Secrets, Questions

ANABELLA’S POV

There was nothing worse than not knowing. The feeling of uncertainty, or worse, ignorance, was unbearable.

It was terribly destabilizing, and I would know because I was currently trapped in that exact dilemma.

I’d been discharged yesterday after spending forty-eight hours in the hospital. Archie had driven me straight to his apartment and insisted I stay there until further notice,

I hadn’t seen Alvise since he stormed out of my hospital room. Not even Archie had heard from him. I didn’t care.

Or at least, that was what I kept trying to tell myself.

But Alvise’s sudden disappearance wasn’t at the center of my thoughts. The kidnapping was. I felt like I was going crazy, like my mind was playing tricks on me all over again.

I turned to Archie, who was sitting beside me on the couch while I lay wrapped beneath a comforter.

“I can’t stop thinking about the whole thing, Archie.”

My brother’s expression hardened. “I already told you to let it go, Bella,” he complained, turning his attention away from the TV to look at me. “Focus on getting better first.”

I sat up, scrunching my face. “I am better,” I argued, glancing down at myself. “I was literally discharged yesterday.”

Archie rubbed his temples. “That doesn’t mean you’re perfectly fine yet. Just calm down.”

I groaned. “How do you expect me to calm down when you’re not listening to me?”

I kept asking him what had actually happened and how I’d ended up in the hospital, but he barely answered any of my questions. The only information I’d managed to get out of everyone was that I’d suffered a panic attack and that my body had practically shut down after the nonstop sprinting.

The fear, the adrenaline, and the panic attack had all hit me at once, and it had simply been too much for my body to handle.

According to Archie, Alvise had found me, brought me to the hospital, and then called him.

But the one thing no one seemed able, or willing, to answer was the part where I’d said I heard a gunshot. I knew what I’d heard.

I’d heard it loud and clear, and I had absolutely no doubt that it had been real.

What I wanted to know was who had been shot… or what had happened to Rick.

I also wanted to ask Alvise about Rick, especially since he worked at Alvise’s company. Then there was the other man Rick had been communicating with.

There was so much I wanted to know. Yet there was barely anything I actually did know.

Ironically, the one man who could answer most of my questions had made it painfully clear that I wasn’t allowed to ask him anything.

“I’m listening to you, Bella,” Archie said calmly, “but none of that is my priority right now. My priority is getting you better.” Before I could respond, he shook his head. “And no, you’re not better yet.”

I folded my arms and turned my attention back to the TV, a stubborn frown settling on my face.

thie spoke again. “Mom and Dad have been worried… They’ve been calling you.”

My eyes widened. “Did you tell them what happened?”

He scoffed, shaking his head. “Now, why would I do that? Of course I didn’t.”

A relieved sigh escaped me. “Okay… so why have they been worried about me?”

Archie gave me a dry look. “This isn’t the first time I’ve told you they wanted to speak to you.”

I groaned. “Don’t tell me you want to start another lecture about why I should call them.”

He rolled his eyes. “I’m being serious, Little Bella. You told me you were going to call them last time. Did you?”

I took a deep breath and looked away. No. I didn’t.

Archie groaned. “You’re not…” He was cut off by the doorbell.

I let out a quiet breath of relief, grateful for the interruption as Archie got up, walked to the door, and unlocked it.

The relief disappeared the second Francesca walked in. A huge fake smile spread across her face the moment she saw me.

She made a point of kissing Archie before slowly rubbing a hand down his back, only then turning to look at me.
