Evie’s pov

I had just gotten out of the shower and had been putting on my clothes when I heard Quincy and Gavin’s hushed voices down the hall. I knew they were having a private conversation. However, I caught Ryan and Atlas’s names being mentioned and it caught my attention. 17

I hadn’t meant to listen, I honestly hadn’t. But the moment their names slipped through the crack of the door, something made me pay attention.

“Would you have ever told her about that night he called, searching for her whereabouts?” Quincy said in a quiet voice.

“She’d hate me if she found out,” Gavin grumbles under his breath. “Especially now that we know the truth. It hadn’t been his fault. His parents…” Gavin lets out an irritated sigh. “They screwed up everything.”

I throw on a light blue t-shirt and stepped out of the room slowly, still paying attention to their conversation. Atlas and Ryan were in the kitchen where I left them. Apparently our son was hungry and Ryan could whip up a mean chicken sandwich.

“Exactly. They were the reason you thought Ryan meant harm to Evie,” Quincy sighed. “She’d understand Gavin. You should’ve told her everything.”

My heart skips and I looked down the hall where their hushed voices were coming from. Had Gavin not told me everything? My steps slowed to a stop.

Before I could think about it, my legs move me to the room. I hadn’t seen Gavin from morning and it was clear he had been avoiding me. He was most likely beating himself up about last night.

I opened the door without knocking and the conversation the two were having, ceased as they turn to face me.

Gavin froze where he stood, his shoulders going stiff the second his eyes landed on me. Quincy’s expression softened but she has that cautious flicker in her eyes. “How much have you heard?” Gavin sighed, running a hand through his hair as I closed the

door.

I folded my arms over my chest and leaned my back against the door. I was still angry at him for spilling about Atlas; however, I knew that there was a possibility that I would’ve never told Ryan about him….if it weren’t for Gavin.

And today wouldn’t have happened. I wouldn’t have gotten to see how much in awe Ryan was in when his eyes caught his son for the first time.

“Enough to know you haven’t told me everything,” I shrugged and Quincy looked over at him, urging him with her eyes to tell me everything.

Gavin looks at me for a bit and seeming to contemplate before he lets out a breath and utters. “A couple of nights after you got to the pack territory, Ryan called,”

My heart stutters. Ryan had called?

“He was in search of you and questioned if you had by any chance stumbled on Midnight Ridge territory,” He looked away, his eyes casting down to the floor in shame and regret. “I lied and told him I haven’t seen you because I thought they wanted to hurt you more.”

“He was searching for me?” I whispered, my throat tightening.

Gavin nodded, still not meeting my eyes. “Yeah.”

I swallowed. “You should’ve told me then Gavin. It concerned me, I should’ve known about it.”

“I thought I was protecting you,” Gavin said quickly, lifting his head. “Evie, you have to understand…..I hadn’t known his parents were cruel enough to play with a sacred bond. I thought it was his choice to reject you. I thought if he found you, they’d find you. And if they found you…..” He trailed off, jaw tightening.

“They would’ve killed me,” I finished for him. I recall Ryker telling him to get rid of me that day I stumbled on his territory. So of course, he’d be cautious. I couldn’t blame him. I couldn’t hold anger towards him for that.

‘We spent years believing Ryan hadn’t cared,’ Serena murmurs. ‘All along he did care and he wanted us back.’

“I found out about his parents’ manipulation last night at the council,” Gavin confessed. ” Ryan told the council everything and I was a witness to it.” Gavin stares at me softly. “You don’t have to forgive me Evie, but…..forgive him. I may not like the guy all the time but he deserves this happiness. He deserves his family.”

My heart pounds in my chest and Quincy looked between the two of us but she doesn’t interrupt. I could tell Gavin wanted to say more and he did.” And that’s why I have come to a decision to let you go as the Midnight Ridge pack warrior.”

My breath hitched and I looked at him wide eyed as my heart slammed hard on my ribcage. “Wh-a-at?” I stammered over my words in disbelief. I must’ve heard him wrongly. There was no way he had just let me go of the duty I worked so hard for.

“You’re joking ri-ght?” I gulped, looking between him and Quincy in slight panic. “Gavin, you know I’ve worked hard for that position. You know-

“I know,” He interrupts with a proud smile and walks over to me. He stops just a few inches from me. I crane my neck to look up at him, my vision blurring.

“Then why?” I croaked out and his smile shook.

“I’m not releasing you from your duties as a Midnight Ridge warrior because you aren’t capable of leading the warriors. We all know you can without a doubt,” he drew in a breath. “I’m releasing you because that life you built in the pack….it has now changed from last night.”

My heart skipped painfully and my throat tightened.

“What are you saying Gavin?” I whispered as a tear slipped from my eye. He lifted his hand and hovered it over my head. And then he plants it on my head tenderly like a brother would do.

“He’s your mate,” Gavin utters with a fond smile. “And now we know the truth. He didn’t try to kill you, nor did he reject you willingly. Everything that kept you two apart…. wasn’t your fault or his.”

I swallowed hard as my pulse raced.
