Evie’s pov

“I don’t think it would be him,” I paced the floor, a finger on my chin in thought as my brows pinched into a furrow. My mind kept swirling the same thoughts over and over again. Nothing made any sense.

Lisa let out another frustrated groan from the bed. “There were too many of them Evie. Half the damn pack saw that fight. It could’ve been anyone.”

I stopped pacing.

Lisa had come to my room earlier so we could discuss training strategies for tomorrow morning. However, the conversation had strayed to the two alphas being summoned to the council court. We’ve been trying to think of who would rat them out.

She lets out an irritated breath and falls back on the bed and glares up at the ceiling. “At this point we won’t find out who,” she

groans.

She was right. We may never find out who, especially with there being so many warriors during that fight. Bringing them all in for questioning wasn’t an option at this hour.

A quiet silence settles over the room and I exhaled slowly. I press my lips together as I forced my thoughts to slow down and tease my fingers through my hair. Chasing this right now wouldn’t get me anywhere. At least not tonight.

“Fine,” I muttered but those words were more to myself than to her. “We will deal with it later.”

Lisa let out a loud huff of relief and rolls onto her side to look at me. “Finally,” she said. “Because you’ve been pacing like a mad woman for the longest. A little more and your footprint would stay permanently on the floor,” she jokes.

I shot her a look but didn’t bother to argue because she clearly wasn’t wrong.

Her brows suddenly furrow and her eyes look at me intently. “Why do you care anyway? It’s not like our Alpha is the one in

trouble….”

I stiffen and I don’t respond because, honestly, I didn’t know why I cared that someone ratted out Ryan. I shouldn’t care….I shouldn’t even be pacing my room thinking about the culprit…..

Then why do I?

My silence opened the invitation for Lisa to utter. “It’s because of him, isn’t it?”

I tear my eyes away from hers quickly before she can see the flicker of emotion in my eyes. But Lisa was never one to read the room and persisted. “It’s because of Alpha Ryan?”

I whipped around to shoot her an icy glare. “Don’t say his name!” I snapped into the air and Lisa flinched slightly.

However, she doesn’t drop the topic and like a mouse chasing the cheese, she refuses to give up. “You don’t have to pretend that you don’t care about him Evie. It’s okay to still care-

“Drop it Lisa!” I roared, seething as my expression warned her. The entire room went dead silent and Lisa looked like her heart had dropped into her ass. I would have laughed at her expression if I weren’t so mad at her for bringing up Ryan.

I turned away from her and dragged my hands through my hair as I tried to rein myself back in. I didn’t need her to see that I couldn’t handle my emotions when it comes to him. Even though I was doing a shitty job at masking it.

“Just….drop it,” I muttered again but this time my voice was weary and tired.

I could hear Lisa shift on the bed. “Evie…” she started softly. I turn around to face her.

“I said drop it,” I repeated, cutting into her words before she could finish them. My voice was softer but firmer and that seemed to have done the trick.

She let out a small sigh and leaned back against the headboard, raising her hands slightly in surrender. “Alright. I get it. I’m done. I won’t bring him up again.”

But even though she said those words, I could feel her eyes still on me, watching and thinking. I hated that I made it easy for her to see right through me.

My jaw clenched and strut to the chair beside the window. I picked up my coat, which I had lazily thrown on there and threw it on, I then slip on my shoes and Lisa eyes me suspiciously. “Where are you going?”

“Outside. I need a breather, and I can’t get it here,” I exhaled as I made my way to the door.

Are you sure you want to go out there-

“I can take care of myself Lisa,” I snorted as I opened the door.” Don’t wait up,” I attempted a joke before walking out of the room. Outside…I let out a sigh and closed my eyes for a second.

Wrong move.

The second I do, he pops into my mind. Ryan.

My jaw tightened immediately and I peeled my eyes open before pushing myself forward, feet moving down the dimly lit corridor. Almost everyone was asleep after that long training we had today, so this area of the pack house was quiet.

I slipped out through the back exit and the night air slapped against my face instantly. I draw in a sharp inhale and move.

‘Why do you torture yourself with trying to block him out?’ Serena murmured quietly. ‘You know you want to help him get out of the council court. You know that’s why you’ve been pacing your bedroom floor for answers. You want to help….him.’
