I smoothed my hand over the red ballgown I had on, staring back at my reflection in the mirror, the diamond jewelry on my wrists and neck glinting beneath the light.

The dress and jewelry had been sent to the room in the afternoon for Danilo Abeli’s ball, and just as the sender had instructed, I got dressed and ready before 7:30 p.m.

The sender was my husband, the same man who had told me only hours ago that he wasn’t capable of giving me what I wanted.

The same man who now walked out of the closet, fully dressed in a navy suit, diamond cufflinks almost matching my necklace, his expression as stoic as ever.

“Are you ready?” Alvise asked, his eyes fixed on his wristwatch.

“As you can see.”

It wasn’t lost on me that there was something fishy about his sudden interest in honoring Abeli’s invitation.

Rozaliya had stressed that Alvise would never want to attend anything Danilo Abeli was hosting.

That alone was enough to confirm my suspicions, but either way, I was going to attend the ball with him.

Because only then could I see for myself what he was up to.

Alvise’s eyes met mine through the mirror, but instead of looking away when the weight of his gaze became too much, I held it, refusing to be the first to break eye contact.

Eventually, he averted his gaze and slipped his hands into his pockets.

“Then let’s go.”

“After you.”

A muscle ticked in his jaw, and he rubbed over it with his thumb, muttering something under his breath before turning around and walking out of the room.

I drew in a deep breath and slowly exhaled. “I’ll be fine.”

I exited the room, waving at the guards as they greeted me, something I was beginning to realize they only did when their boss was around.

“Arabella!”

I stopped dead in my tracks, my brows furrowing as the sound of heels clicking against the marble floor filled the air.

“I’m so glad I ran into you!”

I turned around, a smile forming on my lips when I realized it was Rozaliya.

“Good evening!” I greeted, looking down at her dress. “You look beautiful… are you going somewhere?”

She wiggled her brows, grabbing my wrist and pulling me towards the stairs. “Apparently, we’re all going to Abeli’s ball.”

I gasped, pausing at the top of the stairs. “And this has never happened before?”

“Color me surprised,” she said, tugging on my hand so I descended the stairs with her. “Though my father isn’t coming along for some reason. He’s been hiding in his room all day… and, well, my mother is with him.”

I sighed in relief, thankful that I’d completed twenty-four hours without seeing Alexei and Mrs. Valerio.

“I don’t want to drive alone, so can I please tag along in your car?” Rozaliya asked as we reached the foot of the stairs and headed towards the door.

I smiled, scratching the back of my head.

It wasn’t my car, but… she was a breath of fresh air compared to the broody man I wanted nothing to do with, so I nodded. “Of course, you can!”

“I knew I liked you for a reason!”

I chuckled as we walked outside, only to find Alvise already leaning against his car several feet away, waiting.

“I see him!” Rozaliya said, releasing my wrist and placing her hand behind my back to guide me towards him.

“Good evening, brother.”

Alvise looked up from his phone, his eyes finding me first. Something unreadable passed between us before he slowly, almost hesitantly, dragged his gaze to his sister.

His eyes narrowed. “What are you doing with her?”

“You mean my sister-in-law?” She draped her hand over my shoulder. “We’re just hanging out.”

He scowled, his gaze fixed on her hand. “Remove it.”

“No.”

Alvise pushed off the car. “I’m giving you exactly five seconds.”

“I…”

He removed her hand from my shoulder and pulled me towards him, his hand sliding firmly around my waist.

“Stay away from her, Rozaliya.”

Ignoring the way my body relaxed as his familiar scent filled my senses, I wiggled out of his touch. “I don’t want her to stay away from me.”

She was the one person who actually put in the effort to be nice to me.

There was no way I was letting him scare her away.

I felt Alvise’s hard gaze burning against my face, but I ignored it, refusing to look at him.

Rozaliya smiled and walked to the backseat. “Let’s go, Pakhan. You heard your wife.”

“What are you doing?” He asked, cocking his head to the side.

“I’m tagging along with the both of you.”

“No, you’re not,” Alvise said firmly. “Go take another car.”

“I already asked Arabella, and she said it’s okay,” Rozaliya muttered, looking at me. “Right?”

Why was she putting me on the spot?

I groaned inwardly, smoothing my hands over my dress. “Yes. I said she could come with us.”

Alvise glanced at me, his eyes darkening. “Did you, now?”

I bit my lip, clearing my throat. “Hmm.”

“Get in the car, Rozaliya,” he ordered, and the moment she got into the car, he grabbed my arm and pulled me flush against his chest, his large hands firm around my waist.

“What are you doing?”

“Did you do this to spite me?”

I scoffed. “Not everything is about you. I wasn’t even thinking about you when I made the decision.” I lied.

He leaned down, his aftershave filling my senses. “You’re upset with me.”
