Ryan’s pov

The moment the words left my mouth, I knew there was no taking them back. The second they brushed the air, every council member looked at me stunned. Speechless.

They were all speechless.

The tension in the room grows and the council members look at each other unsurely.

Gavin on the other hand went rigid beside me. Slowly, his head turned, his eyes locking onto mine and for the first time since this started, that smug confidence cracked.

I smirked inwardly. Two can play that game. I am taking back what’s mine at any cost. Evie is my mate and I want her. She wasn’t his.

‘She’s ours,’ Apex roared in my head.

The council leader clears his throat and look between Gavin and I, his brows drawing into a furrow of confusion. “He claimed your mate? Luna Kimberly?”

Her hame made my skin crawl in disgust.

“No,” I stated. It was better to tell them the truth now. Especially seeing as Gavin was trying his hardest to keep Evie away from me. “My true mate. He claimed her when she’s mine. Evie.”

I watch the room ripple with confusion. “The leader of his warriors is my true mate.”

Shocked gasp rang out from everyone’s mouths except for Gavin’s. Instead he looked angry that I revealed the truth. He thought he could corner me, but I wasn’t about to lose Evie again. Not this time.

The council leader leans forward, confusion swimming in his eyes. ” Do you know what you’re saying Alpha Ryan? You’re saying Kimberly Gold is not your true mate?”

I nod. “She is not. Evie Gold is my true mate.”

Shocked whispers race around the room and my jaw clenches. I wanted to be done here so I can get back to my pack and back to Evie.

“Alpha Ryan…..are you saying that you’ve been bound to the wrong Luna this entire time?” The leader of the council’s tone had gotten cold and accusing.

What my parents had forced me to do was illegal under our laws. An alpha must always have his true mate by his side. But because of a damn prophecy, my parents took it upon themselves to ruin a sacred bond, even going as far as to not take heed to the laws.

If I continue speaking the truth I’d put them both in trouble with the council and standing now, without the woman I love by my side, I could care less what happens to the two people that caused me to go years without the love of my life.

“Answer the question, Alpha Ryan.” The council leader’s voice cut clean and icy through the whispers.

My jaw tightens as the weight of what I am about to do settles over me. If I do this, there would be no going back. Not for them.

Apex stirred.

‘They made their choice when they forced us to mate another.’

Yes. They did in fact make their choice. And I was about to make mine.

“Yes,” I said. The single word seems to echo louder than anything else I had spoken tonight. Silence follows quickly after but it’s

not the shocked kind anymore……it’s the kind that is far more dangerous. Fury. Silent boiling fury.

“You are admitting,” The council leader said slowly, his eyes narrowing on my face. If eyes could shoot physical daggers, then I would already be shot. “That you have knowingly maintained a false bond. An alpha, a leader, chose someone to stand by his side that isn’t his true mate and yet wonders how his pack became the way it is now?”

“I am admitting,” I corrected, my voice curling with irritation. “That I was forced into a bond that should’ve never happened in the first place.”

A chaos of questions ripples through the council members.

“By whom?” one of them pressed immediately, eyes staring at me like I was some kind of science project.

But the question…… the one that would burn everything down to the ground was now in the open air, waiting for me to respond. My fists clenched at my sides, nails digging into my palms. There would be no going back.

“My parents were the ones who did it,” I said coldly.

The room erupted. Some thought I was crazy and lying, while others seemed far more intrigued to know more. Gavin stared at me too, this time more interested in knowing more but then looked away when I caught him staring.

“What? But that’s impossible. An alpha pair violating sacred laws?” One utters in disbelief.

“What reason would they have to do such a thing and go against the moon goddess will?” Another gasped in outrage.

The council leader’s expression darkened and all traces of confusion disappeared now. “Explain. Now.” He demanded.

I looked around the room, staring at the faces that judged me and some that looked engrossed to know more. “There was a prophecy,” I said. “One they believed in more than the laws they swore to uphold. They listened to a witch who told them I must mate the strongest she wolf in our pack to secure the protection of the entire pack, that she wolf had been Kimberly at that time. They forced me to reject Evie, Kimberly’s sister.”

The air turns nasty and thick with strains of trouble as the leader leans in further. “Witch? A witch gave a prophecy?”
