ALVISE’S POV

I hated surprises.

There was nothing great about being caught off guard by the unexpected and then having to deal with the aftermath.

I always preferred to plan ahead.

No matter what the situation was.

So, it was irritating, and that was an understatement, to pull out my phone and see a call from Archie Whitmore.

I didn’t like it.

Not when his sister was standing right in front of me.

I slipped the phone back into my pocket immediately, fully aware that Arabella had spotted his name too.

“Archie?” she mumbled, her green eyes filling with worry as she searched my face. “Have you been speaking to him?”

I folded my hands behind my back, tilting my head slightly to the side.

“I haven’t,” I said truthfully.

This was the first time he had called since I’d been informed that he was searching for her.

I was already aware of what he wanted… or rather, who he wanted.

But there was a problem.

His sister was now my wife.

Mine.

I had no plans of flying her back to London because there was every possibility that she would never come back if I did.

That didn’t mean I couldn’t take her back whenever I wanted to, but I wasn’t about to bother testing that theory.

I didn’t want to.

My phone rang again, breaking through the awkward silence as I held my wife’s confused gaze.

“Aren’t you going to get that?” she asked, glancing down at my pocket. “He’s the one calling.”

“I’ll get it later,” I said, sidestepping her as I walked toward the closet.

She followed me.

“But, Alvise…”

I turned back, leaning against the console table as I watched her step into my personal space.

“Does he know now?”

I knew exactly what she was asking, but I feigned ignorance.

“Know what?”

Arabella sighed, placing a hand on her hip.

She was onto me, but she played along. “That you’re the leader of a crime organisation?”

I swiped my thumb across my lower lip to hide the smirk threatening to appear. “I wouldn’t exactly call it that.”

“That’s what it is,” she said dryly, although I could tell her mind was still fixed on the call. “Brotherhood or Mafia… whatever you want to call it, it’s still illegal.”

“Way worse than that,” I muttered, “but I get your point.”

“You’re trying to distract me. Answer the question… Does Archie know now?”

“He doesn’t.”

Her shoulders sagged, and she bit her lip, her gaze dropping to the floor as she tried to conceal the disappointment on her face.

“Does that bother you?”

“Huh?” She looked up at me. “What?”

“The fact that your brother might not like the idea of you being married to me.”

“I don’t know,” Arabella whispered, twisting her fingers together.

Well, I did.

It bothered her.

She scratched the back of her head, avoiding my gaze for a moment. “Archie might be okay with it since you both are best friends, right?”

He wouldn’t be.

I had never revealed my identity to him, and that alone would piss him off.

“That doesn’t matter,” I said, straightening up. “I don’t need anyone’s approval to stay married to you.”

I couldn’t care less about whatever anyone else had to say about our marriage.

Arabella didn’t look convinced. She bit her nails and tapped her foot against the floor, her restlessness becoming increasingly obvious.

“Did you start packing for the trip?” I asked, walking toward a glass panel and sliding it open.

“Oh… I completely forgot about that.”

I picked out a change of clothes before turning to look at her.

“You were too busy plotting a visit to the pathetic man I locked up.”

“You mean my friend?” she snapped, glaring at me. “And yes, I was too busy doing that.”

In a few weeks, he wouldn’t exist, but she didn’t need to know that just yet.

“I’m giving you exactly twenty-four hours to finish packing,” I said, walking past her. “Or else I’ll do it for you, baby. And you wouldn’t like that.”

I twirled a pen between my fingers, staring at the stack of contracts awaiting my signature on the desk in front of me.

It had been exactly four hours since I’d showered, gotten dressed, and left our room to come to my study.

Four hours without seeing a certain green-eyed woman.

Yet, she was all I could think about.

Partially.

A knock sounded on my door, and I leaned back in my chair, pressing the button that automatically unlocked

The lock clicked, and I waited, expecting to see the woman who had been haunting my thoughts for the past

four hours.

But I was disappointed.

Blonde hair appeared around the edge of the door before Tatiana stepped fully into the room, a ridiculous smile plastered across her face as she left the door open and approached my desk.

“Pakhan…” she trailed off, stopping in front of me. “Good afternoon.”

I didn’t have time for this shit.
