Evie’s pov
One moment I was still standing by his bed, the next I am breathing in the sharp scent of lake water as I am pushed into the memory of where the hatred had started.
“David! Kimberly!” I yelled as I ran through the trees. My feet were small then, I was small then. I had only been five years and was so tiny. Tinier than my twin sister Kimberly.
“Guys come on, this isn’t funny anymore!” I shout into the air and hoping Kimberly would come out with our little brother, David. But there was no answer. Just the sound of rustling leaves and the birds chirping on top of the very tall trees.
Kimberly and David had been playing hide and seek after our parents sent us outside to “enjoy the fresh air.” We were on one of their so-called vacations…..a family getaway at Dad’s cabin tucked deep in the woods. It was isolated, far beyond our pack’s territory and not claimed by any alpha. Supposedly, it was peaceful and safe.
My chest tightened as I pushed through the trees and the unforgiving cruel branches scratch at my arms. My poor lungs already burned from running and my legs were begging for mercy.
“Kimberly!” I called again, my voice cracking this time as the sounds of the scurrying animals made my heart race. “David!”
“Kimberly!” I called again, pushing past a low branch that scratched at my arm and left a faint trail of blood on my skin after it caught flesh. “I give up, okay? You win!” I yelled louder, hoping she’d hear me.
Still no reply from the two.
A small knot of unease twisted in my stomach.
Where could they be? I don’t like this game. I frowned, my heart speeding up when I heard a snap of twigs behind me. I picked up my pace and yelled for my siblings again.
Our parents said it was just us around here but seeing as this land wasn’t protected, anyone could come here. Humans…. vampires.
Suddenly, a sound breaks into the air. A faint splash. I froze and my heart burst with relief when I heard David’s familiar giggle.
My head snaps towards the sound and a relieved smile paints on my face. Got them.
I ran toward the sound of my brother’s light giggles. The relief alone was pushing me faster than my legs could handle.
“There you guys are!” I called out, breathless as I push past the last line of trees, only to stop dead in my tracks when I spotted David and Kimberly on the docks.
The dock stretched out over the lake, the dark wood looking worn and old. Our parents had warned us that there was a deep lake close by and that we should stay clear of it. Why did Kimberly bring him here?
This wasn’t a hiding spot at all.
My stomach twisted with unease when I saw David’s little body walk closer to the edge and the relieved smile I had on my face instantly disappeared. He was standing way too close.
“David!” I yelled, trying to get his attention because Kimberly seemed not to be stopping him. Instead, she stood there, watching him lean closer to the edge. My heart raced.
“David! Wait!” I yelled. Kimberly glanced at me over her shoulder and the look that flashed in her eyes from here chilled me to the bone.
“David!” I yelled louder as I hurried over to them. If she wasn’t going to stop him, then I will. Hearing my voice, David turned
and smiled.

“Evie, fishies. There are fishies in there,” his grin was bright, excited. That grin is permanently printed in my mind.
“Get away from here! Come to me David!” I yelled as my little legs hit the first edge of the wooden dock. But the second I do, Kimberly suddenly runs up to David and….her hand moves up, pushing him into the dark, deep lake.
David’s tiny body tipped forward, his arms flailing for a second before he disappeared over the edge. There was a loud splash as
the water swallowed him whole.
For a moment, I can’t seem to move. I dared not even breathe as I stared at Kimberly in shock as my mind refused to believe what I had just seen.
Kimberly…..pushed him into the lake.
Kimberly had pushed him……
“David!” I screamed, the shock snapping out of me as I move forward quickly and dropped to my knees at the edge of the dock. My small hands gripped the rough wood as I leaned over, my panicked eyes searching for him.
The water bubbled violently where he had fallen, the water so dark and murky that it made it hard for me to see his small figure. But then his hands flail up and my heart hammers harder.
“David!” I cried again, my voice cracking as I spotted his little limbs thrashing to try and fail to stay up. Bubbles were escaping his mouth as he struggled.
He couldn’t swim. Goddess, he couldn’t swim and neither can I.
I lay flat on the dock and tried to stretch forward to reach him but my arms were too short. I needed help.
“Kimberly help me!” I screamed, tears rolling down my cheeks as I watched our little brother struggle to stay up. “Hold my legs while I try to stretch to get him-
A sharp giggle floated in the air behind me, causing me to twist my head to look over my shoulder at her.
Kimberly stood a few feet away, just watching me with her head tilted slightly and her lips curled into something that didn’t belong on a child’s face. So cold and so detached. 1
The look made my heart pound.
“Why are you just standing there!” I cried. ” Help me save our little brother!” I begged,
“Kimberly!” I sobbed, my voice breaking as my fingers scraped uselessly against the dock, trying and failing to reach him.” Please!”
Another giggle slipped past her lips, one that made me feel like something crawled under my skin and settled in my chest like
ice.
“I told him not to lean so close to the edge,” she said, sounding so bored, as if we were talking about a stupid toy and not our drowning little brother.
My heart stuttered.
“What?” I cried out, confused about why she wasn’t helping me. “What are you talking about? Help me! Please! He’s drowning!”
David’s cries were getting weaker and the splashing….they were getting slower too.
“No, no, no…David!” I screamed, my entire body trembling as panic consumed me. I pushed myself up, stumbling to my feet as my mind scrambled for something…anything that could help me save him.
“I will go call mom and dad,” Kimberly said boredly and turned around and ran away before I could ask her to help me again.
Mom and Dad wouldn’t make it in time, even though they were wolves. I had to figure something out quickly.

My heart pounded so hard it felt like it was going to rip out of my chest.
Think, Evie. Think.
I dropped back to my knees, the splintered wood slashing at my skin as my small hands gripped the edge of the dock so tightly the wood dug into my flesh. My eyes darted frantically, searching for anything that could help and that’s when I spotted it.
A branch.
There, a long branch was lying near the edge. I scrambled toward it, my fingers shaking as I grabbed it and dragged it closer. I nearly slipped on the damp wood but I didn’t care.
