank top.
“I’m hungry,” I said under my breath as I grabbed a headband and tied my hair into a ponytail.
A knock on the door stopped me in my tracks, and I frowned, turning around.
“Who’s there?” I asked, taking slow steps toward it.
No response.
If the guards outside weren’t saying anything, then that meant it was Alvise.
My blood ran cold, and the air seemed to dry up in my lungs at the thought of seeing him.
I’d locked the door from the inside, so, taking a deep breath, I unlocked it with shaky fingers and then took a step back.
The doorknob turned, and the door was pushed open, revealing the tall man now towering over me.
I looked away before our eyes could clash and walked back to the mirror, pretending to still be busy tying my hair as he shut the door behind him.
“Dinner will begin in thirty minutes,” Alvise said, walking past me toward the closet. “Make sure you go down for it.”
I didn’t respond, and he didn’t seem like he was waiting for a response either.
Stupid goosebumps rose on my skin, and I walked to the bed to sit down.
Alvise exited the closet a minute later, his face stoic and unreadable as he walked into the bathroom and closed the door a little harder than necessary.

“What’s up with him?” I said to myself, scoffing bitterly.
at idly on the bed until he walked out of the bathroom later, fully dressed in black pants and a grey T- shit, his hair damp from the shower he’d just taken.
“What are you still doing here?”
I looked up to find him staring at me, his jaw hard and one brow raised.
I frowned. “Excuse me?”
His blue eyes flared with disapproval. “I told you dinner will begin soon.”
“And I heard you.”
Alvise swiped his thumb over his lip and walked to the nightstand.
“Yet you’re still here.”
I bit my lip and shrugged, ignoring my shaking fingers and spiking nerves. “I believe thirty minutes isn’t up yet.”
The veins in his hands protruded as he picked up a box from the nightstand and opened it.
“It isn’t,” he agreed. “But I’ll have you know that you must not be late.”
