Evie’s pov

I stepped back from the edge and shifted, my bones cracking and reforming until I stood in my human form again. The wind bit against my bare skin instantly and it carried the salt of the ocean lightly on my skin as the waves hit the huge rocks.
Behind me, I heard the same ripple of movement as Ryan shifted back into his human form too. The sound of his bones snapping into place echoed softly behind me and followed by a sharp inhale. He stepped up beside me, close, way too close but for once I didn’t snap at him to move away.
‘His scent,’ Serena purred and I rolled my eyes. Of course, she was purring when we had other important stuff to worry about. Like Hannah and Kimberly and if they were still alive.
‘Stop it Serena,’ I whisper but stiffen when Ryan’s arm brushes against mine, which causes the little hairs on my arm to rise.
I jerked my arm away slight but it was more out of reflex than anything else. My jaw clenches in frustration.
Focus. We need to focus Evie. I reminded myself even though my wolf was anything but focused.
I forced my attention back to the cliff, to the crashing waves below, to the emptiness where the vehicle had been swallowed instantly by the ocean. “There’s no way they’d survive this,” I breathed out as I wait for any signs of the two. But nothing. Except for the crashes of the waves on the rocks.
The waves crashed harder against the rocks below, spraying mist into the air, but there was still nothing. No movement, no scent and no….bodies. They must be truly gone.
“The disconnect from her had begun the moment I entered you earlier,” Ryan suddenly uttered, making my heart skip a beat.” Our fake bond started deteriorating the second I accepted you as my mate,” I could feel his eyes intensely on my face and goosebumps dotted across my skin instantly.
I can’t resist and my eyes flicker to him. He’s already staring at me intensely. So intensely that the look set fire on my skin. “I can’t tell if she’s dead or alive because our fake bond has shattered. I can’t sense Hannah either because she left the pack on her own, also destroying the connection she had to the pack.”
I took in a sharp inhale and tore my eyes away to stare at the ocean down below. Still no signs of them.
“She must’ve felt the pain earlier when we,” I closed my eyes for a brief second and let the wind brush against my face.” Because I felt it too that night,” I remove the emotions from my eyes as I spare him a glance.
He’s still staring at me but now his brows are furrowed until his eyes flicker with realization. His expression shifted into guilt.
My jaw tightened as I looked away again, refusing to let whatever was building in my chest show on my face. “Yeah,” I said flatly. “Perhaps that’s why she had so much rage enough to kill her own mother.”
Silence stretched between us for a bit before Ryan finally uttered. “Nothing will justify Kimberly killing her mother,” his words made me turn to him once more and his eyes soften.” But I will say Evie, that night I only marked her,” his eyes peered into mine deeply. “I never slept with her. Not even when
A sudden sound coming from the woods made him stiffen and stop his words. His head tilted slightly, eyes narrowing toward the forest behind us and I could see Apex shift behind those eyes.
Serena surged forward inside me, her earlier distractions gone like they never even existed. ‘We’re not alone,’ she growled low.
Ryan stilled beside me and I stiffen as I forced my breathing to slow and let my senses stretch outward, reaching past the crash of the waves and past the wind whipping against my skin.
And then that’s when I heard it. A faint snap, then another but this one was louder.
My attention dragged from the ocean to the forest behind us and I scanned the shadows between the trees.

My muscles tightened, every inch of me locking into place as Serena’s presence pressed forward eagerly when we saw the flicker of movement between the trees. ‘Let me out.’
“Ryan,” I said tightly and he moves closer to me, almost a few inches before me as if protecting me. ” Rogues,” he grumbled
under his breath.
My eyes flicked to him for a second before returning to the rogues. I am tempted to tell him that he didn’t have to protect me and I can handle myself but something tells me that this wasn’t the time.
A low whistle cut through the air, sharp and mocking. “Well…..this is unexpected. Didn’t think we would get visitors at this time
of night.”
A man stepped out from the shadows slowly, his boots crunching against ground as his eyes dragged over us, lips tilting into a cruel, hungry smirk. But he wasn’t the only one. More followed, from the left and from the right. Even from above the trees, some hopped off to hit the ground on their feet.
We had been so focused on the chase to get Kimberly and Hannah that we hadn’t even sensed the rogues. They must have seen everything and they were waiting for the right time to make their presence known.
We were on their turf. Which means….this could be war.
Rogues didn’t take heed of council laws so going into their territory without warning can cause quite a stir.
I scanned over them; there were many. Perhaps more than twenty.
“Pack wolves,” One of them muttered, sniffing the air with a wide smirk on his dirty, ugly face. I glared at him. “Fresh off their territory too,” he mocked, tilting his head as he studied us.
Another chuckled and stepped closer to the left. “And an alpha…didn’t expect that,” His gaze slid to me next and he scan my body slowly. His smirk widened and his tongue darted out of his mouth to lick his lips. “And a very sexy female.”
Ryan stiffened in front of me.” Keep your fucking eyes off her!” He growled loudly, his command rolling off in the air.
Most of the rogues hesitated as his command rocks through the air but the leader stepped forward instead, smirking like he was amused. And then he laughed, throwing his head back as the sharp sound challenged the sound of the waves behind us.
And just as quickly as he started laughing, he abruptly stopped, his head straightening as he peered at Ryan coldly. “You’re not on your land, Alpha,” he said, tilting his head. “That doesn’t work here.”
As if their leader’s arrogance egged on their own bravery, the rest of the rogues stepped forward. Gravel crunched beneath their boots as they tightened the circle, taking their time as if they were savoring this.
There were too many of them to take head on without getting sloppy. But we would still be able to fight them off.
‘We’ve handled far worse,’ Serena murmured, her voice low and eager now as if she couldn’t wait to get her claws dirty. ‘Let me
out Evie.’
‘Not yet,’ I warned. ‘We don’t rush. Especially without Ryan’s word.”
“We don’t want trouble,” Ryan said tightly. “We were hunting down two prisoners and they happened to have passed through rogue territory. This doesn’t have to escalate and we can come to an agreement without a fight.”
The leader remained quiet and then hummed as if he was thinking about Ryan’s suggestion but then his eyes flicker to me and a smirk drew back on his face. This time, it makes an uncomfortable tingle race down my spine.
