Cornered

ARABELLA’S POV

Unease washed over me, my legs shaking as I stumbled back, alarmed. “Wh… What’s going on?”

Rick grabbed my hand, yanking me toward him so fast the air was knocked from my lungs. I struggled against his grip. trying to wrench myself free.

“Who are you?!” I yelled, my voice echoing through the room. “Let me go!” I screamed, fear surging through my survival instincts.

I was scared. So scared I felt like I was going to die from the fear alone.

He grabbed my waist and clamped a hand over my mouth, silencing me. I bit into his palm, refusing to give in, and screamed at the top of my lungs, even though the sound came out muffled.

“Shut the fuck up, bitch,” Rick warned, pressing something cold against my temple.

I stopped struggling immediately, my heart pounding as the realization hit me. He was pressing a gun to my head.

He removed his hand from my mouth. “See how fast I can silence you if I want to? Don’t fucking test me!” he said, nudging me toward the door.

My chest rose and fell rapidly, my entire body shaking violently as he dug the gun harder against my temple.

“You’re going to shut the fuck up and follow me without causing a scene. Because believe me, if you do, I’ll shoot you and then shoot myself in the fucking head.”

I winced as he pressed the gun deeper into my temple. “You don’t know how crazy I am until you see it.” He said, leaning closer, his lips brushing my ear. “Do you understand?”

I was numb. My mind was blank, and my body shook so violently my teeth chattered together.

I couldn’t believe it. I was still in denial, trying to convince myself this wasn’t really happening. That I wasn’t standing in a conference room with a gun pressed against my head.

“Answer me, bitch!” he yelled, making me flinch.

I nodded hesitantly, unable to force out a single word.

“Use your words!” he gritted, digging the gun so hard into my skin I felt the sharp sting of it breaking.

I barely recognized my own voice when I finally forced it out. “Y… y-yes.”

“Good.” He pulled the gun away from my temple and tucked it into the waistband of his pants before straightening and glaring at me.

“You’re shaking,” he observed, shaking his head. “Stop shaking.”

I couldn’t. It was like my mind and body were no longer connected, like I was losing my mind. Maybe I already had.

“I said stop shaking!” he barked, shoving me against the wall.

The impact snapped me out of my trance. I gasped, hissing in pain as I stared into his empty eyes.

None of this made any sense. Rick worked for Alvise’s company. I saw him there myself just yesterday and he said he worked in HR. So why… Why did he have a gun? Why was he kidnapping me?

“W… who are you?” I managed to ask, my lips trembling with every word.

tilted his head. “That’s nothing for you to worry about.” Then he grabbed my arm and dragged me toward a chair before forcing me into it. “Sit here and don’t move. I need you to stop shaking like a leaf.”

He pulled out his phone and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, pacing restlessly.

I tried to clear my head enough to think, but nothing could overpower the fear that had already consumed me.

I watched him quietly as he dialed the same number over and over again, cursing every time it failed to connect. Maybe my fear-ridden mind was playing tricks on me, but… He looked scared.

No. That couldn’t be right. He was the one who kidnapped me. I was the one who should be scared. And I was.

“Why are you doing this?” I whispered, my voice barely audible.

He heard me. He stopped pacing and shot me a murderous glare.

“I’m going to need you to stop fucking talking, bitch!” he snapped. “And stop with the questions, or I swear I’m going to kill us both right now.” He glared at me for another second before looking back at his phone, mumbling under his breath. “He’s going to kill me anyway if he gets to me.”

I couldn’t make sense of his words, so I stopped trying. Instead, I leaned back in the chair and searched desperately for a way to escape.

I had to get out. I couldn’t just sit around and wait for this psychopath to kill me. We were in a hotel. If I could just make it outside…

“Don’t even think about running.” Rick’s voice made me snap my head toward him. His phone was pressed against his ear as he stared at me. “Don’t think I’m too distracted to watch you. The moment you stand up. I’m pulling the trigger.”

Hooked away, swallowing hard, just as his phone suddenly connected.

He answered frantically. “Man, I’ve been trying to reach you! Where are you?”

Whatever the person on the other end said made him groan. He turned toward the windows again, dragging both hands through his hair like a madman.

“He’s still in the hotel… I swear if he catches me, I’m dead… You need to get here fast. Are you in the lobby…”

I tuned out the rest, dread tightening around my chest. Someone else was coming. That was bad.

I’d rather die trying to escape than become their willing captive.

Taking advantage of the brief moment he’d let his guard down, I shot to my feet and bolted for the door without looking back. I yanked it open and ran. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me. Faster.

Behind me, I heard him curse before his footsteps thundered after, ine. I didn’t dare look back.

I sprinted down one long hallway, cut into another, then raced up a flight of stairs with no idea where I was going. I wasn’t familiar with the hotel, but I refused to head downstairs in case the other person was already there.

I was breathless. My vision blurred. My head felt light, but I kept running until I slammed into something solid.

“Arabella?” The voice. His voice. It was Alvise.

My vision cleared slightly as I looked into, his eyes, my hands trembling while I fought for every breath.

I opened my mouth to speak. To ask for help. But then I remembered… He’d made it clear that I was never to ask him for

I just needed to catch my breath. I took another turn into yet another hallway when a pair of strong arms suddenly wrapped around me.

“I got her,” someone whispered in my ear. It was Rick.

Panting, I gave up. My body went limp against him, trembling uncontrollably. Then, just before everything went black. I’ heard a gunshot.
