Evie’s pov

I stiffened and Ryan’s teasing expression disappeared instantly. Serena snarled low in my head. ‘What the hell is Kwan up to?’

Kwan had always been teasing towards me but never so boldly before. He has never kissed me on my cheek before.

Atlas looked at Kwan innocently. He clearly couldn’t sense the tension in the room. “Hi uncle Kwan!”

Kwan chuckled as he slung his arm over my shoulder. Ryan’s eyes burn on Kwan’s arm on my shoulder and his jaw pops. I can see it. The fury swimming in those dark eyes. Gosh, I can see Apex move through those eyes. He was stirring awake.

Kwan clearly couldn’t read the room or didn’t care at all. “Hi there champ. What are you making?”

Atlas, thankfully oblivious to the dangerous tension weighing heavily in the kitchen, proudly puffed out his chest. “We’re making chicken sandwiches!”

‘Kwan,’ I snarl through the mind link and shifted away from him until his arms drop.

‘Relax. I’m just testing the big bad alpha,’ Kwan snorted and laughed as he looked over at Ryan who stood really still by the stove, one hand tightening around the huge spoon hard enough that I was genuinely concerned it might snap in half. His broad shoulders were tense and rigid, his chest rising and falling hard.

I don’t think it was a good idea for Kwan to test him right now.

‘I don’t think you should do that. Gavin learnt the hard way,’ I grumble.

‘What do you mean by that?’ Kwan asked, sounding very interested to know more.

‘I mean, they fought,’ I replied.

‘Oh? Who won?’ Kwan laughed, clearly not taking heed to my warning.

‘None,’ I grumbled.

‘Damn, bummer,’ Kwan snorted.

Kwan grinned at Atlas, purposely ignoring Ryan. “Hmm making chicken sandwiches you say? Is your dad a good cook bud?”

I rolled my eyes and walked more into the kitchen and planted myself on one of the stools around the kitchen island. Of course, Kwan follows and leans on the countertop way too close to me.

Ryan’s jaw popped as he glared at Kwan.

‘Oh he hates seeing another male get close to us.’ Serena purred.

‘Stop enjoying this,’ I grumble at her.

‘No,’ Seren replied smugly.

Atlas, who was still very oblivious to what was going on, shook his head. “Nope,”

I slapped a hand over my mouth to stop the laugh threatening to burst out when Atlas popped the P. Ryan looked deeply betrayed by his son.

“Wow,” Ryan muttered dryly, fake glaring down at his son. “First you spill to your mom about the bread and pan and now this?”

Atlas shrugged. “The bread was very dead. So black.”

I couldn’t hold it in anymore and started to giggle loudly. Kwan barked out a laugh and even Ryan let out a faint chuckle The tension eased…slightly. Just slightly.

But of course, Kwan wanted to get on Ryan’s nerves. He smirked and leaned casually against the counter, way too close to me I glared at the side of his face harshly but Kwan ignored me. “Well, if you ever want actual cooking lessons champ, I can teach you.”

The spoon bends in Ryan’s hold.

My stomach flipped but it was far from fear. It was from…yearning.

“That was so hot,’ Serena swooned and I couldn’t help but agree.

Serena practically melted into a puddle. ‘We love a protective, jealous alpha. So hot. Just want to lick him.’

‘You need help,’ I snorted at her.

‘We both do,’ She retorted and I kept shut because well….we both were drooling.

Atlas’s brow furrowed as he stared at Kwan confused.” But you’re no better uncle Kwan. You burnt the eggs the last time,” He pointed out and I snorted out a laugh.

Kwan gasped dramatically and pointed at Atlas like he’d just been betrayed in the worst way possible. “You little snitch.”

Atlas giggled loudly and pointed at Kwan. “Mommy, he said bad words too.”

I burst into laughter while Kwan clutched his chest in fake heartbreak. “Damn Atlas, you’re a savage,” Kwan complains, his eyes narrowing on Atlas.” But the eggs were still better than your dad’s cooking.”

Atlas shook his head. “Sorry uncle Kwan but Daddy chicken tastes better.”

Ryan straightened smugly at that and folds his arms over his broad chest as he gives Kwan a cocky look.

Kwan scoffs. “The kid clearly has no taste buds yet or he would’ve chosen my eggs.”

“Nope,” Atlas spoke. ” Your food is horrible uncle Kwan. Everyone said it and they got bellyaches afterwards!”

Ryan finally lost whatever battle he was fighting not to smile and a rough laugh escaped him as he set the poor bent spoon down on the counter. He looked at Atlas in awe of his wit and bluntness.
