The air dried from my lungs, my heart skipping its next beat as I struggled not to give in to my/now-weak legs, Danilo’s statement throwing me completely off balance.

It finally clicked.

I could feel the man standing next to me tense, his body burning against my skin through my dress, but I was too trapped in the terrifying discovery I’d just made to think about that.

Danilo was the “enemy” William said wanted to help me the night I ran from the restaurant…

It was him!

Shit.

My palms turned sweaty, and all I could do was twist them together, my eyes fixed on Danilo’s dead ones.

I never asked for his help.

What had William done? I was now in the middle of something I knew nothing about, with Danilo thinking we were some sort of secret partners… And then there was Miss Alonzo, now scowling at me, probably believing that I was really having an affair with her fiancé.

I was done for… completely.

But none of those things could compare to the fear that gripped me now…

Fear for what Alvise would do.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I blurted, refusing to stutter even though I was shaking.

I had to get it together, or else any sign of hesitation to defend myself wouldn’t go unnoticed by Alvise.

He noticed everything.

Danilo raised a brow, the scowl on his face deepening. “Are you accusing me of lying?”

I shrugged, refusing to glance at Alvise even though I could feel the weight of his gaze on me.

“Yes,” I said, tipping my chin up. “You’re accusing me of seeking your help to escape my marriage… in front of my husband,” I muttered, digging my nails into my palm.

Alvise finally moved, tactically using the guise of glancing at his wristwatch to step away from me before folding his hands behind his back.

“Abeli,” he muttered, his voice low and threatening, “I want to believe that you still have your brain strapped in your head.”

Silence settled around us, dangerous and full of warning.

Danilo straightened, his jaw hardening. “I believe I do, Pakhan…”

When tell me where the fuck you got the audacity to stand in front of me and speak to my wife.”

I flinched, instinctively taking a step back as Alvise’s voice roared through the room.

Miss Alonzo slipped her arm around her fiancé’s, dropping her gaze to the floor, but Abeli shrugged off her touch and took a step forward, looking around and flashing the onlookers a smile as if he had everything under control.

“If we’re going to do this,” he gritted, his smile faltering as he turned back to look at Alvise, it can’t be here.”

“You must be a joker to think you can tell me what to do,” Alvise retorted, his hands still folded behind him. “Now tell me.” He tilted his head to the side, his jaw so hard the veins along it protruded. “Where did the stinking audacity come from?”

Danilo’s smile disappeared, and his eyes darkened. “I don’t want us to cause a scene…”

“Get to fucking talking, or else you’ll be forced to do so right here with a gun pointed to your damn throat. I’m giving you five seconds.”

I watched, shocked and confused, as Danilo glanced at his guests again before turning back to Alvise.

He feared him.

But he was hiding behind not wanting to “cause a scene.”

“I didn’t want to disrespect you, Pakhan,” Danilo said, the hesitation clear in his voice as he looked at me. “But your wife…”

“You look at her one more time,” Alvise stepped forward, towering over him, “and I lose all the self-control I’m hanging on to,” he warned. “Do not piss me off.”

“I mean no disrespect, Pakhan.”

“Bullshit.”

“I promise you, I never intended…”

“Your word is worth a burnt warehouse to me,” Alvise snapped. “Completely useless.”

Danilo’s eyes turned red with rage. “You are insulting me in front of my fiancée, Pakhan.”

”

“I haven’t even started.” Alvise hummed, glancing at Miss Alonzo. “She should brace herself for more of these. After all, she’s going to marry a loser.”

My ears rang, and I gasped, but that was quickly forgotten when Miss Alonzo fell back a step, almost losing her footing as she stared at Alvise like he was going to eat her alive.
