I bit my lip, my stomach fluttering with so many butterflies and mixed emotions that it felt overwhelming.
He missed me.
“But I’m right here,” I whispered, looking up at him.
Alvise’s thumbs drew slow circles over my dress, his hands resting on my waist as he shook his head, his eyes sparking with a hint of anger. “We’ve barely spoken,” he murmured, tapping my hips lightly. “And you’ve been upset.”
“You’ve mentioned that a lot,” I said, craning my head back to look at him. “Do you hate it when I’m upset?”
“I do,” he said without a hint of hesitation.
I smiled, but it slowly disappeared when the reality of our situation came crashing back down on me.
As if he could read my mind, Alvise lowered his lips to my ear, his rough, deep voice brushing against my skin as he whispered, “I’ll try.”
My eyes widened.
Did… did I hear him right?
Goosebumps rose across my skin, and I pulled back to look at him, but he stepped away and glanced at his
wristwatch.
“We’re getting late, Arabella,” he muttered, opening the door for me.
Still dazed and wondering if I’d misheard him, I stepped into the car, clasping my fingers together as I processed his words.
He’d try.
It was just two words, but I knew exactly what he meant.
What changed?
Alvise rounded the car and got into the driver’s seat, the hairs on my body standing yet again as he settled beside me and pulled his wristwatch from the center console.
“You’re driving?” I asked, my voice barely audible.
He looked up, his eyes piercing. “Yes.” He clasped the wristwatch around his wrist. “You know I can drive, right?”
Heat stained my cheeks, but I rolled my eyes. “Yes, I know. You’ve driven me quite a number of times,” I said dryly, leaning back against the leather seat.

Alvise’s gaze lingered on me for a second before he turned his attention back to the car and turned on the engine.
“I impressed with how well you both have forgotten about my existence.”
I choked on air, turning my head to the back to see Rozaliya lounging in the backseat, her eyes fixed on us.
I smiled politely and turned back toward the road, scratching the back of my head.
Did she see the kiss?
I don’t think she was paying attention…
“And you might want to reapply your lip gloss, Arabella.”
My eyes almost bulged out of their sockets, and I dug my nails into my palm, red staining my entire face
She definitely saw.
Now, I knew never to kiss Alvise in front of any of his relatives.
Especially his sister.
It was weird.
Wordlessly, Alvise drove through the large gates and pulled into the road, with his guards driving in front of us and behind us.
The entire drive was silent, with no one saying a word or attempting to start a conversation.
I was basically struggling because every time Alvise dropped his hand to his side or leaned down to take something, our fingers brushed, and the contact made me shiver.
Every.
Single.
Time.
“Finally,” Rozaliya exclaimed when the car finally pulled to a stop in front of a building.
I glanced back at her. “It was a long drive, right?”
She huffed out a tired breath. “It definitely was,” she said, waiting for Alvise to unlock the door before stepping out.
“What’s your relationship with my sister?”
I stilled, the air inside the car suddenly tense as Alvise’s question settled between us.
“That’s a weird question,” I murmured, looking at him. “I don’t know how to answer that.”
“Stay away from her.”

It was an order.
face fell. “Why? There’s no harm in me speaking to her…”.
“I don’t want you to,” he instructed, pulling his phone from his pocket.
I blinked. “Surely, you don’t expect me to speak to only you every day, right?”
He flicked his eyes up to me, hard and serious. “I do.”

I chuckled lightly, gently tapping his shoulder and watching as he tensed beneath my touch. “I think I’m rubbing off on you. You’re becoming quite funny.”
“I don’t joke, Arabella.”
“So you’ve said,” I hummed, looking out the window. “But you definitely do because there’s no way I’m going to be speaking to you,” I glanced at him, “a man who barely talks, all day.”
“Interesting. We’ll see about that,” he muttered, and before I could get another word out, he stepped out of
the car.
A guard rushed to open my door for me, and I got out, finally taking in my surroundings.
The building looked like a hotel, and cars lined every available space, with people flitting in and out.
“I can’t wait for the night to be over,” I huffed under my breath, adjusting my ring.
“You ready?” Alvise asked, approaching me.
I held his gaze and nodded. “I think I am.”
