“What?” I gasped, my mouth falling open as I stared at Alvise in disbelief, my heart rate picking up
I stood up and, without thinking, walked over to sit next to him, running my hands through my ir.
I knew Rozaliya had been devastated after finding out Caspian was coming back for her, but I never imagined she would run away.
My mind drifted to our last conversation, and I frowned.
Was that what she had been trying to tell me before Alvise interrupted?
I swallowed hard and turned to Alvise.
He was eerily calm, now leaning back on the couch and absentmindedly tapping a finger against it.
“Alvise?” I called softly, biting my lip.
He glanced at me, his blue depths holding me captive immediately.
He didn’t respond.
I continued anyway. “What are you going to do? Did she run away just now? If so, does that mean there’s still time to find her and…”
“Now you’re talking to me?” Alvise cut in, his face stoic.
“Yes. This is something serious…”
“And you ignoring me isn’t?”
“Well, you…” I breathed, too stunned to speak.
“When I speak to you, Arabella,” he muttered, undoing his cufflinks and rolling up his sleeves, “I expect you to answer. Immediately. Not when you want.”
I gave him a blank look, folding my arms. “And if I’m upset with you?”
Alvise shook his head, holding my gaze. “Don’t be upset with me.”
I chuckled, raising my brows. “You can’t order me not to be upset with you,” I said. “It doesn’t work that way.”
His large hand skimmed over my wrist, sending goosebumps across my skin as he traced the wristwatch he’d gotten me.
“Then how does it work?”
My eyes dropped to his hand covering mine, and I shuddered. “You have to stop doing things that get me upset… though I don’t think that’s something you can do.”

The corner of his lips lifted, and he cocked his head to the side. “It isn’t.”
hatched my hand away from his and grabbed a cushion, setting it on his thighs.
Alvise tensed, his eyes narrowing. “What are you doing?”

I lay down on the couch, placing my head on the pillow and glancing up at him. “I want to take aap.”
Alvise swiped a thumb across his upper lip. “And you want to do that…” His eyes travelled to my bud stretched out on the couch and then to my head resting on his lap. “…like this?”
I shrugged. “Yes… any problem?” I asked smugly, knowing full well that he was uncomfortable.
He watched me for several seconds, searching my face as though he were drilling it into his memory.
And then, to my surprise, he shook his head. “No problem, baby,” he said, threading his fingers into my hair. “I want you just right where you are.”
All I could do was stare at him, and slowly, a smile formed on my lips.
Alvise’s gaze dropped to my lips, something flashing in his eyes as he swiped his thumb across them.
I don’t know how long we stayed like that, but at some point, my eyes grew heavy, and I closed them.
But just before I let sleep fully pull me in, I thought I heard him say, “Mine.”
My eyes snapped open, and I stifled a yawn, stretching out my arms on the bed.
I frowned… on the bed?
How did I get on the bed?
I sat up, blinking my eyes rapidly to clear the blurriness as I looked around.
I was alone.
Where was Alvise?
Suddenly alert, I got off the bed and headed for the restroom.
I was halfway there when I heard sounds coming from inside, and I halted, my brows drawing together.
That was Alvise’s voice.
Slowly, I walked closer to the door, pressing my ear against it to hear what was being said clearly.
“…I don’t care. Just do what you have to do, and make sure he doesn’t worsen the situation before I get back.”
I pressed my lips together.
Who was he talking about?

“No casualties,” Alvise said firmly, and then everything went silent.

Before he could open the door and catch me eavesdropping, I turned on my heel and bolted, rushing back to the bed and sitting on it.
Seconds later, I heard his approaching footsteps, and then his shiny black shoes came into view.
I dragged my eyes up to look at him, only to find his eyes already fixed on me.
“You’re up,” he muttered, sitting on the couch.
“Yes,” I hummed, biting my lip. “Did I sleep for long?”
“You’ve slept through over half of the flight, Arabella,” Alvise said dryly, typing something on his phone. “So yes.” His eyes found mine. “You slept for long.”
I scratched the back of my head. “Isn’t that… weird?” Sweat formed on my forehead as a terrifying thought came to mind. “Uhm…” I trailed off, clearing my throat. “I think we need to start using protection.”
Alvise stilled, his shoulders visibly tense just as the air tightened uncomfortably, thick with tension and something far more suffocating.
I blinked, watching as he averted his gaze from me and turned his attention back to his phone, his grip on it so tight that I feared it would break.
My chest tightened, and my heart dropped to my stomach.
“You’re misunderstanding,” I told him. “I’m not saying I’m… pregnant or anything like that,” I explained, my voice breaking. “It just came to mind that we haven’t been using one, and I…”
“I like the feeling of being inside you, baby” he cut me off, looking up. “So we need to find an alternative.”
Heat rose to my cheeks, but it disappeared as quickly as it had appeared, and my face fell.
Despite his words, I could tell there was something about the topic that unnerved him.
I rose to my feet, attempting to walk away. “Okay, then.”
Alvise stopped me.
