Evie’s pov

Atlas blinked up at me as if he was confused, trying to wrap his mind around what I had just said. His little face scrunched in confusion, his little brain obviously working up a storm. ” Really my daddy?” his soft voice is confused.
My chest tightened and I swallowed. I nod. “He’s really your daddy,” I whispered, my voice firmer than it had been a few seconds ago.
He turned back to Ryan slowly and then really looked at him, his little brows still scrunched in confusion. “You’re my real daddy? “Atlas asked, his voice a bit unsure if he was saying it right.
His eyes were locked on Atlas, eyes foggy with tears as I watched his Adam’s apple bob when he swallowed. His lips parted but no words came out at first. He cleared his throat once and then another before finally…words moved out his mouth.
“Yes,” he said hoarsely, nodding, tears now moving down his cheek. “Yeah, I am.”
“But….” Atlas hesitated and then glances back at me for a second before looking at Ryan again. His brows are pulled into a tighter furrow. “But mommy said you abandoned us?”
The whispers that had quieted before began again but a lot louder this time. His pack members started to murmur into the air.
“Did she just say this was the alpha’s son?” One whispered, shock swimming in his voice.
“She did. He looks like him and smells like him. That’s the alpha’s son….” a girl gasped in wonder.
“How could this be possible? Did she have an affair with the alpha under Kimberly’s nose?” Another girl spat.
“No wonder he humiliated our dear Luna for her sake! She’s a homewrecker.” A guy grumbles under his breath but I caught it. His words made me stiffen.
“She must’ve tricked the alpha into sleeping with her. There’s no way he would’ve slept with her willingly.” A woman sneered
low.
I mustn’t have been the only one to catch their bitter words because a loud booming voice shocks the air. “Silence,” Ryan orders. That one word struck the air like rumbling thunder and caused every single warrior to snap their mouths shut instantly.
Ryan slowly rises to his full height and he moves his body to stand between Atlas and the rest of them protectively. He was shielding his son from the weight of their stares.
That action made both Serena and me swoon.
His eyes swept over his warriors, cold and angry now as he lost the vulnerability from seconds ago. “Training is over,” he said coldly and the warriors flinched back. “Leave,” Ryan added, his voice dropping into a warning tone that made a shiver of pleasure tingle down my spine. “Now.”
‘Him in commanding mode is so hot,’ Serena purred, practically in heat.
They didn’t need to be told twice. They quickly spun around and walked away. Lisa looked at me and I nod, telling her that it was okay and that she could leave too. Quincy gave me a soft reassuring smile and came forward to squeeze my shoulder before turning around and leaving as well.
Now it was just the three of us on the training field. Me, Atlas and Ryan.
Atlas, however, wasn’t paying attention to what was going on around him and fisted his little hands on his dad’s pants and then tugged to get his attention.
Ryan turns back around and the coldness that had been in his eyes when he regarded his pack warriors is quickly replaced by warmth when he stares down at his son.

“You didn’t answer me,” he said, his little voice serious in a way that almost made me smile despite what was currently happening. “Mommy said you abandoned us.”
“1-“I looked at Ryan apologetically. “I-
“I didn’t abandon you,” Ryan said, his voice tearing as he stares down at his son in admiration and pain. Pain that he lost time with him. Pain that his son thought he had abandoned him because that’s what I said. “I didn’t know your mommy had you,”
He kneels in front of his son, eyes looking at him intently. “If I had known, I would’ve never left you or your mommy.”
He looks at me over his shoulder for a quick second before returning his gaze to his son. “But I know your mommy had a good reason to tell you that. She was protecting you. And maybe she was protecting herself too.”
I cast my gaze down to the ground, my heart melting the little ice I had left for him. His understanding and how softly he spoke to Atlas made me realize….he was still the same Ryan I grew up with. The one who took care of me. The one I trusted fully.
The one I loved.
Atlas looked between us a little confused, his face scrunched up adorably as he questioned. “You didn’t know about me?”
Ryan shook his head immediately, fingers twitching as if he wanted to hold his son in his arms. “No, Atlas. I didn’t know,” His voice cracked slightly and he didn’t even try to hide it. “But if I did? I swear to you….I would’ve come for you. I would move the heavens and earth if I had to get to you. I would get to you.”
Atlas stared at him for a long moment, his little face searching Ryan’s like he was trying to decide if to trust his word. Atlas was always good at judging someone’s character so I knew he’d warm up to Ryan soon enough.
However, I hadn’t expected so soon, especially when he surprised us both when he slowly lifted his arms up and then he stepped forward, wrapping them around Ryan’s neck.
My heart pounds and I smile tearily. Ryan went rigid the second Atlas’s small arms wrapped around his neck. It was like his body didn’t know how to process what was happening. As though he was scared to even breathe in case this was all a dream.
But it isn’t a dream and he realizes that because he broke. His shoulders shook as he cried, his arms coming around Atlas much smaller frame to hold him gently. But then he tightens his grip just a little, like he couldn’t get close enough.
His face buried into Atlas’s curls. “I won’t go anywhere,” he broke down and my heart hurts. “I’m here now. I’m here now son.”
“Your heart is beating so fast,” Atlas said in shock.
Ryan lets out a faint chuckle, squeezing him a little. Then Atlas looks back at me, still in his father’s hold and calls out to me.” Mommy?”
“Yes, baby?” I breathed. I wasn’t far from them, just a couple of inches.
His little hand lifted, reaching out toward me and my heart stutters. “Come here.”
He was calling me into the hug between him and his dad. “1 “Thesitated, not wanting to ruin the moment between father and son. Ryan needed this.
Atlas frowned a little. “Mommy…”
