Chapter 22 Cut Me Off
During dinner, Tyren and Stanford clinked glasses over and over, reminiscing about the past and talking about Marquette Group’s future. Thalia just sat quietly, listening. It felt like the days before she ever got married.
She couldn’t help thinking that if Marquette Group hadn’t fallen apart back then, she might never have been forced into marrying Alden for the sake of business ties.
Tyren always kept his word. He’d promised Thalia could only have one drink, and he poured her no more than exactly one glass.
After the meal, Stanford still had work to do, so he headed to the study to take some calls. Thalia and Tyren chatted on the
couch.
From Tyren, Thalia learned that his family in Joseville was business owners and were doing well financially. He had left in a hurry back then because his parents had been in a car accident.
Their family also had an old rule–a three–year mourning period during which he wasn’t allowed to leave Joseville. That was why he hadn’t come back to Yebaku City until now.
“I get not being able to come back during that time. But why didn’t you ever reach out?”
That was the part Thalia couldn’t get over. Three whole years–not even a single call or text.
Tyren looked at her with a hurt expression, then reached over and flicked her forehead. “You were going to cut me off for Alden. If I had called, would you have picked up?”
“Why wouldn’t I pick up?” Thalia snapped, furious. “Do you really think I’m that petty?”
Back then, she’d said those cold words in anger because she couldn’t stand him trying to stop her. But she regretted it almost immediately.
Especially when Tyren didn’t show up to her wedding. She was crushed. She called him more than ten times, but he hadn’t answered once. Thalia was miserable and couldn’t even enjoy her own wedding.
Tyren laughed. “You were so mad. You even told me to stay out of your life. I figured I’d give you some time to cool off.”
“Some time? That was three years, Tyren. You bullied me.” Thalia grew even angrier, cheeks flushing and eyes reddening.
Tyren pulled her into a hug. “It was my fault. I hurt you, Lia. Sotheby is having an auction tomorrow. Come with me. If you see something you like, I’ll bid for it. Think of it as my peace offering.”
As he spoke, he reached somewhere and pulled out a gold–embossed invitation, passing it to her.
Thalia blinked. “Where’d you get this?”
“From a friend at the auction house.”
“Since when do you know people at Sotheby? How do I not know about this?”
Ordinary people couldn’t just walk into Sotheby. Even the current Marquette family didn’t have the status to attend. Yet, Tyren somehow had friends inside. Thalia couldn’t help being impressed.
Tyren looked away, pretending to play with the glass in his hand. “I’ll explain someday when there’s a chance.”
Remembering that Alden would be taking Kiera to the same auction, Thalia didn’t feel like going.
Then, Tyren said, “Mom’s keepsake is also going to be up for sale. Let’s buy it back together.”
“You mean the emerald bracelet?”
Tyren nodded.
