Spies…

ARABELLA’S POV

“Albina!” I yelled, rushing towards her, my legs moving faster than my brain could keep up.

Anticipation… Dread… Confusion… I felt it all, and I needed to know what the hell was going on

Albina halted, turning back slowly, confusion etched on her face even behind her dark shades.

She stared right at me, taking a step back and tipping her chin up as if she were trying to assert dominance

over me.

Light hair… the lips… it was her.

I was certain it was.

I’d made sure to etch her face into my memory when I’d caught Alvise speaking to her on the phone.

I wasn’t mistaken.

“Now look who we have here,” I breathed, shaking my head. “You all are really taking me for a fool, aren’t you?”

It was pathetic, really, and the more I thought about it, the harder it became to hold in the rage simmering within me.

“Who are you?” she asked softly, cocking her head to the side. “I don’t know you.”

“Save your lies and drama for who’s dumb enough to believe them!” I spat, taking a step closer to her. “Now tell me, what are you doing here dressed like this with your mother? And why are you in such a hurry to leave?”

Albina tried to walk away, ignoring me.

“Get out of my way.”

“Answer my question,” I hissed, blocking her path.

“Madam…”

I heard footsteps approaching, and from the corner of my eye, I could see some of the guards walking towards me.

“Madam, please get back to the car,” Igor said, trying to step between us.

“I like you, Igor, so don’t piss me off. Step out of the way!”

I knew what they were trying to do.

It was plain obvious.

They were trying to make sure I didn’t speak to her because, clearly, they had something to hide.

I was sick of it… the guessing game.

And there was no way I was going to let her leave without knowing what the hell she’d gone into that restaurant to do or why she was running like a thief.

Looking between us, Igor cleared his throat. “But, madam…”

I narrowed my eyes, staring him down. “I said, step out of the way. Now.”

He finally moved away, folding his hands behind his back and telling the other guards to step back

I faced Albina, taking another step closer until I was invading her personal space. “You went in there to talk to him, right?” I asked. “Alvise.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, so leave me alone and stop getting in my way,” Albina retorted, her voice sickly sweet and calm even though she was visibly angry.

It irritated me.

Before I could stop myself, I pulled off her sunglasses, finally revealing her face.

She gasped, her mouth falling open in shock as she stared at me blankly, her sharp brown eyes flashing with rage. “What… how dare you?”

“Leave her alone!” Rashell shrieked, pushing past the guards to stand with her daughter. “She has no business with you!”

I nodded. “Of course she doesn’t. That’s because she has business with my husband instead, right?” I pointed at the restaurant. “You met with him there, and now you’re trying to run?”

“And what if I did?” Albina snapped, her accent growing more pronounced as her calm demeanour slipped away. “Why do you think you have the right to question me?”

“Because I want to! And that’s enough,” I snarled, my chest heaving as I struggled to contain my rage. “So tell me, what is your relationship with him? And why are you sneaking around just to speak to him?”

Rashell pushed her daughter aside to stand in front of me, raising her index finger. “Enough! You have no right…”

“Please shut the fuck up,” I cut her off, glaring at her. “You gave me that right when you brought her up at breakfast and tried to put me down because of her. So don’t stand in front of me and act like a saint because you’re not. Pathetic? Yes, but a saint? Definitely not!”

Rashell’s face fell, her hands balling into fists at her sides.

“Did you just call me pathetic?”

“Yes. I did,” I said dryly.

Albina tried to sidestep her mother. “Don’t disrespect my mother like that…”

“What the fuck is going on here?”

The air tensed as Alvise’s cold, commanding voice cut through the uncomfortable silence, making Rashell

efused to look at him, even as the guards dispersed and I felt his hard gaze on me, the hairs on the back of my neck rising.

“Oh, nothing, really,” I muttered. “I’m just asking your favourite woman some questions.”

“Favourite woman?”

Alvise stalked towards me, grabbing my wrist and forcing me to turn towards him.

I hated how quickly I obeyed.

His eyes were so dark that the blue had disappeared, replaced by a hollow depth that would haunt my dreams for days to come.

“What do you mean by that?” he snapped, his jaw tight.

“I should be asking the questions, don’t you think?” I said, folding my arms. “Why did she meet up with you in there dressed like a thief and then rush out?”

Alvise swiped his thumb across his lips, tilting his head to the side. “How are you so sure that I met up with her?”
