Not My Husband

ARABELLA’S POV

The air grew tense, silence falling over us as Rozaliya and I exchanged confused glances.

I looked up, a scowl forming on my face as my eyes locked with a pair of blue ones.

Irritation boiled inside me.

It wasn’t my husband.

Alexei rounded the couch, moving to stand in front of us, his eyes hard as he shifted his gaze from Rozaliya to me.

“And what were you about to tell her?” he snarled.

“N…nothing,” Rozaliya muttered, looking away from him. “We were just talking…”

“And who said it was okay to talk to her?” he retorted, shaking with fury despite his neck brace.

“I don’t understand what you mean, father…”

“Shut your mouth! Who gave you the damn permission to associate yourself with this outsider?”

“I gave her that permission,” I chimed in, digging my nails into Alvise’s card as I stared at Alexei.

Slowly, he turned his head towards me, raising a brow. “Are you speaking to me?”

What’s with people asking me that lately?

I looked around before bringing my attention back to him. “There’s no one standing in front of me except

you…”

His nostrils flared, a dark look crossing his face. “You’re a nobody,” he seethed. “An outsider that I will fight till my last breath to ensure is thrown out of this house.” He stepped closer, stopping directly in front of me, so close that I itched to kick him away. “So bring your eyes down and slam your mouth shut when I speak.”

I rolled my eyes, wondering what Alexei’s problem with me really was.

“Are you done?” I huffed. “If you’re done, you can kindly walk away because nothing you say is going to get to me.”

He clenched his hands into fists and attempted to lean down towards me.

“Get away from me!” I yelled, rising from the couch and sidestepping him. “Don’t touch me!”

“Father…” Rozaliya stood too, looking between us. “What are you doing?”

“Not another word!” he yelled at her. “Leave!”

“There’s no way I’m leaving you here with her,” she said firmly. “That’s not happening.”

Alexei turned his head towards me, a dark smirk playing on his lips. “I want to hear you talk back to me again. Just do it and…”

“And you’ll do what?”

I stilled, all the muscles in my body tensing as the familiar, deep voice filled the air, sending a shiver down my spine.

My eyes landed on him.

Alvise stood tall and intimidating, leaning against the wall with his hands tucked into his pockets as he watched us.

“Son,” Alexei said, stepping away from me and turning to look at Alvise. “I wasn’t aware that you were home.”

Alvise pushed off the wall and stalked towards him. “And if you had been? You wouldn’t have threatened my wife?”

“I wasn’t threatening her,” he lied, his voice hard at the edges. “We were just having…”

“Hold that lie on your tongue, or you’ll be forcing me to put a bullet through your skull.”

Alexei opened his mouth, closed it, then turned to glare at me.

“I can’t believe you’re speaking to me like that because of this sl…”

Alvise grabbed him by the collar, spun him around and landed a punch on his face so hard that Alexei’s head jerked to the side before he fell flat on the floor, blood dripping from his nose.

I gasped, staring at the scene with wide eyes, frozen in shock.

Soft hands wrapped around mine. “We should go up, Arabella.”

It was Rozaliya.

I glanced at her, my mouth falling open.

She looked unfazed as she whispered, “My brother’s pissed. I doubt he’s done.”

I looked at Alvise, but his gaze remained fixed on his father as he flexed his hands.

He really wasn’t done.

I wanted to stay, but I could tell he didn’t want me there.

I took a deep breath and looked away, pulling on Rozaliya’s hand and leading us up the stairs.

“Since he’s still busy down there,” she said once we reached the top of the stairs, “do you mind coming to my room?”

She looked hesitant, heat rising to her cheeks as though this were the first time she’d ever invited someone to her room.

“Of course,” I said with a shrug. “I don’t mind.”

Tead the way,” she mumbled, walking ahead of me and past my room.

“Do you know I’ve never been to this part of the house?” I asked, looking around as we climbed another flight of stairs.

“I’m not surprised. My brother isn’t exactly good at giving tours.

I chuckled. “I don’t think he’s ever given anyone a tour in his life.”

We finally stopped in front of a door.

Rozaliya unlocked it, pushed it open and walked inside. “Welcome to my little cave.”

There was nothing little about the room.

It was huge, almost as big as Alvise’s, but what caught my attention was the interior… or the lack thereof.

It was beautiful, minimalistic and, at the same time, classy.
