Evie’s pov

Ryan kicked the leader of the rogues’ limp body forward. The action caused him to fall a few feet away from his pack.

“I’d suggest you pick him up and leave.” Ryan sneered under his breath.

Two of the rogues rushed forward and grabbed their leader quickly…almost carefully, like they were afraid even touching him wrong would somehow set Ryan off again.

Their movements were nothing like the cocky predators they had been just minutes ago. They were humiliated on their own turf.

One of them dared a glance up at Ryan, his eyes filled with something close to fear but tried to hide it away quickly. But we’ve already seen it. “We will walk away but you two have an hour to leave our territory.”

A threat that held no weight. Especially when their leader was down.

Ryan didn’t even look impressed. He just took a step forward and growled out. “You don’t get to give us terms.”

The rogue who had spoken swallowed hard and looked away quickly at the others for help. But they only shook their heads, silently telling him to shut up. His grip tightening on their unconscious leader and I could hear his heartbeat spike from where I stood.

Ryan’s eyes flickered over them and then he snarled. “Move.”

The way the rogues retreated quickly was almost amusing. In seconds, most had disappeared into the trees, dragging their leader with them.

The second I sensed we were alone, I breathed out a sigh. “Looks like you’ve earned yourself some enemies.” I pointed out. “1 wouldn’t be surprised if they regroup and try to attack the pack later on.”

Ryan lifted his shoulder barely into a shrug. “I beat their leader in seconds. I don’t think they can ever beat me even with an

army.”

I raised a brow at his still tensed back and stepped forward and around him but his hand shot out to stop me. His arm slammed on my breasts. Directly on my nipples.

They bud instantly.

Fuck.

‘Serena calm down.’ I snapped in my head.

“This is all you Evie,’ she giggled.

Irritation flares inside my chest.

I slapped his arm away instantly, stepping back like I’d been burned. “Watch it!” My tone had a lot of bite into it.

Ryan’s head snapped to face me and his lips twitched into a playful smirk. “I was just making sure they were really gone.” his eyes dip to stare at my breasts and my face flamed hot.

His tongue darts out and the tip rolled over his bottom lip as a flash of hunger swirled in his eyes. “Eyes up here!” I gritted out, pointing my finger at my face.

Ryan didn’t even look ashamed that he got caught. If anything, that smirk of his deepened and made something as close to fire settle low in my stomach.

“Kind of hard to not stare at my mate’s-

“Stop!” I snapped before he could finish those words. “Stop saying that word! Not because you have rejected the fake bond

between you and Kimberly means I will accept the bond between you and me again! I am not your mate!”

My words made him flinch and he looked like he had been hurt. For a second I nearly felt bad but then a flash of that night pushed into my mind and I buried any softness I felt.

Ryan’s jaw tightened, his gaze dropping for a brief moment before lifting back to mine. The way he looked like something inside him actually broke made my heart hurt.

‘You’ve hurt him,’ Serena said softly.

‘Not as much as he has hurt me.’ I whispered back.

“We should get going to the pack now,” he utters, tearing his gaze away like he wasn’t sure if he was allowed to look at me

anymore.

“They left but we can’t take chances with rogues,” he says, looking back at the ocean. “Kimberly and Hannah are as good as dead. There’s no point in staying here.”

I nod, not uttering a word because I wasn’t sure how to cut the tension now. It was very clear that I had hurt him but taking it back now would make me look weak.

I stepped around him and was about to shift into my wolf when his arm shot out again and grabbed the bone of my wrist. Instant sparks danced across my skin and I took in a sharp inhale. The bond was growing once more.

“You can’t say you don’t feel this Evie,” Ryan said, voice now thick with so many emotions it made my chest tighten. “You can’t deny the feeling. No matter how hard you try to ignore it….” He tugs me towards him and the sudden movement catches me off guard when I fall into his arms.

I gasped, but he held me there. I can fight him off. I can tell him to fuck off. But I don’t. Because a part of me wants him too.

“We were meant to be Evie,” he whispered. “I know I screwed up by choosing her but you had no idea that, that night when I found out you were my mate, I was going to choose you. Despite the fucking prophecy. You were going to be mine. You have no idea how much I loved you then and do now. I remember everything Evie,” his eyes pressed tightly shut as if he was pushed back into the memories of that night too.

When his eyes peel open again, they clash with mine and pin me there. “Let me tell you the truth,” his voice breaks. “Please.”

“Why should I even listen to what you have to say Ryan?” My voice cracked, and I hated it.

“Because you deserve to know the truth Evie,” he said. “Even if you hate me after.”

And as I stare into his eyes and watch how the emotions play in their depths, for the first time since seeing him after three years….I want to listen to him.

But then those eyes fogged and Ryan tensed once more. He was getting mind linked and by the way his jawline strained and popped, he wasn’t receiving good news.

When his eyes returned to their original color, they were emotionless. “I just got word from one of my pack warriors. My mother and father drank silver before the council men got here. They’re actively dying.”

Kimberly’s pov

I coughed out the salt water that filled my lungs, gasping for air as my fingers grip the slimy rocks. My nails scraping against the rock as another wave crashed nearby and soaks me all over again.

Fuck. I hadn’t planned for that kind of escape but that was the only way.

Hannah is struggling to grip the rocks to steady herself, her breathing harsh as she looked over at me like I was crazy. Maybe I

They were talking to someone but I couldn’t pick up what the other person was saying.
