Packing for a trip had become one of my least favourite things to do, and after spending over three hours doing just that, I was exhausted.
I’d gone to Alvise’s office right after and had just walked out of it with his debit card.
I rolled it between my fingers, thinking of all the ways I could spend it.
Nothing came to mind yet.
But surely, something would soon.
“Sister-in-law!”
I halted, a smile playing on my lips as I turned around to see Rozaliya walking towards me.
“You look beautiful,” I said. “And that dress…” I pointed at her maxi, silky, ruched dress. “Is insane.”
“Thank you!” she hummed, twirling to give me a proper view. “And I can see you’ve got another revenge dress on. This time, in another colour.”
I chuckled, shaking my head. “It’s not a revenge dress.”
“So you’ve said. But you’re not fooling me.”
I rolled my eyes. “Where are you headed?”
“I just want to lounge in the living room. I’m bored.” Her blue eyes searched my face. “Want to join me?”
I bit my lip, considering it for a moment.
I nodded. “I currently don’t have anything better to do.”
“Let’s go, then.”
We walked down the stairs side by side before heading to the living room, where we settled onto a large couch.
“So, tell me, how are you?” I asked, turning to face her.
I’d found what happened at breakfast with her father extremely disrespectful, and I couldn’t believe he’d spoken to his own daughter that way.
It was awful.
Rozaliya must have caught on to what I meant because she waved her hand dismissively, fixing her attention on the TV as she grabbed the remote.

“Forget about what happened today. I’m no longer thinking about it.”
I frowned. “Is it because it happens often?”

She glanced at me. “Yes and no,” she muttered. “It only happens when I talk back, which I usually don’t.”
“Oh… okay,” I mumbled, refusing to press further in case I offended her.
“I have a thick skin,” Rozaliya continued, a dark chuckle escaping her. “I got it from my brother.”
There was a hint of softness in her voice as she referred to Alvise, but it disappeared as she continued.
“And I have a sharp mouth and a very spiteful glare.”
I nodded in agreement. “You do.”
I’d known that from the moment I’d stepped foot in the house.
Though she’d been nicer to me than everyone else had been, I’d discovered she could be mean when she wanted to.
And that sharp mouth? I’d gotten a piece of it when she judged my outfits at the dining table.
“Excuse me?” Rozaliya scoffed. “I’ve broken all my rules about ignoring strangers just to be nice to you!”
“Yes.” I shook my head, laughing. “I’m just saying I know you can be mean when you want to be.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment,” she said, smirking.
Watching her, I couldn’t help the growing smile on my face.
She was like the female version of Alvise.
Cold and unapproachable.
The only difference was that she could control who she showed that side of herself to.
Alvise couldn’t care less.
“You’re from London, right?” Rozaliya asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.
“Yeah.”
Something unrecognizable flickered in her eyes. “I’d wanted to go there after I discovered it was where my brother had gone.”
There was a hint of pain in her voice, making my brows shoot up.
“So… why didn’t you go?”
She laughed, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Not everyone would dare to do what he did at that age… or get away

with it. He broke all the rules and made everyone fear him while he was at it.”
“What… do you mean?”
“He was never supposed to leave Russia.”
“So…” I cleared my throat, twisting my fingers together. “Why did he leave?”
Rozaliya hesitated, glancing around to make sure no one was approaching.
“Something happened… but I won’t be the one to tell you about it.”
I took a deep breath, frustration settling in my chest.

How was I ever going to learn any of these things if the only man who could tell me about them never brought them up himself?
Back in university, I’d always wondered why Alvise had come to London, but I’d never gathered the courage to ask him.
I mean… we never spoke.
“At some point, I believed he was never going to come back,” Rozaliya said, snapping my attention back to her.
I frowned. “Huh… but he’s the Pakhan. How was he ever going to rule if he didn’t come back?”
Rozaliya stared at me blankly, blinking several times before shaking her head.
“He was never supposed to rule.”
I hadn’t seen that coming.
“What?”
She nodded. “Our family… my father wasn’t in line for that title. My uncle…” Her voice faltered, and she sighed. “He was the Pakhan.”
The uncle…
At the first ball I’d attended with Alvise, the one where there’d been a meeting with other members of the Bratva, I remembered some man… Urvan, I think, bringing up Alvise’s uncle.
Alvise had shut him down immediately, and I’d figured it was a risky subject.
Now, I was beginning to understand that it was worse than I’d thought.
“He died… right?” I asked carefully, almost hesitantly, trying not to offend her since it seemed like a sensitive topic.
