Evie’s pov
*Present time*
The sudden burst of warmth on my skin stirs me awake. I peel my eyes open slowly, wincing as I adjust them to
the light.
It’s now morning, or perhaps afternoon,
I am still on the forest ground, my cheeks pressed to the damp leaves, my hair tangle with a few tiny twigs. I was now fully back human. Around me the forest is lush, green and beautiful. But I knew the danger it held.
Especially now that I have newly shifted into a white wolf.
I groan, shifting to lift up my head. It seems I had blacked out after I let my wolf take over to lead us through the forest. I can’t recall anything after giving her the reigns.
1 shift again and let out a silent groan. My body feels heavy and sore which makes sense recalling the events from last night.
Last night.
I sucked in a breath.
Right.
It wasn’t just a terrible dream. Ryan had not only rejected me last night after I gave myself to him but also sent out the warriors of the pack to hunt me down and kill me.
I wasn’t sure why Javon let me free even though he and the other wolves had many opportunities to kill me. So why didn’t he?
My brows furrowed as I get swooped into my thoughts. However the sudden sound of voices made my ears perk and my heart to slam against my ribcage.
I scramble to sit up, ignoring the pain I felt by doing so and also ignoring that I was completely naked and covered in dirt and dried leaves.
‘Easy,’ my wolf Serena murmurs calmly. ‘Your body is still adjusting to the shift,
Though her voice steadies me it doesn’t ease my panic. I was alone, on an alphas territory and there were wolves heading this way.
The voices grow louder, getting closer. “The scent is strongest here,
“The howl was loud,” one utters.
“A lone wolf,” another spoke up, sounding more powerful than the other. “No lone wolf crosses our borders unless they desperately want to die.”
My breath hitches and I use all the power I have left to scramble to my feet. My knees wobble beneath me but I ignore it as heat blooms on my face when I realize just how bare 1 am.
Perfect. I grimaced as my hands fly to my body to somewhat hide my nakedness.
There are leaves that aren’t supposed to be in such places…..

I stagger toward a fallen log and crouch behind it, my face hot with both fear and embarrassment. My heart is hammering so loudly I am sure they can hear it.
‘They already know you’re here,’ Serena says gently. “They’re skilled wolves. Stronger than those back home.”
My heart skips. Stronger than those back home? Those back home were really strong…..
That’s rather comforting……I thought sarcastically.
Footsteps crunch closer and my heart jumps in my throat. If I try to run away now, they’d most likely catch me.
‘Are we to fight them?” I asked Serena as they draw closer.
‘We can’t,’ she responds calmly. She is way too calm.
I am on another alpha territory without his permission. I don’t think they’d let me go freely. Not when the alpha is Gavin Santros of the Midnight Ridge pack.
As my thoughts consume me I didn’t hear when they were now just breaths away from me. I swallow hard as the footsteps stop just before the log. My heart races in my chest, quick and uneven.
Silence stretches and my hands tremble as sweat bead on my skin.
Then a voice speaks, calm and commanding. Too calm. “Come out. No point in hiding anymore.”
My blood turns to ice. His voice hadn’t been loud or aggressive. It didn’t need to be. There was an authority in that single command that pressed down on my chest, that squeezed all the air out of my lungs. Whoever spoke had a very high position in this pack.
‘Do not run,’ Serena says firmly. “They will take it as a challenge. One you are not ready for.’
“Then what do we do?’I asked as panic claw at my thoughts.
‘We stand,’ she answers gently. ‘And we survive.’
A shadow falls over the ground in front of me and my body trembles. I flinch as a large hand grips the edge of the log and in one smooth push it is shoved aside like it weighs absolutely nothing.
I gasp as my eyes clash with theirs. They’re right there. Four of them. All men. All huge and towering. All wolves.
They’re half shifted, eyes glowing faintly, canines sharp, power rolling off them in waves that make my skin prickle with anxiety. One of them inhales deeply, his gaze snapping straight to me.
“Definitely newly shifted,” he rumbles. “The scent of a pack is still on her,” he tilts his head as he studies me.
Another clicks his tongue softly. “So what is she doing here in our woods? Must’ve been running or kicked out,” he eyes me, his eyes narrowing. “Or a criminal.”
My humiliation burns hotter than my fear as I curl in on myself instinctively, arms wrapped around my chest, What am I even supposed to say to them?
The one who spoke first steps forward. He’s taller than the rest, dark-haired, his expression unreadable but sharp. Very powerful energy. His power reminds me of my dad’s yet his is somewhat stronger despite him only looking to be a few years older than me. He must be a beta.
I flinch away, unsure if to listen to Serena and stay or run away.
“Easy,” he says. His voice is not unkind but not gentle either. “We won’t kill you yet.”
