Clarity…
ARABELLA’S POV
:
I waited patiently, my heart thundering in my chest, but Alvise said nothing.
“Alvise…”

He stepped forward, stalking towards me until he stopped right in front of me, towering over me and filling the air around us with his scent.
“What would that answer do for you, Arabella?” he asked, searching my face.
“I just want to know,” I mumbled, pressing myself further against the window.
“There’s nothing going on between that woman and me,” he said, his eyes boring into mine. “Nothing.”
I took a deep breath and looked away. “That doesn’t answer my question.”
I was digging my own grave, but I’d never stopped thinking about it. I just wanted to know.
I needed to know.
Alvise slid his hand around my waist, pressing me flush against his chest, his eyes never straying from my
face.
“Yes.”
I swallowed hard, nodding as I attempted to step away from him, but he placed both hands on my waist and hoisted me up until I was straddling him.
Wordlessly, he carried me to the bed and sat down with me still straddling him.
My breathing turned irregular, and I looked away, not trusting myself to hide exactly how I felt.
I didn’t even know how I felt.
“That doesn’t mean anything,” he muttered, drawing circles on my waist with his thumb.
I looked at him, raising a brow. “You’re still in contact with a woman you’ve been intimate with,” I said dryly. “And that doesn’t mean anything?”
“It doesn’t,” he said firmly. “I told you already that it’s not what you think.”
I tried, really tried to understand what he meant, but I couldn’t.
“Then explain what it really is,” I breathed, frustrated. “You keep saying that, but you never explain.”
A muscle ticked in his jaw, and he tilted his head to the side. “Do you think I’m cheating on you?”

I didn’t.

As twisted as that sounded, despite everything that was going on, a huge part of me believed he wasn’t cheating.
And I hated that I trusted him so much without having the facts straight.
“At least not physically, no,” I mumbled.
“And what does that mean?”
“You made her laugh, Alvise,” I said, chuckling dryly. “And you were on a video call with her. You’ve never done that with me.”
I sounded stupid, but the thought unsettled me.
Alvise watched me intently, as though he were taking in every word that came out of my mouth. His unwavering attention only made me continue.
“It feels like this woman… whoever she is to you… knows you better than I do, and…” I hesitated, swallowing hard. “I don’t like that.”
He swiped a thumb across his lips, the veins on the backs of his hands protruding.
He didn’t say a word.
Nothing.
“Okay…” I tried to get off his lap. “Forget I said any of that.”
He tightened his grip on my waist, refusing to let me go.
“We grew up together, in a way.”
I froze, barely daring to breathe for fear of discouraging him from speaking.
Alvise’s face remained stoic, his jaw set hard, a clear sign that he didn’t want to talk about it.
I cleared my throat and asked softly, “So… you started off as friends?”
“I never had any friends.”
I blinked. “Not even one?”
“Not even one.”
Even though my parents had kept my life under strict control, I’d still had one or two friends at school.
Of course, looking at Alvise now and seeing how cold and dangerous he was, I could understand why he might not have had any friends.

But back then… as a child?
“Then what was she to you?”
He stroked his chin. “I don’t know. We were always in the same environment so we spoke.”
He didn’t want to say anything more.
I could see it in the way he tensed and his eyes darkened.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, running my fingers through his hair. “You don’t have to tell me everything now if you don’t want to. We’re married, right?” I whispered. “We can always talk. I just want you to know you can talk to me.”
Something flickered in his eyes, and slowly, he relaxed into my touch, bringing his lips dangerously close to mine.
“I don’t fucking deserve you, baby.” He caught my bottom lip between his teeth, sucking on it before gently tugging at it. “But you know what?”
I blinked, pulling back and pressing my lips to his nose to annoy him. “You’ll never let me go?”
Alvise chuckled, the sound rumbling through his chest and making me shiver.
I pulled back, watching him as a smile appeared on his lips. The sight was so foreign that I stilled, fixing my full attention on it.
He had a dimple.
He had a fucking dimple.
Heat rushed to my cheeks, and I struggled to hide it, rubbing a hand over my face.
“What’s the problem?” He asked, his gaze travelling to my cheeks as I covered them.
“You have a dimple,” I said, as though it were the most unbelievable discovery in the world.
Alvise raised a brow. “I do?”
He was teasing me.
I hit his chest playfully, shaking my head. “You do!” I grabbed his collar, pulling his face closer. “And I can’t believe you’ve hidden it for so long.”
“You’re flustered,” he observed, his blue eyes searching my face.
“I’m not,” I denied, jumping off his lap and catching him off guard. “It’s just the weather in Moscow… it’s crazy.”
Alvise nodded, rising to his feet and slipping his hands into his pockets, his eyes never leaving me.
