Rashell cried out in pain, clutching her cheeks and falling to the ground dramatically.

“Why did you do that?” Albina asked softly, the perfect embodiment of grace and manners as she crouched down to touch her mother’s cheeks.

The melodrama was going to give me a rash.

I rolled my eyes, dropping the sunglasses to the floor before turning on my heel.

Igor stepped beside me, pointing towards the car. “Let’s go, madam.”

Taking a deep breath, I let Igor lead me to the car, ignoring Alvise’s threatening gaze.

The moment I got in, I leaned against the leather seat, my chest heaving as I tried to catch my breath.

I was exhausted.

And still hungry.

The smell of bacon and fresh eggs drifted into my nose, and I turned towards Alvise’s side of the car, shocked to see a paper bag placed there.

Alvise probably had someone bring the food to the car.

Not bothering to peek outside and check what he was still doing with the women, I grabbed the paper bag and tore it open, letting go of my pride and eating to my satisfaction.

I was almost done when the car door opened and Alvise got in, the tension radiating off him filling the

space.

“What was that about?”

I didn’t turn to look at him or acknowledge his question. Instead, I patted my lips with the napkin and packed my leftovers into the bag.

“Arabella.” His voice was impatient, the hardness of it sending goosebumps across my skin.

Calmly, I placed the paper bag on the centre console, my eyes meeting Igor’s in the rearview mirror before he looked away.

He was probably wondering where I got the audacity to ignore a man as powerful as Alvise.

Even I wondered the same.

“What the…” I yelped, the air drying in my lungs as Alvise grabbed my wrist and yanked me towards him until I crashed into his chest, my hair falling all over my face.

“Are you crazy?” I gasped, clutching his suit jacket and pulling back to blow some of my hair out of my face.

“Don’t you think I should be asking you that?” Alvise seethed, hoisting me up until I was sitting on his legs, his large hands coming down on my waist.

There was nothing soft about his grip.

“I don’t want to talk to you,” I retorted. “I don’t even want to look at you.”

“Too bad you don’t call the shots,” he said dryly, scraping his tongue over his teeth. “So tell me, why was that about?”

“What part? The one where I caught Rashell spying on me while hiding behind a car? Or when I confronted your precious Albina for running off while I was distracted by her mother?” I smiled making it as fake as I could. “Which one?”

Alvise stroked his chin, resting his head against the seat, his throat bobbing as he spoke. “First, it was my ‘favourite woman’, and now it’s my ‘precious Albina?” The corner of his lips lifted, dark amusement glinting in his eyes. “What next?”

I squinted, studying his face carefully. “You’re amused? You think it’s funny?”

“No,” Alvise muttered, his jaw tightening. “Nothing about what you did there was funny.”

“Oh, so now you’re turning everything on me?”

“I have told you many times already that Albina is not my mistress,” he snapped, his eyes narrowing.

“I know, but then what is she?” I asked, exasperated. “You’ve told me what she isn’t, but you’re not telling me what she actually is to you!”

Alvise swiped a thumb across his lips, his eyes boring into mine. “You said you’d give me time.”

I blinked, taking a deep breath and biting my lips hard.

“I did. And I will… but events like this do nothing but heighten my doubts. You were in the same restaurant as her, and she ran out… in a ridiculous disguise. Don’t you see how that looks?”

Alvise didn’t respond.

He just watched me.

Seconds flew by, and I believed he wasn’t going to say anything until he slid his hand over my waist and pulled me close, his nose brushing mine.

“Albina is my past,” he muttered, searching my face. “That’s all it is.”

A knot formed in my stomach, twisting uncontrollably. “That doesn’t explain anything. If she’s your past, why is she always a recurring topic?”

“You’re the one who keeps bringing her up.”

“Because you’re either calling her or meeting up with her…”

“We were betrothed as kids,” Alvise cut me off, his face stoic, as though he hated revealing that to me.

I blinked, shocked, but not entirely surprised.

lready knew they were betrothed.

Rozaliya had told me that already… so I was just shocked that he’d finally revealed it himself.

I shifted on his thigh, steadying myself and placing my hands on his shoulders. “Why?”

“It’s a thing in the Bratva.”

I swallowed hard, daring to ask, “So what happened? Why didn’t you marry her?”

Alvise wrapped his hands firmly around my waist. “The betrothal was cancelled.”

I sighed. “I mean, that’s pretty obvious… but why?”

“You don’t need to know why,” he whispered, his breath fanning my face. “So drop it, Arabella. I mean it.

I shrugged off his touch and slipped off his legs, settling back onto the leather seat. “Okay.”

I could feel him staring at me, the intensity of his gaze unnerving.

“Okay?”

I turned to look at him, forcing a smile. “Yes. Okay. I’m dropping it.”

The car suddenly came to a stop, and I looked outside, taking in our surroundings.

We were at the private terminal.

I opened my door before Igor could rush out to help me and stepped out of the car, taking a deep breath and exhaling calmly.

I heard Alvise’s door open, but I walked ahead of him, heading straight into the private jet, my handbag hanging over my shoulder.

I headed straight to the bed, sitting on it and slipping off my kitten heels.

I didn’t trust my mind not to spiral, so I tried to keep it blank as I sat with my legs crossed.

Alvise’s scent filled the air around me just as I heard approaching footsteps, and I immediately knew it was him before he came into view.
