Evie’s pov

My jaw tensed the moment I heard her voice. Of course, she’d show up now. I straighten slowly. “What brings you here Stephie? “I don’t glance at her. I wasn’t scared of Stephie. Hell, I wasn’t scared of anyone here.

“You threatened one of the nurses here,” her voice is bitter, yet I can hear the slight fear in her tone, faint but it’s there. My lips twitch. Does Stephie fear little ole me?

“She came to me to inform me about it,” She continues, her footfalls sounding closer now.” But she didn’t have to, I took your stench the second you stepped into the building.”

I rolled my eyes. “Bravo, I suppose you need a trophy for being able to pick up scents,” I then barely glance at her over my shoulder.” Maybe you should’ve used that to pick out the vampires before they hit the pack. But then again, you were never a strong Luna, were you?” I snorted and let my gaze linger on her just long enough to make sure the jab landed.

Her eyes flashed angrily and my smirk deepened. “How dare you!” She snapped in the air, her voice loud but doesn’t alarm me. Nothing does anymore.

I brought my attention back to my father who looked at me with no emotion in his eyes. I was used to it so it didn’t hurt like it would normally do. “I guess the former Luna came here to pull me out of your room,” I can’t help the amused snort that left my mouth.

“But she reeks of fear,” I glance at her again. She stopped walking towards me now, just stood frozen where she is. “Why?” I

asked amused.

It’s not like I would attack her unprovoked.

Stephie shifts on her feet and her unease grows. Her eyes darted from me to my father before she uttered. “Because I don’t have much time left. Ryker and I, we want to apologize-

She stops suddenly and then lets out a tired breath.” Well, I want to apologize on behalf of him. We were wrong. We heard that you beat Kimberly today and we’re truly sorry for causing so much trouble between you and Ryan. Especially bringing a witch-

“A witch?” My mouth moved before I could stop it and her words died on her tongue. Stephie’s brows draw into a furrow, her eyes searching before she questions.” Ryan hasn’t told you……”

I frowned.” Told me what?”

“Oh,” she breathed out. “I guess he hasn’t mentioned it yet-

Her words get cut off again when the monitor shrieks loudly. It was so sharp that it made both Stephie and me wince.

My head snapped toward the bed as Dustin’s body jerked and a sharp cry left his throat. His hand flew to his chest, fingers clutching at the fabric violently. His claws ripped through it and he groaned in pain.

“No-“he choked out, his voice raw with pain.

Dustin gasped, his entire body trembling as his back arched slightly off the bed. The machine went crazy. “M mate “he rasped, the word shattering apart in his throat.

Everything clicked then. Margaret. Was dead.

Dustin Gold, the man who never cared enough to even look at me like a father would to his daughter….was breaking apart right in front of me.

His breathing turned jagged and his chest heaved as if every inhale of air into his lungs was like shards of glass cutting him open from the inside. His hand clawed where his heart is, like he was desperate to dig in and stitch the now dead bond back together if he tried hard enough.

“Bring her back-” he rasped, his voice so weak it almost didn’t sound like him at all. “Bring her-back- Mag-”

The monitor screamed louder and his eyes snapped to mine. “Y-you-” he choked out, his voice trembling. “You did this.”

I straightened, shaking my head in disbelief. Even now, standing before him, he still blames me. I let out a soft humorless laugh. “Still blaming me?” I asked coldly. “Even now?”

Before he could respond the door burst open and the pack doctors rushed in, their voices overlaying as they moved toward Dustin to try to stabilize him. I moved away then, watching the scene.

Margaret is dead. But who killed her?

There was no stench of death clinging to her earlier, so she hadn’t died from natural causes.

Something is going on in the pack.

I whip around, my eyes catching Stephie’s. ” His mate is dead. Why are you still standing there instead of going to the cells to find out what’s happening under your nose?”

She shook her head. “What point would it be when I will be joining her soon anyway?”

My brows furrowed at her words but I didn’t care for her riddles right now, especially seeing as Beta female is dead. She was an awful mother and I didn’t feel the pain of losing her but I know something was off with her death. And seeing as Ryan wasn’t here to figure it out himself, I will do it myself. 1

I shook my head in disappointment at Stephie and stepped to the side to walk towards the door. “Where are you heading?” her voice strikes above the sound of the frantically beating monitor.

“Since you, as the former Luna and the Alpha’s mother, won’t go to find out what’s happening in his pack, I will go myself,” I said curtly, my hands wrapping around the door handle already before she warns.

“You’re not allowed back there, Evie.”

I glance at her a little over my shoulder and lift one of my brows. “Will you stop me?” I challenged her.

I watched the way her throat bobbed as she swallowed hard and the way her fingers curled slightly at her sides into fists. She wanted to. I could see it in the way her muscles strained.

She wanted to tell me to stand down. She wanted to act like the Luna she used to be. To remind me of the rules and the place of

ranks.

But instead, she looks away, a silent action that tells me she stands down. I smirked. “That’s what I thought.” With those last parting words to her, I move out of the room and rush out of the infirmary.

‘Beta Margaret just died,’ I informed Lisa as I ran towards the cells.

‘What!?’ she gasped. ‘ Please tell me it wasn’t you who did it.’

‘I hate her but I wouldn’t kill her,’ I snapped, a bit insulted that she would think I’d kill Margaret unprovoked.

‘I know, you’re right, sorry,’ she apologizes quickly, then asked. “What’s happening now? Where are you going-

“I’m heading to the dungeon. Meet me there,” I utter and cut the connection before she could ask anything else.

The closer I get, the stronger the stench of blood swirls in the air. I can hear muffled voices, male voices. I slowed down a little as I tried to listen better and catch their words.

“The Luna escaped,” One utters.” But someone killed her mother. Whoever did it knocked out the guards too. Justin, Trevor, bring them to the infirmary to check for anything amiss.”

“Will do, Beta Brett,” two different voices utter simultaneously. Beta Brett? He must be the acting Beta since Dustin was down.
