Evie’s pov
My jaw tightened the second his words hit me and irritation flared hot in my chest as I stared at Gavin. For a second, I considered telling him exactly where he could shove that order because he knew that I didn’t want to be in Ryan’s presence any longer than necessary, but I bit my tongue instead.
He was my alpha and he just gave me an order whether I liked it or not.
“I’ll take care of the traitor here,” Gavin continues and looks at Ryan whose eyes had flickered to me when Gavin mentioned me going with him. “If you want to be able to catch Kimberly and Hannah quickly, your best chance is going with Evie. She’s the best tracker.”
‘Oh, we get to spend more time with Ryan,’ Serena purrs.
‘This isn’t a good thing,’ I growled at her.
‘Speak for yourself,’ Serena hummed, completely unbothered. I shut her out before she could say anything else.
Because right now, she was the last voice I needed in my head.
My gaze shifted reluctantly to Ryan as he lets Brett go reluctantly. “Fine,” he gritted out. “See to it that the council men punish him with death.”
Gavin nods. “Nothing less.”
Brett’s face pales even more, his eyes darting around for an escape. He hadn’t planned this out perfectly. There were too many cracks and holes in his plan. And now he was the one getting severely punished the most.
I looked at Gavin and nod. “Fine.” Agreeing to tag along with Ryan to hunt down Kimberly and Hannah. “Our chances of catching them before they reach rogue territory are pretty slim but if we leave now, there’s a chance we can,” I said over my shoulder.
I was already heading to the tree line when a voice came from behind me.
“Stay close,” Ryan said softly.
I scoffed lightly and rolled my eyes even though he probably couldn’t see it. “I don’t take instructions from you,” I shot back, glancing over my shoulder just long enough to meet his gaze.
Big mistake.
His eyes….still glowing faintly. Still so intense.
Still locked on me like I was something he cherished. It sent an unwanted shiver down my spine. I turned away quickly and swallowed the lump in my throat.
‘Oh, we like that look,’ Serena purred.
‘Shut up.’ I snapped.
Ryan let out a low chuckle and brushed past me, his arm brushing against me, I’d say deliberately. Tingles run through my body and I bit my bottom lip, hard. “Then keep up,” he teased, looking me over his shoulder before shifting into his beast.
His fur caught the light filtering through the trees. His muscles ripple beneath his fur as he turned his head slightly and those glowing eyes locked onto me again.
Waiting and….challenging. He was challenging me.
I narrowed my eyes. ‘We accept the challenge,’ Serena purred.

Ryan took off fast, looking behind him one last time before letting out a howl. It was like he was daring me to try and keep up.
A scoff left me as I shifted immediately, my own white wolf bursting free. Serena growled and then took off.
Wind tore past us as we surged forward, chasing after the large black wolf ahead. He was fast…. really fast but I wasn’t far behind. I wouldn’t dare lose to him. Not ever.
‘Race him,’ Serena urged, excitement bubbling in her tone. This wasn’t supposed to be a race; this was supposed to be a very important hunt.
‘We are not racing him.’ I snapped at her.
‘We’re absolutely racing him.’ She laughs, picking up her pace and pushing harder. And so did he.
Suddenly, I caught a whiff of Hannah and Kimberly’s scent. It was faint but I caught it. With a growl, I cut sharply to the right. Apex noticed and his head snapped slightly in my direction before he adjusted his path too.
We couldn’t communicate through mind link but at least he was smart enough to follow me.
We ran side by side now, our strides syncing unconsciously as we tore through the forest. Hannah and Kimberly’s scent was getting stronger the farther south we went.
I let but a growl and push myself harder. Apex does too, growling beside me. I could feel his eyes on me even though we were running through the woods.
Serena purred but I tried to keep my attention solely on the hunt and not him.
He hadn’t asked other warriors to join us and I assume he either had faith we could capture the two on our own or this was his way of wanting to get me alone with him.
Either way, I could not focus on any. Especially on him.
Minutes passed until we neared the border. The scent of the two shifted slightly and now mixed with something else.
Oil…. rubber…my eyes drop to the fresh tire marks.
I slowed my pace quickly and skidded to a stop near the edge of the clearing. Apex stopped beside me instantly.
My breathing is hasty as shifted back into my human form and do not bother to cover myself as I step forward, crouching low to examine the tire marks.
“They switched to the jeep here,” I muttered, brushing my fingers over the ground. “Not long ago either….maybe ten minutes. Fifteen at most.”
Kimberly and Hannah were fast…I’d give them that.
Behind me, I heard Ryan shift. His presence draws near and goosebumps rise on my skin. I try to ignore it.
“We can still catch them,” he said just beside me and I stiffen.
I straightened slowly, glancing ahead toward the road that led out of pack territory as I tried to ignore the tingles racing through me by his mere presence.
If we go further, we would be heading toward rogue land. Right towards trouble.
“You’re the alpha here, Ryan. Should we continue or do we stop now?” I questioned. If we enter rogue land we would be on our own. On their tuff. It was his call.
“Would you let your Luna escape or will you chase her down into rogue territory?” I turn to stare at him and watch his jaw clench hard.
I stiffen when he suddenly eats up the distance between us. “You must’ve not heard me earlier when I said she isn’t my Lama

Evie,” I hold my breath when his hand reaches up and cups my cheek tenderly. Holding me firmly there. “You are. You’ve always been,” his eyes are soft, peering into my soul.
My breath staggers and my heart skips a beat.
