A Piece Of The Truth

ARABELLA’S POV

There was something about the unknown that was appealing as well as absolutely terrifying.

It fired up your curiosity, almost sending you into a frenzy until you finally uncovered what seemed to be

hidden.

But then, when you got closer to the truth… the one you’d sought since the very beginning, someting about it began to feel almost unnerving.

Like you were suddenly scared you wouldn’t like what you might end up finding out.

Or worse… you suddenly felt like you’d be better off, or live better, not knowing at all.

Maybe it had something to do with human nature and its insatiable curiosity. And now, as I sat beside Alvise in silence while Igor drove us through the busy streets of Paris, a part of me felt like I wasn’t ready to know any more about Alvise’s life.

Surely, I could definitely just be exaggerating?

But what if I wasn’t?

“Doesn’t it hurt?”

I snapped out of my daze, turning to my side to find Alvise looking at me, his eyes searching my face.

“Huh? What?”

His eyes dropped to my hands. “Whatever you’re doing.”

I followed the line of his gaze to find my fingers twisted against each other, and as if my body had finally registered the pain, I yelped, releasing them from their painful grip.

“It sure does,” I hissed, stretching them. “I didn’t even know I was doing that.”

“Nor did you respond when I called you twice,” Alvise muttered, poking his inner cheek with his tongue. “Are you okay?”

I stifled a yawn, stretching my arms. “I don’t know. I’m just tired.”

And worried.

But I didn’t include that part.

“You said you called me,” I hummed. “What for?”

Alvise opened his mouth, about to speak, but then, as if he’d suddenly thought better of it, he shook his head. “Never mind, Arabella.”

“No… tell me.”

“It’s fine,” he said nonchalantly. “It was nothing important.”

The car slowed, and I turned towards the windscreen to see that we were pulling to a stop in front of a hotel.

A very large hotel.

The exterior was luxurious, and I immediately knew that the interior was going to be even better

My door opened a few seconds later, and I grabbed my bag, thanking Igor as I stepped out of the

“Where are our suitcases?” I asked, walking up to Alvise as he got out of the car.

“Someone will bring them up,” he said, casually placing his large hand in the small of my back and leading me into the hotel.

Just as I’d predicted, it was exquisite. As we reached the lobby, I busied myself with looking around while Alvise checked us in and collected our key card.

Once he was done, he walked to the elevator and pressed the button for the upper floor and I walked towards him just as the doors slid open.

“How long will we be staying?” I asked, following him into the elevator.

Alvise pressed the button for our floor and glanced at me, the sharp edges of his face looking even sharper under the elevator lights. “What? You’re already counting down till we leave?”

I flushed, shaking my head. “No… I just want to know.”

“Ah, I see,” he muttered, sliding his hands into his pockets. “I’m not sure yet.”

We stood in silence for the rest of the ride, and when the doors finally opened, I was the first to walk out.

Alvise walked past me, leading the way until we reached our room, and he unlocked it with the key card.

The moment we walked inside, I sighed in relief, letting out a breath I hadn’t realised I’d been holding when I spotted the bed.

I’d wanted it to be a room with a single bed.

Why?

If Alvise had chosen one with a double bed, it would have been clear as day that he despised sleeping on the same bed as me.

“You chose a single bed,” I said, turning to look at him.

Alvise shut the door behind him, his blue eyes finding mine. “I did.” He searched my face, raising a brow. “You look surprised.”

I nodded. “I am. I was starting to believe you despised sleeping with me…” I pressed my lips together, clearing my throat. “Well… you know the kind of sleep I’m talking about.”

Something unrecognisable passed through his eyes, and he stalked towards me, stepping into my personal

space. “I don’t despise sleeping with you, Arabella,” he muttered, tilting his head to the side. “I don’t despise anything about you.”

“Then tell me… why do you avoid it?”

He swiped a thumb across his lips. “I won’t be able to take my hands off you.”

My heart dropped to my stomach, my nails digging into my palms.

That wasn’t the reason.

I knew it.

But I played along… for now. “And what if I don’t want you to take your hands off me?”

Alvise’s eyes darkened, a muscle ticking in his jaw. “Careful, Arabella.”

I stepped impossibly closer to him, refusing to let him steer me away from the main subject. “There’s a reason… So tell me.”

He remained silent for several seconds, his face stoic and expressionless, as though he hated even the thought of answering that question.

“I told you I was betrothed to Albina… right?” Alvise finally spoke, his words making the air dry in my lungs.

Albina.

Why did everything have to revolve around her?

I nodded, swallowing hard as I waited to hear what he had to say, caught between dread and curiosity.

“I hated physical touch. I still do,” he mumbled, his voice hard at the edges. “Just not with you.”

Butterflies fluttered in my stomach as I held my breath, waiting for him to continue.

“But back then, Albina never got the message. Her parents always brought her over to the house, and she was everywhere, like a tick I couldn’t get rid of,” Alvise explained dryly. “Like I told you, we spoke at intervals, mostly in conversations initiated by her, but I never cared for it. And at some point, she believed we were friends.”

He looked irritated at the memory, and with each passing second, my heart beat faster, almost lurching out of my chest.
