Evie’s pov

The room goes quiet completely. Plates pause mid air with some of the women’s eyes widening. One of the women near the stove shoots the girl a stunned look and Quincy’s bright grin vanishes instantly.

My grip tightens around my fork, my knuckles whitening as my fingers tremble,

Quincy straightens in her seat, eyes sharpening as she turns toward the pretty girl. “Lisa, careful with your words, “she says coolly. “That ‘stray’ is my brother’s guest. One he has now welcomed in the pack.”

The girl, Lisa, scoffs while adjusting the strap of her bag as she walks further into the room. “Since when does Gavin take in outsiders? Especially ones from rival packs,” Her gaze slides back to me, dangerously irritated. ” Heard she’s weak. An embarrassment. Not even her mate wanted her.”

The familiar sting crawls up my spine. I lower my eyes to my plate, my appetite suddenly gone. For someone who was so pretty, her attitude was nasty.

“Lisa!” Quincy abruptly stands from the chair. Her sudden move made the legs of the chair scrap against the tiles. “That’s enough!”

Lisa only lifts an unimpressed brow, her lips curling into a slow mocking smile. “What?” she shrugs lightly. “Am I wrong?”

My chest tightens painfully at her words. Not even her mate wanted her. Those words replay in my head like a knife dragging across my flesh. Brutal and taunting. Serena stirs restlessly, hating to be reminded of Ryan backstabbing us.

Quincy walks behind me to step fully in front of me, her body forming a shield before me without hesitation.” You know nothing about Evie Lisa!” she snaps. “And you are crossing the line.”

Lisa lets out a soft laugh, one that sounds hollow. “Please. Everyone knows what happened. Rejected. Hunted by her own pack because her mate called for her death after he casted her aside like the trash she is.” Her eyes flick over Quincy’s shoulder to me. “Our pack will get tainted because of her.”

The words hurt more than I want to admit. My throat burns and I swallow. Quincy growls low in warning. “Lisa, being a bitch won’t grasp my brother’s attention. Stop being a spoiled brat and apologize to Evie now.”

“I’m not doing this for Gavin’s attention,” Lisa argued, rolling her eyes. “I’m just stating facts here. I’m on Jonah’s side about this stray.”

Quincy lifts a brow, her tone going from angry to mocking. “So you’re saying the way you’re acting now is not because my brother is intrigued by Evie?”

Before Lisa can respond, a heavy powerful presence fills the room.

“Enough.”

Gavin’s voice is calm however, it carries enough authority that it slices through the tension like a knife. The air shifts in the room, giving way to his power and everyone’s eyes snap to his.

He leans on the doorframe, his arms crossed over his chest as his eyes fixed on Lisa. His huge frame somehow makes the room feel smaller with him here. Lisa flushes brightly, her cheeks growing a bright cherry red.

She was so beautiful, it was a bummer she was so nasty spirited.

She gasped, turning to Gavin, the cold look on her face gone and now replaced by warmth and adoration. “Gavin I was just –

“Apologize,” Gavin says flatly, cutting her words off.

Lisa stiffens, shifting on her feet uneasily. She spares me a bitter glance before returning her gaze on Gavin. She begins to stammer. “I di-dn’t-

“I wasn’t asking,” Gavin cuts in, his gaze unwavering. If I were in her position his stare alone would make me tilt my head and show him my neck.

The color drains from Lisa’s face and the scent of humiliation blooms from her. And slowly but rudely she turns her eyes back to mine. “Sorry,” she mutters, the word clearly tasting bitter on her tongue. Though her voice was soft her eyes showed her annoyance.

“Sorry to whom?” Gavin arches a brow impatiently.

With a huff and a roll of her eyes, Lisa grumbles low. “I’m sorry for my words Evie.”
