A Shift

ARABELLA’S POV

Beeping. There were beeping sounds. Far too many of them, and they were making me stir.

I could hear muffled voices around me, and they were growing louder with each passing second. Why were people gathered in my room when I was trying to sleep?

My eyes snapped open, a strangled sound escaping my lips as a wave of weakness crashed through my body so violently iy almost stole the breath from my lungs.

“Arabella!” someone called, but my vision was blurred.

“Little Bella?” The voice was closer this time, and someone, the owner of the voice, was holding my hand.

I wanted to snatch my hand away, but I couldn’t. I could hear more muffled voices until one among them became familiar and then a door opened and closed.

“A… Archie,” I called out, closing my eyes before opening them again, finally able to make out the ceiling above me.

I turned toward the source of the voice, disbelief washing over me. “Wh… Where am I?” I asked, wincing at how weak the simple act of speaking made me.

Archie sighed, pressing a hand to his chest. “Arabella… You’re awake.” He smiled, gently brushing my hair away from my face. “You’re in the hospital.”

My brows knitted together as I finally looked around, surprise coursing through me when I realized I was indeed in a hospital room.

I turned back to my brother. “Why?”

The moment the question left my lips, blurred memories flashed through my mind. Me running… I was kidnapped…

My eyes widened, a nervous shiver racing through me as I yanked my hand from beneath the covers, ignoring the pain.

“I was kidnapped… Someone kidnapped me,” I told Archie, clutching his hand as though my life depended on it. “He has a gun…”

“Shh… It’s okay, Little Bella. I’m here now,” Archie soothed, tightening his grip around my hand. “No one is going to hurt you.”

I shook my head. He didn’t understand. “You don’t understand… I heard a gunshot…”

Archie’s grip tightened even more. “Don’t stress yourself, Arabella. You’re still very weak.”

I tried to speak again, but exhaustion washed over me, and my eyelids drifted shut on their own.

My eyes fluttered open again.

This time, I was surrounded by complete darkness, with no source of light anywhere in sight. My stomach growled, voicing exactly what I felt deep inside.

I needed food.

I was no longer as weak as I’d been earlier, but I was starving. I needed to eat.

“Archie?” I called, hoping for an answer. There was none.

Slowly, I tried to sit up, only to sink back against the mattress at the sheer difficulty of the movement. I tried a few more tires before I finally managed to sit upright.

“Why did you do that?”

I flinched, fear surging through me at the sound of the voice coming from a dark corner of the room.

My hands trembled as the memory of being kidnapped set every alarm in my body blaring.

“An answer. Give me an answer.”

Though I was still shaken, my shoulders relaxed just a little in relief. I recognized the voice. It was Alvise.

The relief quickly gave way to confusion. “What… what answer?” I asked hesitantly.

His voice came out clipped and icy, so calm that it frightened me. “You were in danger.”

I opened my mouth to answer, but he wasn’t finished. “And you ran into me.” His voice dropped to a dangerously quiet tone “But you didn’t say a word.”

I flinched at the harshness in his voice. Alvise sounded furious, and that was exactly what I couldn’t understand.

Ignoring the protests from my body, I refused to stay quiet. “Don’t you remember?”

A moment passed before he answered. “Remember what?”

“You said I should never ask you for anything,” I said quietly.

The tension in the room thickened, several long moments passing before Alvise spoke again. This time, there was no mistaking the anger in his voice. “You think what I said then applies to your fucking life?”

I swallowed. “You made it clear that I’m dead to you, Alvise.”

“Is that what you want?” he asked firmly. “To be dead to me?”

“Don’t ask me that,” I whispered, ignoring the ache of my empty stomach. “You said it yourself.”

“You clearly don’t know what it means to be fucking dead to me,” he said, his voice hardening. “Because if you did, you’d think twice before pulling something like this.”

I groaned in frustration. “Wgat did I pull?” I shouted, my whole body trembling. “You think I asked to be held at gunpoint?”

The room fell silent. Not just quiet… Eerily silent.

There had been silence before, but this was different. This was the kind of silence that made it feel as though I was the only one breathing in the room.

It was still pitch-black, and I couldn’t see anything, but I could tell he was no longer sitting when he spoke again. “You were held at gunpoint?”

I didn’t recognize that voice. It was Alvise. I knew it was, but something about the way he said those words was different from the man I knew.

I clasped my trembling hands together. “Y… yes.”

He started walking toward the door, his strides quick and purposeful.

Panic surged through me. “Alvise!” I called, stopping him in his tracks. “What are you doing? Where are you going

didn’t answer, but I heard him move again, closer to the door.

“Wait!” I pleaded. “Don’t go. Please don’t go.”

I didn’t know where he was going, or why I suddenly felt desperate to stop him. I just knew something had changed.

He was different now. Different in a way I’d never felt from him before.

I wasn’t begging him to stay because I didn’t want to be alone. I was begging because I could feel his rage.

It was terrifying. Why? I had no idea.

“Arabella?” he said, his tone unnervingly calm.

I swallowed. “Yes?”

Seconds slipped by… Then seconds stretched into minutes before his cold, emotionless voice shattered he suffocating silence.

“You decided to never ask me for anything again. Right?”

Not understanding where he was going with it, I answered hesitantly. “Yes…?”

He pulled the door open before replying, “Don’t stop now.”
