ARABELLA’S POV

I frowned, letting his words register.

Abeli… Danilo Abeli.

The same man we ran into at the clothing store?

“Why would you want to take me to a ball that man is hosting?”

Alvise tilted his head to the side, the look on his face giving nothing away.

Nothing at all.

“Because you’re my wife, and when there’s a need to attend events together,” he glanced at his wristwatch before looking back up at me, “we’ll attend them together.”

“But you don’t like that man,” I muttered, shaking my head. “And you seemed pissed that he spoke to me and implied that we knew each other… So, can you see why I’m finding it difficult to understand why you’re taking me along… or why you’re even going in the first place?”

“No,” Alvise said, turning around and walking into the closet with the box. “I don’t.”

I squinted my eyes and bit my lip, staring at his retreating back.

As casual as he seemed about it, this wasn’t random, and the more I replayed our conversation in my head, the more I realized he was up to something.

I just didn’t know what.

Rubbing my hands over my sweatpants, I finally walked out of the room and shut the door behind me.

“Good evening,” I said to the guards, waving politely.

“Good evening,” they said in unison, their voices so deep and robotic that I smiled awkwardly and scurried

off.

I headed down the stairs, dreading every second of dinner before it had even begun.

The thought of eating with Alvise’s family was always repulsive, and I could compare it to throwing yourself into the jungle and letting the wild animals decide your fate.

After giving myself a mental pep talk and approaching the table, I gasped in surprise when I found it empty.

“Am I that early?” I mumbled under my breath, taking a seat right next to Alvise’s.

“Good evening, madam.”

I looked up to see a maid beaming at me as she walked over to the table to set it with napkins and cutlery.

“Hi, how are you?”

“I’m fine… you’re very pretty.”

Heat rose to my cheeks, and I chuckled sheepishly. “Thank you… I’ve never seen you around before.”

“Yes,” she nodded, wiping her hands on her apron nervously. “I’m new… I came in as the replacement for another maid.”

“Another maid?” I asked, furrowing my brows. “Do you know her name?”

“Yes,” she nodded. “Irina.”

What?

My face fell, more from shock than anything else. “Irina is no longer a maid here?”

“Yes…” the lady nodded, leaning closer to whisper, “I heard the Pakhan…” Red stained her cheeks, and she batted her eyelashes as she looked at me. “Your husband… sacked her.”

I gasped, covering my mouth with my hand.

It was dramatic, really, but I couldn’t help my surprise.

The most important thing in Irina’s life, according to her, was her job as a maid in Alvise’s house.

It was the reason she didn’t want her feelings for him to be known, and now… she no longer worked here.

Why did Alvise fire her?

My mind drifted back to our last encounter, when I pulled her hair and he walked in on us.

Could that be why?

Did he really fire her for me?

“Madam… I’m sorry, you look sad. Did you like her?”

I burst out laughing, staring at the new maid in disbelief. “Like her?” I scoffed, shaking my head without a second thought. “The exact opposite.”

I despised Irina, and I didn’t think that would ever change.

Not after how many times she mocked me unprovoked and tried to hit me several times.

I was the happiest about her getting sacked.

The new maid smiled, clutching her chest in relief. “Oh, okay, but she’s…”

She was cut off by approaching footsteps, and she ran off before I could stop her.

I straightened, my body on high alert as Alvise came to sit down next to me, his familiar scent wafting into

my nose.

I turned to look at him, playing with my fingers under the table before asking, “Did… you fire Irina?”

He glanced at me, his piercing gaze almost overwhelming. “Who the fuck is that?”

I blinked. “You don’t know her?”

Bored and uninterested, Alvise pulled out his phone and leaned back in his seat. “Get straight to the point.”

“You’re rude.”

“Thank you.”

“It wasn’t a compliment.”

“Even better.”

I huffed out an annoyed breath, looking away from him. “I don’t even know if this conversation is worth it anymore.”

“Riveting.”

Tired of the back-and-forth and his dry replies, I gritted my teeth and finally spoke. “Irina is the maid you gave the task of packing my bags when you kidnapped me.”

“Interesting choice of words,” Alvise mumbled, his voice cold and disinterested.

I turned my attention back to him. “Do you remember now?”

He looked up, the weight of his attention almost choking me as he spoke. “Try again.”

I had a feeling he knew exactly what I was talking about and was deriving pleasure from making me explain myself.

“The maid you caught me pulling her hair,” I snapped, folding my arms. “Remember?”

“I do. What about her?”

“I heard she no longer works here… did you really sack her?”

A muscle in his jaw ticked, and he turned his attention back to his phone. “You know the answer to that question.”

A hint of satisfaction flickered in my heart before I pushed it down and shifted my gaze to the table. “Thank you.”

“I didn’t do it for you.”
