Dangerous Answer…

ARABELLA’S POV

In and out.

I struggled to breathe, still dazed and shocked by Alvise’s question.

I felt him move, pulling something from his pocket, and then suddenly, the light flicked on.

I flinched, staring back into those blue depths and ignoring the heat of his hands as they came back down below my hips, pulling me flush against him and making me shudder.

I didn’t have an answer to his question.

Would I leave if I were able to walk away freely? Would I leave the marriage… him?

Two weeks ago, I probably would have said yes… because everything had happened so fast and suddenly. Coming to Russia and then getting married had been a lot for me to take in all at once.

It still was.

But right now, even though there was still so much distance and so many issues between us… I couldn’t come up with an answer.

I dropped my gaze to the floor, raising my hands to gently push Alvise to the side so I could walk away.

He didn’t budge.

“I only came to ask if you’ve eaten,” I said, clearing my throat. “Why are you getting so serious?” I joked, my heart beating hard against my chest,

Long fingers gripped my chin, raising my head until I was looking at him, my bottom lip trapped between my teeth.

“Answer the question,” he instructed, his eyes hard and narrowed.

“Would it make a difference?”

“What?”

“My answer,” I mumbled, squinting my eyes. “If I said no, would you let me go?”

“No.” Alvise answered without a trace of hesitation. “I won’t.”

I shook my head, letting out an unamused chuckle. “So then why bother with the question?” I said, trying to get out of his hold again. “It makes no difference.”

“It makes a difference to me.” He trailed his hands back up to my waist. “So answer it.”

I tensed in his hold, the feel of his stripped muscles beneath my touch suddenly overwhelming as I pondered his question over and over again.

“Two weeks ago…” I muttered, forcing myself to meet his eyes, “I would have asked for my freedom… even though there would have been a bit of regret.”

He raised a brow, taking a step back and folding his hands behind his back. “Regret?”

I nodded, rubbing my hands together to chase away the chill the absence of his touch brought. “Yes.”

“And what would you have regretted?”

I stared at him in disbelief, blinking as my mouth fell open. “Are you asking me that?”

Alvise slid one hand into his pocket, tilting his head to the side. “I just did, yes.”

I smiled, shaking my head as I walked past him, deliberately brushing my hand against his and feeling a small thrill at the way he tensed.

“I can understand my own confusion,” I whispered, stopping in front of the door and turning to lean against it. “I mean, you’re cold and intimidating… Anyone would find it difficult to understand you.”

Alvise turned around, his voice lazy at the edges as he asked, “what are you driving at?”

“But I think I’m an open book to an extent,” I continued, ignoring his question. “And I’ve been pretty blatant…” I bit my nails and shook my head, watching as his eyes followed every movement. “… Well, not that I could hide it anyway, but I’ve been quite obvious, don’t you think?”

He shot me a blank look, glancing at his wristwatch and stroking his chin. “Get to the point, Arabella.”

I crossed my ankles and batted my lashes. “Why do you think I came to your apartment that night?”

“I don’t know. You tell me.”

I scoffed, giving him a hard look. “You must have thought something… so say it.”

The corner of his lips lifted, but there was no hint of amusement on his face. “I never thought about it.”

I could tell he wasn’t being honest, but I decided to stop dancing around it and go straight to the point.

I stalked towards him, grabbed his suit jacket, and stepped on his shiny black shoes, rising onto my tiptoes.

Grabbing his collar, I pulled at it until he leaned down, our faces a breath apart.

“I had a crush on you,” I said, heat rushing to my cheeks. “I did for three years before I finally mustered up the courage to go to your apartment.”

Alvise’s face remained stoic, with no reaction to what I said, except for his hands sliding beneath my waist to stop me from falling when my toes got tired and I fell back a step.

He kept his full attention on me as I leaned in to whisper in his ear, “And that crush never really went away,
