Brett’s pov

The second that growl ripped through the air, every muscle in my body locked. It was Alpha Ryan’s and it sounded like he was about to splatter my blood on the grass.

Fuck.

My grip on Evie’s neck tightened instinctively for half a second before my brain caught up with my survival instincts. Too late. I already knew I’d crossed a line I shouldn’t have and now I was good as dead.

The warriors behind her went rigid and stepped back immediately, their heads lowering in submission quickly as the pressure of his aura rolled in like a tornado.

And then the second he stepped into view the air grows even more tensed. There he was, approaching us like a predator ready to strike, his bare form rigid, eyes glowing.

Fuck.

Apex had taken control. 1

My Heart sped up.

Think Brett. Think!

His eyes, so wild and untamed, furious pinned me down. “Release her.” He growled again but this time the warning was way

more intense.

My hand moved quickly before he could attack, dropping from Evie’s throat like it had been burned. I took a step back, then another as I try to garner some strength.

Evie is standing there looking irritated that he came to save her. With the way she was turning already in my hold, she would’ve attacked. She wanted to be the one to attack me.

“Alpha,” I started, forcing steadiness into my voice.” She-”

I didn’t even see him move because one second he was there and the next he was-

Pain exploded across my face as something slammed into my jaw with brutal force. My spine hit the dungeon doorframe behind me so hard the air got knocked clean out of my lungs. I slumped just beside the stirring guards, my own blood filling my mouth.

A groan ripped from my throat as I sag forward to catch my breath. Fuck. He hadn’t even let me finish my words.

Before I could even right myself, rough hands grabbed around my throat and yanked me up like I weighed nothing. My boots barely kissed the ground as Ryan forced me upright and applied pressure to my throat.

His face draw closer and stopped inches from mine. I froze as I stared into the eyes of his beast.

I’ve seen Alpha Ryan angry before; I’ve seen him untamed and brutal. But now….oh now this was something else entirely.

My throat bobbed.

“I gave you one order.” He snarls in my face.

A flicker of panic clawed its way up my spine. “I was securing a suspect,” I choked out as he cut my airway. “I was making sure she-

Pain exploded on the side of my face again but this time my teeth flew out of my mouth. Bloody fuck.

His eyes blazed with fury. “I said,” he snarls angrily, his voice cold. So cold my body freezes. “Don’t touch her.”

“Not that I needed your rescue Alpha Ryan,” Evie suddenly utters behind him. I glance at her over his shoulder and watch how he stiffens when her voice reaches his ears. “But I will say that your Beta helped your Luna escape-

“She’s not my Luna!” Alpha Ryan snarls into the air sharply and releases me, turning to her so quickly that she flinches back.” You are!” He roars.

Evie’s pov

My heart slammed against my ribcage the second those words left his mouth. I stare into his red glowing eyes, watch the way his bare chest rose as he took in sharp breaths.

His wolf had completely taken over.

‘Yummy,’ Serena purrs. ‘Him defending us is so hot,”

I nearly pinched the bridge of my nose in frustration at her. ‘Now is not the time Serena,’ I told her harshly. ‘He’s claiming us in front of his warriors!’

‘What’s wrong with that?’ She purrs.

‘You must’ve forgotten he rejected us before,’ I pointed out dryly before shutting her out.

She was giving me a headache.

“Alpha Ryan-

“Evie,” Gavin’s voice comes from behind me. I turn my attention over to him and notice he was giving Ryan a strange look. He was as bare as Ryan and the two seemed to have run back over here.

Whatever silent communication that passed between the two made Ryan divert the conversation quickly. “You said Beta Brett helped Kimberly escape?” He questions, eyes tearing from mine reluctantly.

I nod, brows furrowing as I wonder why he suddenly shifted the conversation like that…like he was deliberately pulling us away from what he just said. From claiming me.

My jaw tightened slightly but I pushed that aside. There were more important things right now. Like capturing Kimberly.

“Yes,” I answered, my voice steady as I crossed my arms over my chest. “He reeks of Hannah. It’s all over him. Not faint either… fresh.” I tilted my head slightly toward Brett, who was still on the ground, coughing up blood like the pathetic traitor he was. “I bet Hannah isn’t here right now.”

I watch Brett stiffen.

Ryan’s head snapped toward Brett so fast it nearly looked inhuman. Apex was still dangerously close to the surface. I could see it in the way his chest heaved and in the way his fingers twitched like he was seconds away from ripping someone apart. Even his claws are still drawn.

Brett froze when Apex stared him down. There was nowhere to go and now he had been cornered.

Fear looked better on him than that smug expression he wore earlier.

“That’s…not true,” Brett rasped, spitting blood to the side as he slowly pushed himself up onto his knees. His voice shook.” She’s lying. She’s trying to shift the blame. She hated Margaret and Kimberly. Everyone knows that. She attacked them in the kitchen earlier!”

“Oh, please,” I rolled my eyes. “If I wanted Margaret dead, I would’ve done it earlier. I wouldn’t have done it in your dungeon like some amateur.”

The guards that were slumped beside the dungeon entrance finally start to wake up. One groaned, eyes still closed, brows

pinched. “He gave us -Beta Brett-he gave us something to-

“Drink,” the other guard finished, coughing.

My eyebrows lift mockingly at Beta Brett as his face gets pale. “Like I said….sloppy.” I shook my head in disappointment.

Alpha Ryan roared as he gripped Brett’s neck and Brett gasped, hands lifting to claw at Ryan’s hold. But Ryan wasn’t going to let him get away. He’d not even make him take in a breath.

“Where are they?!” He snarls.
