His Pov- Betrayal
ALVISE’S POV
Twenty-four hours.
It had been exactly twenty-four hours since I was told my wife was the rat I was looking for.
Twenty-four fucking hours.
I knew what torture was like.
I’d known all my life, and it had never bothered me. I could take it on the chin.
Being betrayed? I didn’t give a shit.
I could just kill anyone who betrayed me, and it wouldn’t be a thought in my head the next day.
But how could I fucking kill her?
How could I even think of putting the lights out of the one human I cared enough to keep alive every damn day?
From the second Andrei told me they’d found out she had a tracker on her, I hadn’t been able to think without feeling the urge to punch the wall or empty my bullets into something… someone.
She betrayed me.
“Of course she did,” I chuckled darkly, swirling the glass of vodka in my hand before throwing it back in one
I’d not seen her since last night.
I was keeping my distance for her own good because I didn’t trust myself not to hurt her if I was close.
The fact that she was still breathing was raising questions… not just amongst my men, but within me.
No one else would have gotten away with this.
No one.
If she’d done this because of what I’d said to her yesterday, it would have made more sense. But that couldn’t be the case because we went to the store in the morning and had the confrontation in the afternoon.
Of all the humans she could betray me to, it just had to be the one fool I couldn’t stand.
Ridiculous.
A knock sounded on the door, and I shifted my gaze to it, leaning back in my chair.

Everyone knew not to disturb me when I was in my study, so that narrowed the options of possible intruders down to one.
Arabella.
I scoffed, fixing my cufflinks as I pushed the button that automatically unlocked the door.
The lock clicked, disrupting the cold silence, and seconds passed before she finally turned the doorknob and pushed the door open.
“Alvise?”
Her quiet voice flitted through the room, her scent filling my space as she walked in.
The study was pitch-black, with all the windows closed and my dark blinds rolled down to keep out any trace of sunlight, yet she was able to walk straight to my desk.
“Why are you in a dark room when it’s still daytime outside?” she whispered, her green eyes locking with
mine.
“What are you doing here?”
Arabella flinched, like my question had caught her off guard, and her eyes dropped to the floor.
“Are you avoiding me?”
That was the greatest understatement of the century.
“I am,” I said, rolling the ice left in my tumbler glass, the clicking sounds filling the room.
“I knew it,” she whispered under her breath, but I could still hear her.
For some reason, I was hyper-aware of every fucking thing she did.
And even now, with her dainty fingers twisting against each other, her sparkling white nails glowing in the dark as she did so, I was aware.
“I’m still upset with you,” she mumbled almost hesitantly, taking a deep breath before she spoke. “But… I want to know why you haven’t had anything to eat all day.”
“And how do you know that?”
“I asked the maids.”
I tilted my head to the side. “Are you trying to poison my food and kill me?”
“Can anyone kill a man like you?”

No. They couldn’t.
Not unless I let them.

And by letting her walk around scot-free after selling me out, I was slowly letting her do that.
The thought of it made my blood boil.

It was riveting to think about all the possible motives that would lead her into the cunning hands of Danilo Abeli.
I couldn’t even say I didn’t know why she would want to work with my enemy.
I did.
Arabella wanted to escape and go back to London. She didn’t want this marriage, and she’d made that clear from the very beginning.
This was my sign to let her go if I were a sane man.
Too bad I wasn’t.
I would cut my own wrist before I let her slip through my fingers. I couldn’t give her all she wanted… no.
But I’d already admitted I was a selfish man, and when it came to her, that selfishness ran deeper than the hollow darkness in my heart.
“Alvise? What are you thinking about?” Arabella asked, a hint of worry in her voice. “You’ve been acting quite strange since you got back yesterday…”
I placed my glass on the table. “I have a question for you,” I said, rising from my chair and stalking towards her, the bright green of her eyes the only thing holding my attention.
