I felt Arabella tense beside me, her steps faltering before she leaned closer to me, almost shaking.
Something was wrong.
“What’s the problem?” I asked, halting and turning to her.
“I just saw her, Alvise,” she whispered, her voice stricken with fear. “She’s here again… I think she’s following me…”
My fingers brushed against the gun tucked into my waistband as I pulled her to my side, my gaze sweeping the room. “Who?”
“Francesca,” she said, struggling to breathe. “I saw her here just now, but now I can’t find her, and…”
“It’s fine,” I told her, drawing light circles over her waist. “She can’t hurt you.”
She wouldn’t dare.
And if she did, she would die.
That didn’t matter anyway because I’d planned to kill her tonight.
And it was going to happen.
“I know, but…” Arabella placed her hands on my chest, her horrified eyes staring back at me. “Seeing her makes me uncomfortable, and…”
“I know, baby. I know,” I said, searching her face.
I prided myself on not giving a fuck.
I’d established that already.
But like I said, that rule never held any weight around the woman standing in front of me.
And worse, whenever I remembered her brother’s airhead ex fiancée had the nerve to manipulate her for so long, I had the urge to kill her myself.
Francesca.
That was the unfortunate woman’s name.
I never cared to know a thing about her, except for the fact that she was always around, like a leech I couldn’t get rid of.
I didn’t lay hands on women or kill them brutally.
But that didn’t matter when I discovered she was the culprit. I’d thought of ways to end her life. Painful, torturous ways that would have her begging for death.

But before doing any of that, I had to make sure my anger didn’t override my plan.

Pedro told me she wasn’t working alone, so I made my men lock her up and then wait to see if anyone would come to take her out.
Another deranged fool whose name I couldn’t care to remember was the victim.
She helped Francesca escape, so it was clear they were working together. What wasn’t clear was their relationship.
I wanted to handle this case myself instead of entrusting it to my men, so I lured Francesca to Russia, knowing full well her accomplice would come along.
“Alvise?”
I looked down, turning my attention back to my wife.
“Hmm?”
Arabella licked her lips and tugged on my suit jacket. “I know you said you lured her here before… Is that how she’s able to attend these underworld events without being killed? She was at the last ball we attended
too.”
One of my men is currently keeping her under his roof, and she attends these events with him believing she’s one step ahead of me and will get the chance to kill Arabella soon.
“Yes,” I said, guiding her into the large hall. “But you don’t have to worry about her.”
She sighed, reaching down to clasp her dainty fingers with mine, her touch tightening my muscles instantly.
My jaw twitched, and I swiped at it with my thumb, cussing under my breath.
The woman had no idea how much restraint I had to put on around her.
Twenty-nine hours.
Just over twenty-nine hours since I got the call from Andrei, and I was still giving her the benefit of the doubt, even though I’d seen the evidence myself.
She had a tracker in her purse.
The same purse she carried on the day we left the ball and again when I took her to the clothing store.
I’d destroyed it immediately, but nothing could compare to the rage I’d felt, and still felt, thinking about it.
I was furious.
So furious that my grip on her hand tightened a little as we reached the middle of the large hall.
“Alvise,” she hissed, snatching her hand away. “You’re hurting me.”
I released her hand.

“I’m sorry,” I apologized, scraping my tongue over my teeth.
was fucking apologizing now.
Absurd.
I’d also kissed her barely an hour ago, right in front of my men.

The same men who were waiting for my order permitting them to lock her up or kill her for betraying me.
That was never going to happen.
I knew it, but they just didn’t know it yet.
A day.
A day of her being upset and giving me an attitude was all it took to cement my decision to never let her
Like I repeated almost every day, I couldn’t give her everything she wanted.
But I told her today I was willing to try.
Try…
It was a promise I knew I could never fulfil, even though I was willing to.
She still didn’t know about Albina.
She knew nothing about me… the parts of me that I’d never shown to anyone… or the truth about her.
Would she stay if she knew?
One thing was for sure…
I wasn’t looking forward to finding that out.
“Pakhan, I’m incredibly honoured that you honoured my invitation.”
I looked up, tilting my head to the side as Danilo and his fiancée approached us.
“Not this woman again,” Arabella hissed under her breath, shifting uncomfortably on her feet next to me.
I glanced at her, but I didn’t get a chance to ask what the problem was before the hosts stopped in front of
“Abeli,” I said dryly, shoving my hands into my pockets.
“Pakhan.” He nodded. “Welcome.”
