Evie’s pov

I nearly choked on my sandwich.

In his room? He wanted Atlas and me in his room?

‘Oh more time with Mr Handsome…’ Serena swoons.

‘No,’ I snapped at her. “This is moving too quickly and the Silver Blood pack will have lots to say about it. They won’t like this.”

Though I wanted to try this out with Ryan, his pack and people would frown upon this. Especially seeing as they were blaming me for tearing their Luna and Alpha apart. And now I’ve brought in his son, whom he had no idea about until last night.

If I moved into Ryan’s room….the whispers would get worse. The hate would get worse.

‘Let them whisper,’ Serena growled instantly. ‘We’re his mate. If he wants us in his room then we go to his room.’

“That doesn’t mean the pack will accept us and if we go to his room right after his Luna escaped, they’d be reluctant to accept us when it’s time.’

Serena quieted slightly at that because deep down, we both knew it was true.

“That won’t be a good idea Ryan,” I said, tightening my hold on Atlas. I can see the way Ryan’s expression drops and he looks saddened. “I am part of the Midnight Ridge pack,” I looked away from him.” My place is with them.”

The words tasted wrong coming out of my mouth because a part of me wanted to say yes.

A reckless, aching part of me wanted to walk into Ryan’s room with Atlas in my arms and pretend we were already the family fate had meant us to be from the start.

But reality wasn’t that simple. It had never been that simple.

Ryan’s face fell slowly and the look made me almost regret my words. It’s quiet for a bit, I’d go as far as say it was awkward. Little Atlas didn’t understand the tension yet.

“Evie,” Ryan voice calls out after an awkward pause.

“Hmm?” I looked up at him, afraid to see how disappointed he was by my words.

“Don’t you think your place would be beside your mate?” his voice is low….cautious. As if he was afraid I’d snap and he’d lose everything.

“1-

I looked away, unsure of how to respond because I know he was right but I also knew moving too fast would cause a rift within the pack. We couldn’t risk that.

“I don’t want your people to think I’m replacing Kimberly before the dust even settles,” I admitted quietly.

Ryan’s jaw ticked as he clenched it. “You’re not replacing anyone. You’re taking back the spot that was rightfully meant for you. It’s your spot. You’re my true Luna. It was never her and would’ve never been her.”

His dark eyes locked onto mine intensely and a shiver moves down my spine. “Kimberly was chosen by my parents,” he continued, his voice growing firmer. “You were chosen by the moon goddess.”

Serena completely melted. ‘Say yes. Gosh Evie, let’s say yes.’

‘Serena…..’

‘Did you not hear this man?!’ She swooned. ‘How can you not say yes to him?’

She’s right. I was finding it difficult to say no to Ryan.

I pressed my lips together tightly as I tried to ignore the warmth spreading through my chest. I couldn’t cave in so easily.

I looked down quickly as I tried to gather my thoughts. “Ryan, it’s not as easy as you make it seem.”

“Why not?” he asked with a disappointed sigh.

“Because your pack just watched Kimberly run away after killing her own mother,” I whispered harshly. “Despite it not being me who caused it, they still blame me. If I suddenly move into your room after one day-”

“You think I care more about gossip than having my mate and son close to me?” He cuts in. “Evie…..you have no idea what I’d do to get a chance with you again,” His expression is serious and there’s no amusement in his gaze. “I would step down as alpha if I get to have you and my son. That is what I should’ve done a long time ago.”

My breath caught at his words and the walls of the kitchen suddenly feel like they were closing in.

Step down as alpha?

I stared at him in shock while Atlas happily munched on his sandwich between us, completely unaware that his father had just shaken the ground beneath my feet.

“Ryan….” I whispered weakly.

But Ryan only held my gaze with terrifying honesty. There was no hesitation there. No uncertainty. He meant every single word. “I failed you once because I let everyone else decide my life for me,” He said quietly. “My parents….the damn pack,” His jaw tightened harshly. “I’m not doing it again.”

Serena was an emotional mess inside me. ‘This man was perfect.’

‘He’s always been,’ I admitted to her softly as I stared at Ryan.

I swallowed hard. “You can’t just throw away your pack Ryan.”

His eyes softened instantly. “I’m not throwing them away,” His gaze flickered to Atlas before returning to me. “But I’m done sacrificing the people I love for them.”

Atlas blinked between us slowly, little brows furrowing as he sensed the shift in air. “Daddy sad?”

Ryan’s entire expression softened immediately at our son’s voice. “No soh,” he murmured gently, reaching over to playfully run his hands through his hair. “Daddy feels happy that you’re here.”

Atlas grins happily and takes a huge bite of his sandwich. Despite the conversation me and his dad were having, he always knows how to make me smile. My chest ached when I caught Ryan’s eyes.

He was staring at both Atlas and me in admiration.

I can’t believe he’d step down for for me. For us.

Ryan leaned back slightly in his chair, his eyes still locked entirely on me. “I’m not asking you to let me mark you tomorrow, Evie,” He said more quietly now. “I know I hurt you in the past with my awful decisions. I know I don’t deserve instant forgiveness.”

My throat tightened and I swallow hard.

“But I want the chance to have you near,” He continued. “To wake up and see you there. To hear Atlas running around my room making a mess.” A faint smile tugged at his lips. “I want the life I should’ve had with you.” There was raw yearning in his voice.

I looked away quickly because if I kept staring at him, I might actually say yes and that….. terrified me.
